It is not a particularly appealing price for the spec and the fact it is a refurb.combined.

I've had major problems with the refurbished Advent 4211 - they were advertised back in October 15th as being at £229.99p in price and I stupidly ordered one, thinking it was a good deal but basically the first laptop started dying after two days (the motherboard was shot, which caused it to freeze up quite a lot & the battery wouldn't charge at this point).

The replacement laptop arrived at my house DOA - at that point I asked for a full refund and I haven't touched anything from Dixons since, as it did take a while to get the refund sorted out.

To be honest, they had major problems with the BIOS when they launched, this resulted in alot of them being returned to store.

They will have the latest drivers and BIOS on and should be fine. Personally I prefer my 4211 over the Dell Mini 9 I just bought - but thats no biggie cos my missus has stolen the mini 9 now...

Hi Speedski. What do you prefer about the Advent? My guess is the battery life and build quality are better on the Dell, but this Advent is £100 cheaper so I would be interested to hear your comments as you have (had) them both. Thanks

From the times I had them they felt okay to work with but that was before the first one died on me and the second one was DOA! :whistling:

Speedski was right though, the working one I did have for those two days did have the updated BIOS present on it...not sure if that helps at all.

I'm torn.

I got the Dell for £99.00. I have the Asus eee pc 900 and I had this 4211 when it first came out for £280.00.

To be honest, the Advent with XP and the full keyboard and larger HDD was by far the easiest to use but was bigger and felt heavier than the other 2. Also, the battery life was shockingly poor.

Has the 6-cell batery been released yet as I only used to get 1.5 hours out of the Advent.

I get 2.5 hours out of the Asus and 3.5 out of the Dell.

Not sure mate but as its a clone of the MSI Wind I would assume there is something out there for it - you tried Google UK at all to see if anything is showing for it?

Indeed battery on the Advent is not its strong point, but having used an ASUS, Dell Mini and Acer I prefer the Advent, the keyboard is easier to type on (the Dell is horrible if you have big hands - if I put my hands side by side they are only 1in narrower than the Dell Mini as a whole) - the storage space, speed and XP make it worht it in my opinion. With the right drivers/BIOS its a soldi machine that just does what you need and makes an excellent postable media file player too - if you have a car cigarette transformer it makes car journeys really good as its nice and light to sit on your lap.

6 cell and 9 cell batteries are available. I got a third-party 6 cell for £40 delivered and I get 4 hours out of it on Mac OSX. I could get up to another hour on XP if I ran it as it has better power optimisation coding.

FWIW, I have tried probably all the netbooks, including Toshiba's latest effort and in my opinion, the Wind has the nicest keyboard. The Samsung's is slightly larger but does not have as good an action and the irregular keycap shape takes a bit of getting used to.

Am tempted to pick one up for someone, for whom battery life is irrelevant, but the tales of woe are putting me off these refurbs. I'm sure the price will drop to around the £175 level around the January sales period, particularly as this is an old model.

...I have the Asus eee pc 900...

I sent mine back for repair due to the discharge phenomenon, not sure what will happen but if they can't repair it I stand a fair chance of getting a refund :).

Might be a while before they get back to me though apparently the company who repair returns on behalf of Asus in the UK aren't too great.

Had the Advent since available and find it really great, have just upgraded BIOS to MSI109 and am over clocking by 24% on mains! The only problem with v109 is re activatting XP because it thinks its a different PC. Manage to get about 2.5 hours on battery by under clocking and using wifi.

Linky here Price has gone up £3 due to exchange differences (US sourced) since I ordered. You might save a quid or two ordering from ebay. Just avoid any 5200mAh battery on ebay, since you will receive a 4400mAh battery and probably pay more.

Just tested the voucher and it is giving a massive 20p off the price.

Did you get the Cameron Sino battery pictured?

I got a white CS for my Wind U100. The battery was a slight beige/wheat colour which did not quite match the pearlescent surface of the notebook, but since it sits underneath, who cares? I hear the black is a better match all round. If you are really **** about this, I would hold out for the Medion battery. I originally ordered from them but got fed up of waiting. Perhaps I should have held out as when they eventually delivered, people got the last 5200mAh batteries produced.
