http://android.modaco.com/category/474/advent-vega-vega-modaco-com/ , if you need the performance pack it can be picked up on the Vega section of XDA-Developers

Thought I'd say it in this thread as well, but the Tegra 2 is an amazing processor for tablet PCs and phones alike. The keen pricing, fast processor (dual-core) and HDMI make this an excellent tablet choice!

WOW, great price... to think they are selling lesser phoned than this sim-free for £500+...

Sooooo tempted, could ask for it for my birthday but nothing wrong with my netbook so can't justify.

I know! I've been after a decent andriod phone since I got this tablet (something like the HTC Desire HD) but they seem to cost so much I'm going to have to stick with my nokia E51 for a while :(

With the modaco upgrades it's easy to get this tablet onto the full google market, flash enabled, using external usb drives and external HDD's, tethering to a phone for 3g and connecting to a bluetooth gps for a rather oversized sat nav! As well as all the usual stuff like streaming music, internet radio, web browsing, media viewing etc. etc.

It really is a great product especially if you like to be able to customise your gadgets and have a good mess :)

Great product, I love mine

Voted hot! cheaper than the time when i have bought it.
This is an underated device, like what above has said this is a Tegra 2 device. It is so advance at the point of time when it is launch, the closes competitor probably was the toshiba foilo 100 but that is 3-4 times as much. Until now this devices still remain very competitive especially at this price point, and Tegra 2 device is going to be a trent this year, with all this tablets and phone just appeared in the ces. I have to give little advice is dont buy any vega accesories seems rip off to me

Yeah - I was looking at those - they do seem to do everything I need, I do need to get it on o2 though so it depends how tricky that is. Should be getting some extra cash in March so will probably make a decision then between 2 new phones for me & the GF or a kinnect.

I just bought the advent vega, and it's a really slick device. Was hesitant about modding it, but it's really easy, and once done it supports flash (so BBC iPlayer works a dream) and opens up the full Android Marketplace. Haven't used it for much other than web browsing and Angry Birds(!) so far - but it's well worth the £250 I paid for it. Really fast & responsive, and able to do pretty much all you want from a tablet.
I must admit, I'd prefer an iPad (for iTunes & better apps), but for half the price this is an astonishing bit of kit.
#12
r these any good x
#13
We have one these and an ipad. Its a really good device and a bargain at this price.

I am very tempted to go out and buy one of these, however I think I am going to hold out for a tablet which can be docked on a keyboard to enable it to be used like a laptop - when the need arises, although this shouldn't be that often. Maybe I should just buy one now!?
#15
Do these have a sim card slot or is it WIFI only? I don't see any mention of a GPRS or 3G modem in the specs on the Currys website.

lol you seem a little undecided! There is a dock coming out with several usb ports (not sure how much it'll be though) or you can change the usb mode on the custom rom so a keyboard will work in it.

I was undecided too when I got mine at the start of dec - I went for it in the end thinking that I could take it back within a week if I didn't want it under the distance selling regs or just make up an intermittent fault to get it returned but even with the slightly buggy early software releases I've never considered returning it since it arrived.

It's good to mess with too because (so far anyway) it's been unbrickable - you can always reflash it no matter how much you screw it up trying different things which for me has been handy as this is my first taste or an android device.

no just wifi - there is a 3g model coming out but you can tether it to a mobile which I much prefer anyway - I always have my phone on me and it saves me paying for another contract just for the tablet - it's just a couple of clicks on the phone to share it's 3g connection out as a hotspot then the vega connects to it as it would any normal wi-fi.

This has a docking station that charges it and provides both HDMI out and USB in. This means that you can either connect the device to an external monitor (eg your television) and then use a regular keyboard/mouse combo (wireless or otherwise) OR use the device as a standalone computer using the keyboard/mouse combo.

