I have worked in IT Support for 10 years now and have found one constant throughout... No matter what organisation I have worked for I have found that Acronis is better than any other software such as Ghost.
The best thing to do with this is to buy it and an external self powered usb hard drive, although if you have a server network set up at home you could use that method too.
I find that creating new images, dependant upon partition sizes, can take as little at 20 minutes and then less than 10 minutes to restore when required.
Acronis also offers a incremental back ups which means you can back up after launching new software or after carrying out lots of data entry without having to create a new image from scratch.
Anyway the main points are it's fast, simple to use and has so many features it has to be a must buy if you take working with PCs seriously and don't want to lose your data.

I also use Ghost, but Ghost is not being updated anymore. Support for Vista from Ghost is not good.

I plan to look at Acronis True Image 10 as it is the one recommended by PC Pro magazine.

Excellent program. Great price. Voted hot.

Been using Acronis True Image since version 7. Version 10 really is the dog's danglies as far as backup and imaging software is concerned - great deal and voted hot

This IS the daddy. Just pop a second hard drive into your machine, run clone mode, remove second drive and store it safely and if anything goes wrong on your master, replace it with the clone. Works lovely. Only niggle I have with it is you can't clone 2 small drives to different partitions on a larger drive, it's all or nothing. Bit of a shame as it would save me having to store a stack of backup drives.
#7
got to agree with the rest its a great piece of software

Many thanks to zippy22 for finding this deal. Just what I needed !
Voted hot and rep left, thanks again.................... :)

I tried Ghost and this a while back when I started backing up eveything.

Hands down, this was better. No question.

A top peice of software.

Just used this again yesterday to backup and resize my drives, amazing programme and simple to use, restores in 10 minutes, never had any problems, the network capability is great, store images on 1 PC and restore from there to another with no fuss.

Great product at twice the price.

I've been using this since V6 and it just gets better with each release. Its got me out of a few sticky situations and I keep a backup of my kids PC's from day 1 as they seem to visit so many sites that give their PC's grief.

I do a restore and 30 minutes later they are bakc to their initial state and ready to roll again, none of this re-installing windows nonesense!

Great deal voted hot

Oh and the proper link is here:

EDIT:

actually it may be useful to know if this is OEM or a full retail product, I assume retail but you never know.
#13
I use Ghost at work which is sort of the industry standard, but had no end of problems running Ghost at home.

I've been using True Image for quite a long time now at home and it's far more user friendly then Ghost and a far better product for the home market IMHO.
#14
Well done on finding this zippy22. This is a fantastic piece of software and at this price everyone should get a copy.

Can version 10 backup to an EXT3 file system? I've got version 9, and when imaging my Windows drive it won't allow me to select to save the image on any of my hard drives with an EXT3 file system. It can read an EXT3 file system, but doesn't seem to be able to write to it.

Fllowing the link, in the spec it says

Supported File Systems:

FAT16/32, NTFS, Linux Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS, and Linux SWAP
wolfman, if you're running fedora, then it uses some extra extents in ext3 that most distro's don't, so very early versions of v9 home didn't like it, however it was fixed.

i wonder if there's an upgrade plan from this to corporate, as that's really great, it'll read/write anything like jfs/xfs, even reiser4 iirc.

the annoying thing is, as of yet it's only v10 home that will read vista's ntfs, v9 enterprise can't hack it.

and yes, ghost is rubbish compared to acronis, even the corporate version, which contains bits of powerquest driveimage that symantec bought.

edit: just noticed you're backing up windows to a linux partition, that might not work as acronis boots a different kernel when backing up windows to linux iirc.

I bought this and it was full of bugs. It also has an appauling interface. It crashed all over the place on my rock solid installation of XP. Restores worked on a 50/50 basis. If you get it, make sure you test your restores before you need them as I found out the software can not be trusted at all. If you're buring to disk you also need to pre-create a load of pre-formatted DVD's before hard - how crappy is that (actually that may have been version 9 - can't remember). I can't believe that people would trust software like this with thier data, do your self a favour and try out paragon's software instead, it's far more mature and it's rock solid compared to this crap.

