Bought one of these.

Horrific grinding noise and disgusting smell when it started up, having to return it.
Clearly faulty.

These are normally ~£230, so these must be a dodgy batch.

Did you have it replaced or refunded in the end ?

So...it's not a good deal then really, if as a member has said up there ^ you can't get cheap toner. Might as well get the superior dell one?

Yes, the cost of toners for this Ricoh item leaves it somewhat cold for anyone expecting to print more than a total of a few hundred sheets.
Yes again, consider the superior Dell 1320CN network printer, some suggestions below - just maximise whatever toner option best suits your requirements

Marginally better at the same price = http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/acer-5742-core-i5-laptop-with-4gb-memory-black-08702299-pdt.html?srcid=369&xtor=AL-11

Someone posted a Sony on here the other day with dedicated graphics for slightly more money.

Dont let this put you off posting though
This seems a very high price given the spec. I hope you didn't order one Op you can get much better value for money...
The title should be a brief description, along with the price and store. The description goes below.

Looks like you need an edit.:)
Reasonable price for an i5, but...

Intel HD = "amazing graphics" ??!

not a better graphics card its weaker than the 425 which is weaker than the 5650

True, but what Im wondering is this. Which machine would give the best gamming performance/experience?

Median P6642 i5-460M using GeForce GT425 M vs Acer Aspire 5942G i3 330QM using ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650

The ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 is only very slightly faster than the GeForce GT425 M, BUT how much difference would it make with regards to the processoring power of each machine?

Can a better gaming exsperice be had with the slightly less powerful GeForce GT425 M card in an i5 machibe vs the slightly more powerful ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 card in the weaker i3 machine? Does that make sense? :P

It's worth noting that the median lacks an LED backlit screen. This will lower the value slightly of the median at resale. I also imagine an acer might fetch a higher price on resale, than a brand like median but who knows.

That said, personally I'd rather have an i5 over a better screen.

Edited By: sotomonkey on Jan 23, 2011 15:29
This Acer is a good deal but personally while I don't have a problem with the brand I wouldn't pay this much for one. You'll notice the high-end manufacturers using more metal alloys at these price points but Acer is all plastic - they look nice but long-term durability is always a consideration.

For me as others also said, AMD Radeon HD5650 graphics are very decent and I'd take the graphics hardware here with an i3 over a faster CPU and weaker or integrated graphics.

Voted cold, ACER tech support is very poor.
Only 0.3mp webcam at this price is rubbish.
Fingerprint readers are notoriously flakey.
I have this, but im going to get rid as dont use it.

Wow how prices have risen...

Almost identically model was available for as little as £510 delivered, less than 6 months ago. Here.

Admittedly this more expensive one has a larger HDD & Windows 7 preinstalled, but for £150?
I'd have expected the wave of i3 & i5 laptops into the market to have forced the price of older Core2 models down, not up!

Your one had a bluray drive too. It looks like this one doesnt.

is it meant to be a free upgrade to win7 by 31st Jan 2010? not 2009?

LOL, I hadn't spotted that!

http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/

Has the right date.
sinkyboy2000;7683847
220 Watts, so probably not ideal. It will need to be low profile card (if that's the right term) too.

Thanks, 220 is way too low.

Cheers for the mini review - this is about the right price point for me will do some digging ..

Never used Vista but hear its not great so would go for the Windows 7 upgrade

With 4GB of RAM I wouldn't expect that much difference TBH, I've used both a fair bit now (Home Premium in in both cases) , the user interface is very similar. For the sake of compatibility with older peripherals and SW personally I'd rather have a 32bit version than 64, but even most domestic machines seem to be packaged with 64bit.

The M1210 has a T series processor. The (more expensive) P series is much better for an ultraportable, longer battery life and less heat generated (so can go in a smaller form factor).

I actually have an M1210 and has served me well for a while, but this is much better specified than mine for around the same price as I paid. Hot.

If you get the non-dedicated GPU version, it also generates minimal heat. The one I have has a T7600 2.33GHz (I think that's top of the line) CPU so it does everything I need. Battery currently pulls out near 6 hours (9 cell) despite being the dedicated GPU version. I have an integrated WWAN connection for 3G backup on the go (use the hotspot finder otherwise), screen is unparalleled for quality on this size and flip camera is actually useful. It also uses a more unique directional mic which is not seen on regular systems.

Build quality is stunning too. Speakers are actually of more than acceptable quality, you have 2 headphone out ports along with 1 mic in that can be converted to surround output along with dedicated media button set. Also, no other laptop in the 12.1" range has 4x USB 2.0 ports. I also find the light up battery level indicator invaluable and use it all the time.

On the whole, I would say the M1210 is far superior despite being 2-3 years older and the original price reflects that.
Computerman;6180863
i guess with Acers people want to know about the build qaulity, is it well made or does it feel cheap?

I think it is well made. I have it in a sleeve in my bag which does get knocked about a bit and it seems fine.

I still have the sticker on the lid at the top because the shiny lid looks like it scratches easy but other than that it's ok. Need to invest in a good skin really.
thelaughingduck;6180521
I've got an older Acer 2930 which had 3gb RAM and 250GB Hard Drive, bought from Comet for £450 in January.

As mentioned it does have bloatware but will take only an hour or so on initial set up to get right, but then you'd need about 30 minutes anyway to install security apps, office suites, etc.

Battery lasts for about 3 hours or so with a decent amount of usage which I think is brilliant but don't know if the newer processer changes this.

The best bit is definately the size, not too big that it's a chore to carry but not too small so you feel restricted for space on the screen or feel like a giant. In my opinion it's a very good, solid laptop good for everyday use.

What are you talking about? DABS is owned by BRITISH TELECOM !!!!! They used to be good when Jon Atherton owned them but he sold out for big money to BT.

Think again. Things change and DABS is now a "wolf in sheep's clothing".
Ooooer! We've attracted the attention of Acer Outlet so maybe I should be worried in case my next comments cause them to come round and knee-cap me! Gulp!

Actually not worried in the slightest because the service was and product is outstanding. I ordered late Thursday evening and the laptop arrived 8am this morning (Monday). That's two working days. Pristine, original, unbroken security tagged, Acer boxed, brand new stock. Laptop is exactly as specified except for one thing - it also has built-in bluetooth - bonus! Vista experience rating of 3.1. Right sided DVD drive (only item on right side), 3 USB ports (2 left side, 1 at rear), rear power supply port, left-sided ethernet, left-sided vga, left-sided pcmcia slot, front ear, mic, line-in, front bluetooth switch, front wi-fi switch, 7 multimedia quick keys left of keyboard, webcam. Overall build quality is good - matt finish to case, nice bright screen (glossy), keyboard has very little flex.

This is my first Acer and I am impressed. I will use Acer Outlet again for deffo.

Thanks all.... :-D

Anyone one know of any new Acer Warranty deals for laptops? Is 3 yr better than 2 yr?

If you can afford a 3 year pack i would go for one of them,Bearing in mind that includes you're first years cover ,So you will get two extra year's on top of you're original year's warranty.I will have a look about to see if there is any good deals around. To qualify for a aceradvantage pack you're laptop must be less than a year old & not be a refurb.Hope this helps.Do you need a pack for a laptop or a netbook,Sorry for the late reply, busy time at work at the mo.:)
