Advance notice is doomed to fail. Once the salmon realise they'll be half price, they'll swim away. Better to not tell them.

What gets me is, a year back a programme exposed TESCO, and the likes off, of its poor hygiene standards at their fish and meat counters, Im sorry but I havnt forgotten, no way on earth will I buy a so called fresh product from any of these counters.

Half price.
What is this in £££'s
#7
does anybody knows how much would cost?or at least how much cost now and i do the math

Tescos are following Morrissons they have fresh whole side of salmon at 1/2 price £5.60 for the last week and very nice it was

A lot of tesco's now have improved dramatically, The amount of discreet inspections that they get are un-real, they get management looking at them constantly after what happened, this is at every store and most of them are clean before all that news kicked off.

Well the Tescos at New Maldern has a very nice chap that always uses an inside-out bag to pick up the fresh fish making sure not to handle it.

We went in last week and there was a young fellow there instead, brushing the ice off the fish with his bare hands and also not using gloves or anything. Call me old fashioned but I don't care how clean a stranger's hands are he shouldn't be touching my fish!
#12
Madam, I wouldn't dream of touching your fish.

Not much food you can eat then eh? If you eat at a restaurant the food has all been handled (BAREHANDED! OMG), plus, how does everything get cut up, prepared, portioned and packaged? Are you taking a 'what I can't see can't hurt me' view? Gloves reduce dexterity, and you can still smear hideous disease on plastic.

Imagine you eating that salmon raw too!?
I mean, you would never think of cooking it and killing any bacteria that the fishmonger MAY have had on their hands as they handled it.
That's it! Get the food police out now!

Tesco had the same deal about 4-5 weeks ago and I bought 2 whole salmons. Thanks to OP for the advanced notice. I'll stock up some more this time.

Use of disposable gloves etc can be worse than bare hands, it can lead to poorer hygene standards.

It is just as easy to cross contaminate food wearing disposable gloves by not changing them when you should as it is to do so by not washing your hands when you should, in fact many believe the wearing of gloves can tend to make the person handling the food more complacent when it comes to hygene standards

She may have owned her own shop but I would blame Tesco for lack of training regarding hygiene.

Anyway, this deal smells a bit fishy to me :p

Is it farmed?

I think the important fact is that she USED to own a deli, not fit for that, not surprised she didnt meet Tesco's hygiene standards however low, if she was any good, she would still own a deli. Any newsagents with chopped pork in a chiller is now called a deli. All supermarket counters are selective.

Hey, I dont really know much at all about salmon, could someone tell me how much roughly a whole salmon would weigh?

Or how much it would cost at half price?
#32
About a tenner a fish, got it filleted and i chopped it into 16 individual steaks. Tesco guy used a blunt axe to fillet it though :(

Sweet.

Have you ever thought that might be the reason why she USED to own her own shop.... i.e: no longer does. Anyway what a silly example to give...she could have decided it wasn't for her and left to work elsewhere or open another dehli... it doesn't justify the fish counters being hygienic!

Indeed I have.
Didn't think you ate the skin of the salmon in sushi, it tends to be the flesh.
There is more chance of the ice having coliforms on it.
Ice making machines are notoriously poor, hygienically.

Anyone who knows anything about food hygiene will tell you that a bare hand is best. People wash their hands, they wouldn't wash gloves.

This fish would not be suitable for sushi.
