Have some heat and a sprinkle of rep.

Rock and Roll!

Good Price voted hot!

Good for the money. I picked up a 9617 last bank holiday for £250 and I am well impressed. The fact that its a refurb doesn't impact on it. In fact probably have better checks done on them when leaving the factory. :-)
#9
Nice deal! 3% Quidco too for an extra fiver or so?

Placed my order!

12 months ..but it is a Dixon tech-guys one

Not sure what that is .. does it include hardware problems ?
Can't see anything on the Dixons site regarding warranty for refurbished items.
Cheers

#18
On the verge of buying this but need to know about the warranty.
#19
I have just ordered one anyway. But if you do a search on the main dixons site it does not come up on the list of Advent laptops?

#23
last time I got it was brand new - did not seem to be refurbished, even smelled as new one. However mikne had one bd pixel. Heat added. Thanks

The cpu is not bad , 2gb is absolutely enough to run vista smootly.Graphic chip is integrated and bases on mirage3+ - run Vista Aero but with some difficulties , also I would rather forget playing games on it - does not perform well.

Faulty Goods
The following are guidelines. Wherever possible we will respond to your individual circumstances.

If there is a fault with your product within 12 months of delivery (or other defect with your order), we will normally offer a prompt repair, exchange or refund. You will always have the option of an exchange or refund if the fault occurs within 28 days of delivery. In all cases we reserve the right to inspect the product and verify the fault.

To qualify for a refund or exchange the product must be:

in otherwise "as new" condition; and
complete with any accessories and free gifts offered with it and, if possible, the original box and packaging.
Please phone Aftersales on 0844 561 1111 (9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, Sunday closed ). If a fault occurs while you are abroad, please contact us after you return to the UK.

This promise does not cover faults caused by accident, neglect, misuse or normal wear and tear. For consumable items (e.g. non-rechargeable batteries, camera films, ink cartridges etc) the guarantee period is three months from delivery.

If a pre-recorded videotape, DVD, CD, minidisc or other software is faulty under guarantee we will happily exchange it for the same title or offer a refund.

Any refund due to a fault or other defect will include a refund of the applicable delivery charge. We will also pay for our costs of collecting goods for replacement or refund. Replacement goods are sent by standard delivery only (i.e. premium services are not available).

Hot Hot! Good deal/price for the config!!

Has anyone had good experience with refurbished Advent? Mine was pretty bad and I have yet to find somebody who's happy with a recon from Curry's/Dixons.
#29
It's showing as out of stock here now...

Now showing as out of stock :(

sold out :(

I would never buy an advent laptop unless it had 2 gig of ram with an intel dual core cpu and will cost me about £190 after quidco :)

seriously, they are not that great at all...pc world sell them!

yes i've just bought one..but i fix computers for a living so unless it has a motherboard issue i'm happy.

(..happy once XP is installed, after ghosting a backup of the the current install, should improve battery life!).

(Current laptop Fujitsu Siemens Amillo 6500 P3 1Ghz built in the dark ages, still going strong! ( now with a 7200rpm disk) ;)
..hows that for build quality!
#33
Don't get me wrong this is a fantastic price, almost throw away compared to the price of a top end laptop.

The spec is not bad either... again very good value.

But it's advent.

I've used many manufactuers and when it comes to laptops you must seriously consider the build quality of the laptop, not just price and components.

I do not rate advent... some people will disagree but you will see generally there are more people complaining about the poor build than people giving thumbs up.

I am not going to write the deal cold... it's a good price but i question how long this laptop will last.

it's a reasonable point, and I agree with you broadly speaking, but it might be a little subjective. It might surprise you to know that Advent, along with HP, Dell, Sony and even Apple, are not laptop manufacturers. They are OEM assemblers. Even then, an in some cases, you can buy what you think is a Tier 1 laptop and it has never touched the hands of a member of staff from the company whose badge is on it. All the way from sub assembly to delivery to the end user.

The real people who make these are the ODM suppliers like Quanta and Compal. The majority of tier 2 units, of which Advent is one, are from guys like clevo and Uniwill. Google these companies and you'll see the Tier 2 products as they are sold from the ODMs.

Advent, a brand name of DSG, will never spend the money on R&D like an HP, but invariably it's the fact they customise the BIOS and enforce people to deal with PC World and Tech Guys where the issue is.
#36
I bet though that the advent laptops do not come from the same place as HP, Dell or Sony ones :)

You can tell just by the build.

Thanks for the info. It's good to know where stuff is coming from.

The Tier 1 guys are indeed fiercly protective of the money they pump into R&D, or in some cases just the D, so it's not always easy to tell however it would surprise you.....Acer get a massive share of the global notebook market because they do ODM manufacture for the likes of Sony etc.

Warranty is a warranty if it is on the same terms and service level - personally it's a warranty held with DSG which puts me off. I really don't want to be told to restore the machine every time it sniffs.

Like I say though, Advent's are likely Uniwill, Clevo and the like.

and it breaks after 1 year.... I've seen two break in month 13.. you are screwed. And they will charge you the cost of what you paid for the laptop just to look at it.

Many of you have bought this - many of you will be OK after a year, 2 years etc. Someone will in this thread will have a problem. Type advent in search and read peoples feedback (not mine).
#39
stephenc - what do you think of acer laptops.

Bad pixel I hope you requested an exchange.

No, I did not.I would probably not get it back being just refunded and I was not interested in it.
Free software came to the rescue (really it was stucked pixel - yellow all the time) ;)
