The deal is for the model with 4330 graphics; which will affect battery life but improve performance.

HOT - OK Vista and not Windows 7 and the battery won't give the claimed 8 hours, but this is a pretty capable machine and gets pretty good reviews, like this at cnet.

(That review was for the 4500MHD graphics model and not this better equipped model)

“The deal is for the model with 4330 graphics; which will affect battery life but improve performance. - wombat6025”

The Timeline series generally use switchable graphics so I’m not sure that battery life will be affected much if at all if you just use the integrated graphics.

The Travelmate versions of the Timelines usually lack HDMI unfortunately.

Thanks for the info on switchable graphics. Yes you're right there is only a VGA out, USB and Acer EasyPort.

I had an Acer that I broke after 4 years (pulled the battery while it was powered on).
On my work Dell D610 - I've had 3 replacement hard drives (two were brand new) and two body-swaps.

Individual stories really mean nothing; however Acer does score as poorly as Lenovo and nearly as poorly as HP compared to Asus, Toshiba, Sony and Apple in failure rates over 1-3 years (according to some big American warranty re-seller). What that doesn't account for is how good the support you get is; and by all accounts it's pretty poor for Acer.

You can't really be generic like this, Acer have lots of ranges.
They do make some cheap, horrible laptops - which should definitely be avoided.

This model great with very good reviews. It rivals the HP DM3 models and the the ASUS UL30A.

It should be good for some light gaming (maybe bit of cod4, DIRT, Grid, ect)
Must admit its not the looker, but some angles it does look better, its quite thin and light too.
Vista is fine, and a windows 7 upgrade can be picked up cheap if you want. The free XP downgrade may help some people.
The only downsides are no HDMI (DVI can be gotten through the dock connector though), and poor speaker (only one, mono, speaker)

Great price, this should be hotter, i havent seen these specs cheaper anywhere! £450 at amazon!

despite the good reviews, the 13" Timeline was a disappointment when i played on it in the shop.
much too much keyboard flex (try applying a little pressure on a letter in the middle of a keyboard), and the screen seemed a bit flimsy too.
on the other hand it is good value, and not sure what alternative i could recommend at this price if you are looking for a 13" screen laptop

abstaining on this one

This is a seriously good laptop for the money. Its very light and powerful, and there really isnt much out there for this sort of price at the moment.

This is an absolutely brilliant machine, I purchased one and fitted it with crucial 64GB C300 SSD and then installed win 7. It is built very well, I have been using it for a few weeks now and the only negatives are (1) speakers are poor (2) viewing angles aren't great. If you need a 13.3" machine and can do without HDMI, look no further. It is slim, built very well, handles game well, has excellent battery life, is very well specced. I'd give it a solid 95%
