matter of opinion, after an early problem which was fixed quickly ive been well pleased with mine, saved me £100 and still had 1 years warranty. hot from me.

Harsh, but your opinion.

My 'refurb' 4211c - was fantastic.

Apart from the initial packaging there was nothing to suggest it was anything but brand new.
Ordered a 5421 recently, very pleased with it, came looking brand new, only thing battery life is a bit naff but can't complain for 200 squid.

Thats a stupid comment to make, its discounted for the fact that its refurbed, it could simply have been reported faulty due to user error OR incorrect software instal, as they chuck in a years warranty the risk is low
Hmm wondering whether I should get this instead of a netbook now.

This weighs nearly 3 kg - netbooks typically 1.1kg. If you are wanting to lug it around everywhere a netbook might be a better long as you don't mind no optical drive or a slower processor.
its only me

What is the discount code please?
i have just ordered 1 of these, you can quite easily upgrade the memory to 2gb, this would be suggested as this comes with vista premium which might be a wee bit slow with just 1gb it has a 1 card slot and is easy to install, so the max you can get is 2mb which should improve the performance alot, £20 fotr the memory delivered, the laptop aint the greatest in the world but for £230 and specs will be brilliant for my kids... i was considering the 4211 10 inch more portable but no dvd/cd drive, i would rather have the drive than the bluetooth, and the bigger screen for £30 more, also battery life isnt the greatest but not an issue for me, around 2 hours based on different reviews

I've had a Advent laptop before... never again!. Battry life is so poor. You get about 0ne hour 15mins to start with which quickly goes down to 2 mins if you are lucky, i had to always have my plugged in because of that.

Another stupid and ignorant comment. I'm not a particular fan of Advent (and I have repaired a number of different Advent models) as they are definitely at the budget end of the market but saying that, they're good value.
If everyone labelled a manufacturer for a single bad experience, there wouldn't be a laptop on the market that was deemed acceptable. All manufacturers have a duff model or two - that's life when you're striving to produce new models in a fast changing technology market.
Also, what you're describing comes down to 2 symptoms - a duff battery (one of the internal cells has failed) or it needs conditioning.
read a million horror stories about dell, hp, compaq, acer etc, fact is some will have faults, the same as anything in life, dosent mean there ****, **** happens and thats what a warranty is there for, im not bothered in the slightest about a refurb as ive had loads of gear refurbed without any problems,
I bought a refurb Gateway (owned by Acer I believe) 11 months ago. It's been great and this is the first time I've seen a (slightly) better spec laptop for (sightly) less than I paid - usually when you buy any PC you see a better spec for less money within days of purchase!

Unless you're loking for a games machine this looks like and excellent buy.
Appears to be a good deal

However just to balance all the good reliability posts. I bought an Advent from PCW last May . Nice laptop except it is always back at Tech Guys being repaired. It knows it's own way back there now (6 times reruned) They have renewed the LCD screen, the CPU twice, the motherboard twice plus several other bits. It must have cost PCW and Tech guys a lot more that the laptop is worth as it was collected and returned by a courier each time. The courier says I am his best customer. However the guarantee is over soon and if it packs up again I will have to scrap it. I contacted PCW to request a replacement laptop due to the many failures and informed then that the laptop had almost been back at their workshops more that it has been in my possession. They would not replace it unless it had been returned for the same problem 6 times. As it was different problems they did not want to know.

I have it back with me at present. Keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps going for a change. So unlike some other posts my experience of buying a refurbished laptop is not a good one.
My 'topcashback' tracked for an extra £7.06 too
got mine and its mint, looks brand new , very nice laptop for the price, runs great aswell, but i have upgraded memory to 2 gb, vista is fine and im getting about 2 hours on full settings on the battery,i am more than happy with this and will be recommending this  glad i didnt listen to the people who slated dixons and advent result
just ordered one. 3 to 4 days for delivery.
seems a decent laptop for the money and i need a replacement.

came y'day. big packaging...btw.
in near excellent condition and working great. battery was nearly fully charged.
paperwork scant (no details on warranty) etc..but very happy with it overall especially at that this price!
Laptop arrived yesterday, couldn't spot any sign of use, the laptop looks and feels brand new.It is for my daughter who dropped her last advent laptop and it packed in, this model has everything she needs and more for the price paid .
Got mine today also great condition but has a dead pixel so its going back.
