Great deal Mike... But at PCworld, stocks never last that long... Where are the good ol' Dell deals... I've noticed that it also comes with a separate graphic card which is quite a feat at this price..
#2

Dell chose to keep every deal same as was last week so the extra £60 off small business ones are the best this week too for now.

Anybody any idea how noisy these are? Would consider using one as a media center PC if it's quiet enough.

Cheers,
Dan.

They don't have any left, it looks like they do but they don't. I was told on the phone.

My gf got hers at the previous price of £215 but didn't power up on delivery. Was going to see if it was quicker to buy another one than wait for this one to be 'replaced'.

That's not to say they won't get anymore in, my advise is to keep the page bookmarked. This is the second lot they had in.
#7
wow that really is cheap, i've just built me up a pc which cost me about the same price, if only i had seen this sooner
#8
lol at how PCWorld quote it as 1.8Mhz and not 1.8Ghz :P
#9
This was £214 lastweek- it was discussed last week on MSE
#10
Just bought this from the website for delivery next week... Voted HOT !!:-D

Your order is only confirmed when they send you a dispatch/confirmation email.

Someone on MSE has already said hers was cancelled, for the second time.

One thing I have noticed with PCW, selecting the cheapest generic 5-7 working day delivery option usually results in a quicker dispatch. My gf got hers in 2 days.

I don't think anyone who ordered in the last few hours will get it now. That said, do bookmark this page on pcworld and look out for round 3. I reckon they will have more, at what price i do not know.

DONT BUY

I Ordered One Last Week And They Took The Money Off My Credit Card And Then Cancelled. When I Phoned Up And Asked Why They Said My Card Was Rejected Due To Security Issues Which Was Rubbish As Spoke To My Credit Card And This Was Not The Case I Was Very Upset As Have A Limited Budget To Buy A Pc And This One Fitted In The Price Just Ended Up Waisting Alot Of Time And Money On The Phone Sorting It Out.

What Reason Did They Give You For Cancelling And Did They Take The Money Off Your Card?

WHAT I CAN GUESS IS THEY WILL ONLY GET ONE IN AT A TIME WHEN SOMEONE RETURNS ONE DUE TO A FAULT AND MARK IT DOWN DUE TO THE FAULT FROM WHAT I CAN SEE WITHOUT FIXING IT (E.G. POWER BUTTON ABOVE) AND A FEW PEOPLE ORDER IT AND ONLY ONE GETS EXCEPTED AND THE REST GET CANCELLED

THEY WOULDN'T EVEN GIVE ME THE OPTION OF HAVING THE NEXT ONE THAT COMES IN COMPLETE WAIST OF TIME

I got one onf these at the original 214 quid price,

Its a great PC.

There are 2 PCI slots spare really as one has a PCI modem card in it you can dump. plus there is a PCI express slot

There are 2 memory slots with a 1gb stick in 1 , so a spare to upgrade.

4 SATA ports with one in use with the 250gb hard drive, 1 IDE port with the DVDRW using 1 socket on it, so a spare to allow you to install an old ide hard drive if you need to.

An a nice suprise it has Gigabit networking on board rather than the normal 10/100

Its whisper quiet, and the build quality seems good, I bought it as a replacment for my daughters 3 year old P4 3Ghz and it seems great.

The only problem we had like most who got it was that the option to create a VISTA recovery disc would not work, but after a few calls to PCworld they supplied Vista recovery discs

Impossible to build for the price and even though its gone up 20 quid a great deal

At least 7 or 8 people on the MSE board reported getting the unit from the first batch and seemed happy with the quality they vertainly did not seem used!

excellent definitly added to my fav links.... just in case more arrive

Got a Packard Bell refurb last month-great price however the hard drive sounded like someone shaking peas in a tin can. It passed tests I ran and wasnt faulty...just far too noisy.

I rejected it and bought the Dell 22" deal that has been so popular-much better and the case is far better put together than the Packard Bell.

For what it's worth, I bought a recon Advent computer from Currys (same people who own PCWorld) on the cheap and it was one of the worst purchases I ever made. So many software bugs, sound card issues, graphics issues etc, and the damn thing kept overclocking and restarting itself every 10-45 mins even though I never used it for anything more stressful than writing a letter.

Spent a ton of money on the unhelpful helpline, was told I would not get a refund as it was software issue and could be fixed (even though they couldn't) and Currys store didin't want to know since it was a web purchase. Ended up walking into Currys and refusing to leave before I got a refund.

Lesson - You get what you pay for an the spec is not the be all and end all of everything!

If you want a quality, affordable, computer, in a store, go to Staples and buy a HP for £100 more.

Oh, and the speakers were missing from the delivery!

What is the link for the HP PC at staples?
#25
Well mine arrived at noon in the largest box I've ever seen! It was like the chinese doll, box in a box in a box.

