Guys I found this:

The lowest priced quad core laptop:

* Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9000
* (2.0GHz, 1066MHz, 6 MB Cache)
* Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium
* 4 GB Memory
* 250 GB Hard Drive
* Blu-Ray Disc Drive
* ATI Radeon HD4850 Graphics Card
* 512MB dedicated graphics memory
* 17" Widescreen display
* Stylish design with gaming keyboard

Its got top of the range compounds, and an amazing quad core CPU, ideal for HD video encoding. Not to mention this laptop has all the essential stuff like web cam, 3 USB slots, etc; and bluray, all for less than a 999 quid.

Not to mention mobility 4850 is a BEAST at gaming, one of the fastest mobility chip around. It has the same raw power from its massive 800 stream processor as the desktop 4850, just underclocked. For more info of the GPU, please look here:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4850.13975.0.html

(I think this might be based on MSI's GT725, in which case, there might be an overclock button. overclocking the Quad CPU by 20%, up to 2.4Ghz, I'm not sure though)

Now in most shops owned by DSG, for example PC world, Dixons, comet, etc for £999.

However, you can go through to Dixons via topcashback, and add the laptop to your basket and enter both codes (feb2, lap2) which brings the price down to £960.39, cashback will track as 3% of that amount bringing it down further to something like £931.58

Special thanks to member abomination, who has kindly informed me about the discount.

Consider that normally half decent quad core laptop with GPU of this sort of caliber costs nearly 2k , this is the deal, if you need multicore.

In fact, with same CPU, and inferior GPU, and NO BLU RAY, Half the RAM, Rock still charge you £1699

Here is the link for that Rock laptop

deffinatley... the ones i linked a thread to also dont have a blueray drive.....

Cheers, I've updated it. I really hope they have this in my local store; going there directly after work...

Buy it from Dixons instead £960.39 with vouchers (feb2, lap2).

The spec is great ,the price can be too...it depends actually who makes the laptops for them.
Nornally.,Advent's laptops are garbage - I wouldn't spend even £200 on such 'quality' ,but I have not seen this particular model.

Comparison with Rock is at least inappropriate :
1. Rock offers 3 yearts warranty , good service and high quality...Advent + DSG(Techguys) ...hmmmmm:thinking:
2.Rock laptops are being made in the UK - being foreigner myself, should I remind you this fact ????Is not that important in current economic climate ???Wake up

I've heard of quality concerns, its not to be taken lightly, I'll probably go in a store, try in person. Though I think this barebone system is made by MSI, Advent merely assembles it.

1. You can get 3 year warranty from DSG group as well, their support from my experience has not been that bad; I'm also a member in the rock forum for a long time now, I know if you post on their forum, they will respond very kindly, but telephone services and speed aren't that great from them. To be honest I'd much rather get it in a shop, its more reliable personally.

2. Just because they are made in the UK, so what? I’m sorry, but being a British company is not an excuse If they cannot be price competitive; and they have always been an expensive distributor. If they actually designed and made the hardware, then I have no problem, but they are merely rebranding Clevo hardware; being the middleman and if they can't offer us the consumers better deal, why get ripped off knowingly? take Novatech, another UK company I’ve used, they offer much better value for money on same Clevo hardware, if they can offer better value for money, I've got to ask, why can't 't Rock...

could you check the screen resolution, HDD speed, overclock feature and build quality.

A grand on an Advent? Don't care what the specs are just couldn't bring myself to do that.
#13
I will check, but the notebook was announced on the 15/6th; even if it got to my local store, I won't be able to check until Saturday, cos my store closes before I finish work...
#14
Just to let people know who rush to follow the trends, there is the capability to make core32 processors. They are just bringing them out slowly.

Could not agree more. Advent as a brand have a very bad reputation and this is completely justified.

Ask yourself why Dixons and PC World sell so many refurbs of Advent products compared to far fewer refurbs from decent brands(Compaq, Tosh. etc).

You can have all the spec. in the world but it is only any good if the thing works!

It would need a team of wild horses to get me to buy anything with the Advent name on it, but I suppose they would come in handy afterwards, for carrying it around, as it is going to be an unwieldy thing!