I have one, one of the many things I use it for is like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuRn2UhzoSM&feature=related The really neat thing is that it pulls info from IMDB about your media collection then displays it on the vega automatically as shown in the video. What the video doesnt show is that once you select the media you want to view (thats music, film, tv, etc) you can control the playing of it from the deivce also (turns it into a big remote). The other cool thing about this feature is that you can preview it. so if someone hasnt seen the movie they can read about it, see whos in it, find out who directed it then watch a preview of it online via the automatic IMDB link. The other thing is that it links all media in your collection eg if you select one film by "christopher lambert" and hes lited in the credits, you then select him from the credit list and it will show all movies in your collection that star him.

and thats just one of the pieces of software thats available for the device.

The other really cool thing is that if you have a an android phone you can wirelessly tether this and the phone together so that this can be used outside of the home using your phones 3g /4g connection.

ordered mine last week when it was in stock (did not know of a discount code then -hey hoo)
its not arrvied yet, but cannot wait to get it. What made me buy one?

1. the reviews it gets are always awesome
2. the amount of modding you can do to it on the modaco website
3. it was in stock at the time. previously it was not
4. its dual core, and the chip gets a good right up
5. its price-for me its a steal!!!! when you compare it to andriod phones
#19
Can I order this to store and get this price? Alternately, can I use a Currys gift card as part payment online?

Can this be tethered without modding it (HTC Desire)

Also compared to the 'liquid' like touchscreen of the iPad is the Vega similar or a bit jerky?

Thanks all

Obviously 2 totally different beasts, but think you said in another thread, you actually preferred the Vega to the iPad (for doing similar tasks)

Mind me asking Mate... are you still of that opinion?
#22
This looks pretty good. Is there anything it can't do being a poor man's ipad?
#23
Will this get the gingerbread update or not
#24
I wonder why flash support is turned off and you have to manually re-enable it? Seems odd as that is a huge selling point over the ipad so you'd have thought they would make this a big deal.

Might be some daft licensing issue.
#26
As far as I know all you need to do is download Flash in the Market and it will work. The reason Advent cannot sell it with flash is because Advent do not have Adobes permission to do so. I could be wrong.

Just to answer a couple of questions

Yes you can tether it to the HTC desire without modding it (it creates a proper wi-fi hotspot)
You can tether it to any phone (which creates an ad-hoc wifi hotspot) with a quick patch - I tether it to the Nokia E51 which is symbian with a free app called joikuspot

Flash can now be downloaded from the marketplace (there was an update a day or 2 ago which means you no longer have to do the other fix) Once they have sorted the licence out it will start shipping with flash again - I'll update the OP.

As for gingerbread as far as I know it's supposed to be getting it but I'm pretty new to android so I don't really know the inns and outs of this? Maybe someone who knows the whole scene a bit better can update us?

RE: Gingerbread... if its already possible to put custom roms on this then I would be more or less certain that it will get Gingerbread (if not officially then unofficially on a custom rom).
#31
Any chance of an update to 3.0 in the future? This thing looks great but I'm holding out for a tablet with android 3.0.

Anybody got the code working? Not orking for me.

I used capitals but didnt work. I then realised that pressing return on the keyboard doesnt click the apply button - you have to do it click it manually to get the discount to get accepted.

Have to say that I am tempted. have been on ebay for the last 3 days trying to find a simple colour e-reader and web surfer and this is appealing (slightly larger and £100 dearer). I was waiting for the moto xoom to invest in for a serious media tablet. I think i will have a cup of tea and then decide.

Do you guys know if we can update this to 3.0 Honeycomb when it is released in March?

I suppose you could because it has a decent processor. It just depends if Advent release it or a developer does it on his own back.
#38
I took mine back after 3 weeks.

Very dissapointed. screen is terrible viewing agles are the worse i have seen on any device. You have to have it at the right angle or the picture vanishes in a wash of white light. I also had to use a stylus becuse when typing with my fingers the wrong letters were input.also multiple characters are entered when just pressing once.

heres one link
http://android.modaco.com/content/advent-vega-vega-modaco-com/325000/vega-touch-screen-issue-cause-of-multiple-keypress-etc-video-included/

I now have a galaxy tab and it is 100 times better than the vega in every department
#39
The calibration APK fixes the typing.
#40
apparently yes. but no one knows for sure until its released for the Vega.

fyi - for those that have Quidco buy it from the dixon website you get 4% back rather than 3%. It all helps!

just bought one.
