Advent Vega Tablet PC - £207.00 @ Dixons Travel

I bought the Advent Vega for my partner on Sunday from Dixons Travel at Glasgow Airport. They had them in stock and selling for £207. Flash is officially supported now but needs to be downloaded with new firmware version 1.09. Please note this is a real bargain but doesn't natively come with any google apps. I had to install a custom rom from MoDaCo. Definitely worth £207!!

Whats the cheapest you can get into Dixons travel for - otherwise its a bit of a pointless deal - like saying its got postage but you can always drive and pick it up...

Cold from me.

Maybe a pointless deal for you but not necessarily for other people who maybe travelling and this gives them a heads up.

Hot for me.

The site does not give any prices , crap in my opinion ,ice cold .

If you have to factor in the price of postage on other deals - you should have to factor in the price of the cheapest airline ticket that would allow you this deal as its not going to cost the above for anyone who doesn't already have a ticket hence pointless deal for 99.99% of people.
#8
For me, it's about equivalent to the in-store deals that turn out to be available in one store in the Outer Hebrides.
I voted it up, according to the OP it's a current deal and actually available, even if only a small percentage of the population are likely to take it up.
#9
Its worth noting that Dixon's tax free charge does in fact include vat, they just reduce it by an amount equivalent to the vat if you are travelling inside the EU, so if you think you can claim it as a legitimate business expense you could still claim the vat back.

This deal may be of limited use, but there will be plenty of people using this site due to travel somewhere in the next few weeks so seems like a valid deal to me, heat added

The Vega can be had for £244.99 from PC World and/or Currys (see links below). If you're flying from any of the airports that Dixons operate from then this is a great deal. If however you're just wanting to purchase the Vega you'll need to find a flight cheaper than £37.99 for this to make financial sense.

For those interested in getting more from the Vega and having Google Market fully available to you, look no further than Modaco. http://android.modaco.com/category/474/advent-vega-vega-modaco-com/

And I would have thought the guys over at Modaco will have Honeycomb available for this tablet very shortly.

Personally I'm in two minds whether to buy a tablet or not. I'm just not sure I'll use one and I like a proper keyboard.... but I would love to have one for a weekend or so to see how I got on with it.

Not a bad deal and then to anyone who manages to pick one up head over to modaco and see the brilliant work they are doing over there
#12
Or another alternative, is to know someone that works air-side and ask them kindly to pick you one up :p + ask them also to pay cash, because if for some reason you decide to return it and it was bought with a credit card, the money can only be refunded back to to the card or cash for cash

Advent Vega + MoDaCo V8 ROM is one amazing device !

If anybody takes this seriously then don't bother as you would require a valid boarding pass to be able to purchase anything from a Duty Free shop.

Sorry I'm afraid your wrong... Airside staff cannot buy from the BAA shops, like world duty free, so no cheap booze etc but most other retailers they can, including HMV and Dixons

lol tbf it is a little known fact, I only found out because my Traffic Controller mate, offered to pick me one up.

Where are you up to mate regards Tabs? Vega / iPad / Xoom / still undecided lol. The problem is with the Vega, unless you know someone that's got a modded one and you can try it out, its difficult to understand the potential. Its the speed I find most impressive, it boots in 35secs then it flashes round websites like there's no tomorrow!
#17
That's it spot on mate. I'd love to try one but they're like hens teeth. You just can't get your hands on one!

I use my PC a LOT, is there any real comparison? Oh and, your pal can get me one! :p

Hope you're well bud.

Out of the box no, but with a little help from Modaco it does .... http://android.modaco.com/category/474/advent-vega-vega-modaco-com/

Note iPad doesn't have Flash.

Adding 'The Market' to the Vega really is very simple and as I've already stated, the likelihood of the Modaco boys getting Honeycomb on this is very high.

can you put a sim in this tablet
#22
This is still good deal for those travelling out the country soon god you people voting cold because you not going away.
#23
Hot!

The vega is the only android tablet that's got me excited (well the xoom also, but i'm priced out) but the 2 things which puts me off is the screen is no where near as good as the ipad and honeycomb isn't yet released.
#24
For £207 this is a bargain my mrs loves the one I got her. In many ways its better than my Ipad, flash support, upgradable storage, usb support plays any file format out of the box. Etc etc etc. Yes the screen is not as good as the ipad and it doesnt look as nice but functionality wise its actually a far better product. Its also pretty much half the price even with the recent ipad 1 reductions.

No.

I have one of these. I installed the market, and, if you hold it steady, it's great for browsing, email, games, etc. It's very fast. Speakers are better then my netbook at least. The only real let down for me, and it's a biggy, is the screen viewing angle issue. Change viewing angles by a few inches - which happens with a hand held device - and the appearance of the image on screen changes quite a bit. If they put a good quaity screen on this, it would be great.

I'll probably be selling mine later in the year - but only when a similar quality tablet with a better screen becomes available for £250 or less.

Just to confirm that all staff who work at Glasgow Airport can buy anything sold in Dixons. I have bought many things for family and friends.

Half the price of an iPad 1 ?? How do you figure that?

The normal retail is £249. The base iPad was reduced to £329. Half of that is £164.50

I considered this and a refurb iPad 1 16GB wi-fi which was £289 direct from Apple and is just as good a buying a brand new one. The price difference over the Advent was only £40. Total no contest as far as I was concerned in making a decision. iPad all the way. The refurb iPad is fantastic value at £289, has a vastly superior build quality, 000's of iPad specific apps and will always have a high resale value. What's the Advent going to be worth in 12 months time? About £50 on ebay.

I wouldn't describe this as cheap (unlike some of the other android tablets) but i would agree that with 2nd hand prices of the iPad around the £250 mark currently (i got one last week for that) it's probably a better bet
#32
At £207 this is worth having. I have an ipad and love it but often lose it to the GF & kids. Plus now and again it would be nice to be able to watch ITV player & 4OD in bed.

The screen viewing angle is TERRIBLE and Android 2.x is crap on a tablet for a novice. It's very inconsistent and I've no idea why they decided to remove a hard "home" button.

If this is your first tablet, I'd seriously tell you to look at the ipad 1 which for £329 is AWESOME value.

Hot price though and I'll prob pick one up next time I'm travelling.
#33
£43 off is a good deal, so what if it's in-airport only? Plenty folk use airports you know!

Not a chance - android phones hold their value (not as well as the fan-boy apple stuff) the tablets will too.
#34
Anyone know if this has come down further in price now that the dixons website is selling at 199
#35
We must remember a large amount of people do infact travel regularly, & Dixons Travel is open to both Domestic AND International passengers! so great for business passengers AND those going on holiday as you can even shop, and collect it on your return free of charge!. The DT at Glasgow Airport now has the Advent Vega, the Motorola Xoom (exclusive), Archos, & even have some ipad 1s available at a great price, and I've been assured ipad2 will be in stock in a matter of days. They also sell the Kindle at a cheap £105 with them in stock to take away on the day.