I wonder if the battery life will be long enough for it to actually finish booting? :whistling:

If you need a desktop, buy a desktop for a lot less money, these 17" things are oversized, and barely save any space anyway - by the time you end up hanging other USB gear off it, they start looking just as untidy anyway.

I tried it before, and it was a BIG mistake :-(

I've decided to bring money on saturday for one. Hopefully it will be a good quality system with 1920x1200 screen; if so its an awesome system, though I would be so crossed if they release one with Q9100 the day I get it. Anyway, please wish me luck, from what I hear, I'll need it.

This is a very good spec fo the price!! Not only is a quad core quite rare in a notebook but also the fact that it has a Mobility HD4850 and a Blu-Ray drive for under £1000

The fastest Nvidia mobile graphics card is the GeForce 9800M GTX which has 112 stream processors. This is the same number as the desktop 8800GT and 9800GT. The desktop HD4850 is far faster than a 8800GT or 9800GT and trades blows with the 128 stream processor 9800GTX+ !! Since the Mobility HD4850 is only a downclocked desktop HD4850 it is going to be faster than any current single Nvidia mobile graphics card!!

BTW not all Advent notebooks are bad - it depends on the OEM they use. A few are rebranded MSI notebooks.

Would really like a few more comments on this as i have been looking for a gaming laptop at a reasonable price now for quite a while. The only thing that puts me off is the comments on it being advent. The spec looks really good though.

This is why God invented white matter, the part of the brain that facilitates deception. This is a cracking deal for a very powerful laptop. Buy it, and edit the invoice in Photoshop before printing it off for your records.

Its a MSI barebone rebranded, basically everything is made by MSI, Advent only have to assemble them.

If anyone happen to go to PC world/currys/dixons, and see this, please let me know the screen resolution

Aye. It's the way the market is heading, and multithreading is something Microsoft has been pushing strongly on developers for a good few years. But the drawback in adding more and more cores is that it gets harder and harder to keep them running at a high clock speed, and it gets more expensive, too. Take your Tile64 chip for example, which you can read up on at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TILE64 . 64 cores, but they only run at 900MHz, and although the chip can double the performance of the fastest Intel Xeon processor, that's something not all that impressive considering that it has 16 times as many cores.

It's all just a matter of trading off one for another. Right now, MHz and the complexity of each core still means more than cores, because the work isn't being evenly distributed across all of a processor's cores. When distribution gets better more cores will help, but right now, if you were to swap a 3GHz dualcore chip with the Tile64 600MHz 64-core chip, you'd see performance sink like a rock.

So in fairness on Intel, these periodic core doublings are probably just the state of their progress and they're being released as the market has use for them. They're not holding the 32core chips back just to screw us. Or, I don't think so, anyway.
#25
Well, 6/8 mobility core wont come up for another year or two, 4 is pretty good.
#26
Is there an Advent website to find out more about this laptop? Would like to know how upgradable it is hdd wise and also the battery life. Also how easy it would be to get drivers if i were to want to put XP on it.
#27
well, just search for msi on google, use gt725's drivers would do the trick.
#28
Shame about the screen resolution, after seeing the gt725 I have to say it's fairly ugly but the hardware is impressive.

I might have a play with one of these if my local ever gets them in.
#29
Looks like the hdd is 5400.

Anyone have any idea what speed the wireless is b/g or n?
#30
All of them I think, its an intel 5100.
#31

Where does it say that it's an intel 5100? :?
#32
Also still wanting to know if things can be upgraded, like hdd, mem etc. Or do you have to send it to the one of the service centres to get this done? Can't seem to find any info on this.
#33
Swapping in a HDD is easy, like you mentioned, I've no idea if it breaks their warranty, I don't think RAM can be upgraded easily though, best ask them in the shop, I'm not their customer support representive so I dont know their policies. while it works with up to 8GB (4gbx2 like MSI 1722), only 6.8GB will be possibly utilised; not much point upgrading the ram really...
#34
Indeed it has 5100 wifi.
#36
Im currently sat typing on this laptop, its a rebranded MSI one, insanely fast. Runs crysis easily on max settings with AA and AF on.

Fast enough to compile nice and easily in visual studio 2008, not too heavy. Screen is lovely and bright.

This laptop is excellent!
#37
This laptop is now apparently discontinued. Those who got it had a bargain...