Regardig the type of company you are dealing with; I tried to cancel my order as acronis offer a 30 day(I think) cooling off period but this turned out to be a nightmare. Eventually got them to accept I wanted to cancel and get a full refund. They then offered me a "free" piece of software as compensation for all the problems I'd had. I accepted and requested they confirm my refund would still go through in the same e-mail. The next thing I knew i was told I had swapped my order to this "free" software and my card would still be charged. Took a week of my life to get my money back for this appauling software.

You have been warned and deserve everything you get if buy this unstable, flakey random assembly of 0's and 1's. Seems like some people have been lucky and it works for them but it's cheap for a reason. Search the web and read up in the forums and go see paragon it you ever want to see your data again.

Have a nice day.

for someone who hated the software so much and didnt continue after the trial why on earth did you accept a "free" piece of software from them?

everything i have read about this software wherever i have looked has been positive, yours is the 1st negative.

Q) this software works with XP home right? Play stats say XP Pro.

thank you.
#21
Thanks. I've ordered one despite tgbyhn10's comments ... let's hope it works!
#22
@tgbyhn10

I guess different people have a different experience with software but to reinforce what I wrote earlier, I have used this for many years with around 15 PC's (latptops and desktops), saving/restoring on USB devices and across networks and its never let me down once

Why wouldn't I accept free software. I could always uninstall it if it turned out to be as bad as true image - nothing to lose.

I wasn't on a trial, I had paid for the software direct from paragon but they offer a 30 day no quibble, LOL, money back guarantee.

Some of the backups I did would not restore even though they passed an integrity check. The outlook backup did not work and the software kept crashing in various places with no explaination of why. The logs the system produced were useless. The support was a joke. The whole thing was third rate.

I must sound like one of those angry people posting in forums but I'm not angry now; I was at the time though LOL. I wouldn't use true image for free as I could never be sure it would restore my system when I needed it. I have seen other people complaining about it but very few complain about paragon, they are like another step up in quality; more a grown up's / business's piece of software rather than a home package. Just my opinion, take it or leave it. I'm sure there are loads of people that love true image but I'm not one of them and it's because of actual experience of the software, not a review or some post on a forum, like this one, saying how good or bad it is.

Regards

Pete

Fantastic software, never let me down yet.;-)
#25
i don't know why you'd backup direct to dvd tgbyhn10, that's asking for trouble. backup to another drive, usb disk, lan etc; and burn to dvd later if you must.

i've never used the windows software, i've always just made a boot-cd, and ran from there.

i do remember ages ago - something like acronis v7 that the integrity check actually caused errors in the backup, although that was fixed ages ago, plus they release free updates very often.

why are we even arguing here for 15ukp?!

If you have a seagate or maxtor HDD then you can use this free Acronis download to back up your drive....I clone my HDD onto an external drive and this software works a treat.

Back in stock :)

I ordered a copy of Acronis TI10 last week and today received "You Got Served, Take it to the Streets" dance video.

I've instigated the returns process online (the phone number is "not working at present" according to the nice BT voice) but I've not dealt with them before so god knows how long it'll take.

I loved true image 10 when I got it, so easy to use.

The problem was, when I had a problem and decided to restore, 95% through the restore, and it just set there for about 24 hours. It had verified fine when making the backup, but decided to do a verify on the file before trying to restore again. It said it was corrupt.

No worries I though, I always keep a couple of drive images of one of my machines that quite tricky to set up.

That one had exactly the same problem.

I've since moved to paragon drive image (but I've never had to try a restore yet from that :p )

is this software as simpe as...

1. get the PC into the state you want it with OS, progs and drivers etc.
2. install Acronis.
3. a simple command interface walks you through the next stage?
4. backup the main hard drive to backup hard drive (external)
5. does backing up at this "clean install" stage effectively do the same as a new windows install?

if i never update the backup and sometime later reinstall the backup will my PC be back to its identical state inc. setting adjustments, registry settings and windows updates etc?

i assume as i go along if i make an adjustment to my setup i want to keep, i can update the backup?

thanks in advance.

Yes to all.

Thanks for this, it'll keep me and the OH happy.

Trust me, this is one of the best £15 you will ever spend on software. I can't tell you how many hours of pain and tedium that this program has saved me! I've used it since version 7 and it is streets ahead of Ghost (always has been).

If you don't have it - buy it.