So I booted it up and ITS GOOD! Its fast, whisper quiet, even very fast running Home Premium (I've only ever used Business Vista before). Suffice it to say, its fast, it does not feel like its got to think about every instruction. Its pretty well made too, its got lots of usb ports but has ps2 sockets for mouse and keyboard (which I prefer). Lovely fast NIC port, good graphics card with DVI and vga out.

I've put MS Office 2007 on it and it flies.

Lets try it for a week or two. But based on 3 hours job's a good'un.

Also, sad to say its much better than the E520 Dell I bought a month ago with similar spec that cost £360 (no screen) from deal on here that was headlined at £222, which I beefed up to include 250gb HD, 1 Gb Memory, 256 Mb video card with MS Business Vista. In fact thats so slow I'm thinking of putting XP Pro on that to give it a chance.

Like this deal, oh and it is new, still got cellophane on the visible bits!

Thanks, thanks.

When did you place your order?

sat 11 54am been playing with for the last 5 hours its great

I have an issue which PC World are investigating at the moment.

The Spec says

Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 Processor
- 1.8MHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache
- Microsoft Windows Vista Premium
- 1GB DDR RAM
- 250GB Hard Disk
- Multi-Format Dual Layer DVD RW Drive
- 512MB X1300 Graphics
- 7-in-1 Media Card Reader
- 6 No of USB connections
- 1 PCI Slot

But when I run the hardware checks I find that the graphics card is a 128Mb not 512Mb. First stab at an answer from PC World was not helpful as they talk about shared memory (which is NOT the same as 512 Mb Graphics).

Actually the report on the video card says

128mb graphics
256Mb shared
total 383 Mb graphics

Most importantly the Aero interface does not run. Yet the spec for the X1300 specifically says (quote from http://ati.amd.com/products/RadeonX1300/index.html)

"On PCs configured to Microsoft Windows Vista™ Premium system requirements, this product supports the Premium Windows Aero™ User Experience within: Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Enterprise."

So much as I like this machine PC World are going to have to sort this out as they are still selling this PC (with TFT screens) as 512 Mb graphics which mine certainly is not.

Any thoughts from other peeps?
#28
I think the 512 quoted would have been 128 onboard and the rest shared. Except this one has been changed (sensibly) so that less of the RAM is taken up by the graphics card. I would just buy another Graphics card, tbh.

Just to clarify this is the score for your Advent and not your Dell?

My Dell E520 also has the X1300 card with 256mb ram and it runs Aero fine. I have also had a dell with onboard graphics and that ran Aero fine.

Have you checked to see if Aero hasn't been switched off (being a refurb someone might have used it first). Does it come with a restore DVD or partition to restore the operating system?

Also check that you don't have Vista Home Basic installed as that doesn't have Aero.
#32
The Dell should have come with a 256Mb card but its a 128 Mb card too, so thats being investigated. In fairness PC World have acknowledged the complaint and are looking into it.

Aero is not disabled AFAIK (how do you do that?) and system restore will zap all the software I've put on it.

Murkier and murkier.

This Vista is wierd, much more complicated to manage than XP Pro.

The Dell has has Vista Business, the Advent has Home Premium.

For interest the Dell Performance Figures are

Processor 4.7
Memory 4.5
Graphics 3.7
Gaming Graphics 3.2
Hard Disk 5.3

The Aero option is just not visible for either machine under personaliZation

Both have basic 128Mb cards, one sold as 512 Mb (advent) and one sold as 256Mb (dell).

Click on Personalization, then click Window Color and Appearance, then click Open Classic Appearance Properties for More Color Options. In the Color Scheme box you will see options for Windows Aero or Windows Basic.
#34
Yes Windows Aero is the theme (in both cases) but the rotating 3D windows thing just does not happen, but I do get transparent window edges!!

Should we take this to exchange by email?
#35
Dell have agreed the card they supplied is wrong, ie they gave 128Mb instead of 256 Mb, so we'll see if that makes any difference. Now to pursue PC World.

Email from PC World received today - persistence pays :-D

Dear N----- M.......

Thank you for your email of 25 April 2007.

I have checked the specification of your product. The specification you are quoting is correct, the graphic card should be a 512MB X1300 Graphics. If you would like to contact us on (**********) , or alternatively to discuss whether you would like a replacement or a refund.

I assure you that this is an isolated incident and does not reflect the high level of service we offer to all of our customers. If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely

So what are you pressing for the "rotating 3D windows"? Should be Windows Key and Tab? Not Alt and Tab.
#38
Hey, this is the exact same PC I got. I paid £499 for the base unit and a 17" TFT monitor :-(
#39
Does anyone have the XP drivers for this computer? I'm having a hard time tracking them down.

I know it's a long shot, but I thought someone who bought one may have downgraded to XP.
