I know it is cheap - but just to make people aware that this has no Freeview. It will only be any use to record from external sources (which could be a Freeview box) after switchover to digital.

That's a serious disadvantage. Which is a Pity because Acoustic Solutions seem to be a good value brand. Lets just hope that they bring out a new version with two Freeview tuners. That might give Humax something to think about.

I have a 160gb one of these it crash out all the time, you have to pull the plug out and re-set it again .

So, just to confirm please, if I connect this to my tv (internal Freeview) I cannot watch one and record another channel ? Roger

Can your internal Freeview be sent to an external source? If it can then you are correct. If not then you can't record anything from it anyway.

You will need an external Freeview box to do what you want.

NO, as it don't have a freeview tuner in this, just plug a ex box in the back eg another freeview box, sky box, freesat box :)

I would buy this but I object to paying for delivery and I don't really fancy topping up my order to over £50 just so Ebuyer will provide a service which is pretty much standard across the board these days.

To some it might be an advantage it can record from external sources, as most freeview recorders can't.

You say that most freeview recorders can't record from external sources - but nowadays I would think most DVD recorders can as most will have freeview.

All PVRs can't record from external sources e.g. best examples Humax and Topfield.

All DVD recorders can record from external sources (AFAIK). e.g. best examples Panasonic and Sony

I was just pointing out that unlike a lot of DVD recorders this can ONLY be used to record from external sources once Freeview is switched off....oh - and play DVDs.

Very true... Thank God someone else thinks like this.

Just because it doesn't have built in digital does NOT make it a write-off. Perfectly adequate for someone with Sky (old style) and for £40 provides a good method of transfering VHS to DVD. Considering you'd spend a few bob on leads, adaptors, software and so on to do it on the PC. And wires everywhere.

All in all... Hot!

Notice the spec states mono sound, which seems to be a limitation in many of the cheaper recorders. Doesn't stop it being a good price, but anything important worth archiving is surely worth at least stereo?

I'd imagine that's just output... Far from sure though.

Can anyone add any light?!? ;-)

Thankyou for posting that as I didn't notice and I would definitely need at least Stereo sound.

Also, is every disc recorded in this thing automatically coded to R2, or does it record to R0 but playback R2 discs as well as the discs which are recorded on it?

Confused now... As you say the spec says mono but there are L & R audio sockets.

Cheap HDD recorders are pretty pants due to buggy software and no updates

It will have L+R audio outputs even if mono so you can connect it to a stereo amplifier. A mono signal will still need to be output via both speakers.

It may be that it can playback DVDs in stereo but records internally in mono! It would be strange to have a DVD machine that can’t even output a commercial DVD in stereo as I imagine the chips that they use are all stereo these days as the cost savings for mono would be negligible.

This looks similar to the absolute sh1te one I returned to Argos early this year. Wouldn't touch Acoustic Solutions again. Worked for 3months but picture quality wasn't pin sharp by any means. You get what you pay for!
