lame review, id rather spend £100 extra and get one with a better review.

Especially as most people consider laptops as a long term purchase one they intend to use possibly daily and for years

But if £200 is all you've got and with 12 month warranty, pretty good. I'd always be worried about the battery as they are so pricey, bt worth a punt I guess, you can always send it back if it's not as described I suppose.
#3
This is £40 cheaper than next cheapest based on the bits it is built on so I think it is a good deal regardless of whether you would buy one £100 more and is better value than the netbooks around this price which don't have larger screen or DVD drives
#4
well if you only have around £200 to spend its a good buy so hot from me
#5
Perfect for people who want a decent size screen, not those annoying 9" jobs with the tiny drives and no optical. Now those are a waste, what do you actually do with those overpriced things.

And at a good price, wont do for me but for someone just checking emails, word processing and surfing its perfect.

Secondhand One just sold for £283 inc on Ebay for those who want to make a possible quick profit
#7
May not be the best laptop in the world, but for £200 thats a good deal.

Not after my experience with Advent.

Can you use CD's with the DVD drive on this machine? I need to know as it's for a friend who needs something cheap and basic but must be able to use CD's.

Well, I've plumped for one for my nephew who's only eight and to be used at home so should be OK I would hope. I'll let you know how it is next week. I notice it's Vista which I have no experience of, I think I would rather have tried and trusted XP. Now all I need is some free security software for kids browsing etc. any recommendations, I'll probably go for AVAST anti Virus and Spybot but don't know much about this net nanny type software, and as I'm setting it up for him I want to do a proper job.

Add recon2 and feb2 to reduce it to £192.07 and go through topcashback for 3% cashback. quidco don't offer dixons cashback anymore as far as my merchant search on quidco goes. Nice find andy_sym Well done. Voted HO(T HOT HOT considering the overall package of 12 months warranty, cheap laptop and good spec.

Avast and Spybot alongside making sure Vista firewall and Windows auto updates are on should do the trick! Oh I would also give the litle man a limited user account so he needs to get someone who (hopefully) knows what they are doing to install anything he needs

Never used net nanny type software though so no help there I'm afraid but IMHO kids shouldn't be allowed to surf on internet in too much peace and quiet otherwise it is asking for trouble!

There is a 17 inch laptop with faster CPU and 2GB RAM for 300 on same website. Looks like a better deal to me.
#17
Bagged myself one of these, looks a good deal for a budget laptop with 12 months warranty. Thank you op!!!!!

I dare say they have a stack of laptops of higher spec but they are all far more expensive..

For people on a budget I doubt you can beat this deal, thanks again!!!!

Cheers for that andy. I've never understood the paranoia about the web until now, when I think of some of the stuff a little kid could be confronted with by just searching for something which would just seem a little bit naughty to them, I'll make sure he's supervised, but boys will be boys and no doubt he'll get up to all sorts especially when he's with his friends.

Perfect Bargain, especially when you can upgrade the laptop memory extremely easily and cheaply for that matter.

I've brought one and plan to replace Vista with Ubuntu, being my favorite OS I think on this machine it would fly.
#21
Thaks for heads up just ordered one and also extra ram and battery to make a nice little machine:thumbsup:
#22
I can understand why this can seem appealing. Being a refurbish product from DSGi I would poke it with a stick. Advent is a budget brand. Make savings everywhere they can (generally speaking) i.e. this model only has one SODIMM socket, which is occupied. So if any of you are looking for RAM upgrade order a single 2GB module only.

On top of what andy_sim recommended to keep out nasties, if you are looking for some parental control software then I can recommend K9 Web Protection:

http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

You can tailor what web sites and what Google searches your son can do, and can even limit the times when the internet connection is available. Definitely worth a look and a try on the default settings.

This price compared to new price seems good BUT , of course, it isn't new.
Someone else bought it, didn't like it and now it is offered at a lower price.

Heat added £192 squid delivered with 12mth guarantee cant complain at that with built in webby.
#26
Absolutely ***** laptops, but seems very cheap, perhaps good for a younger family member
#27
Let's put this all into perspective

If you want a laptop for anything other than web, email light office apps and stoing music / photos then yes this is not the laptop for you.

If you want any level of gaming really or video editin then you will need a higher spec laptop

but my 77 year old Dad has a similar spec Packard Bell nad it is just fine for email / buying books from Amazon / checking onlime bus and train times / storing his photos and managing music....and his was a recon from DSG two and a half years ago and has never missed a beat

so for what it is it's well worth it

heat given

I got this laptop in june on same deal, came the next day and is excellent for the price!

the only problem is the battery only last about 45 mins but as im always near a plug this hasnt bothered me! i use it alot for uni and found it excellent for what i need it for, plenty of memory and is fast to shut down and start up! brilliant if you want a cheap laptop for writing assignments and surfing the net and itunes and stuff! reallt light too.
i had a very expensive toshiba before this one and swore i would stick wth toshiba, however, the only diff i have noticed is the battery!
#29
Excellent, excellent deal - voted hot. Absoulete bargain for the price, I'll be reccomending these.

To the people who say its **** because its Vista or because its made by advent - you haven't got a bloody clue. Vista is better than XP, and just because Advent may have had some patchy laptops in past dosent mean the whole lot is bad.
#30
Value for money is the key today and price is fantastic .,but u still get moaners lol

Don't forget to use the code MARCH2 to get 2% off! :)

The fact I routinely repair advent machines, see the refurbs first hand might give some insight. You're right not all Advent machines are bad. But this one is.

Last year, DSG was selling similar laptops (Advents) but those were better spec (Pentium Dual Core + 2GB ram, not Celeron + 1GB) for the same money....I just do not get how the offer can be good...yeah, a year ago... but not now ?

I had a few Advents in my hands - not all were rubbish but certainly most...hot, noisy, made with cheap plastic, having poorly made hinges, often with sis chipset, poor battery life..... and do not count on TechGuys (DSG service) in case of problems - you will not get it

Use AVG free and spybot or adaware.
