Looking good.

Fantastic graphics card for a laptop in this price range. Plenty of people on the net would say you need at least an i5 for gaming, but the videos on youtube with the i3 look great so I'm quite tempted.

i3-330m i more than enough for any midrange GPU like HD5650 or GT420/GT435 etc.

got the £259 Toshiba C660 deal - this is pretty decent if you really need the gpu.

Only difference is the cpu; they're running an i5 on that one. Should be fairly close though.

Crysis 2 isn't quite the benchmark that its predecessor was although this is still pretty impressive

The gpu is fantastic for a laptop range. Got the same one running on my dell. It's stock speed can also be increased if needed. Played Dead Space 2, Dragon Age 2, Black Ops and Crysis 2 on high to very high settings. Although I am running an i-core5 cpu.

Dreadful keyboard.
Terrible memory compatibility.
Sh!t customer service (Both seller & manufacturer).

Do yourself a favour....AVOID.

Can't imagine what you'd do on a core i3 that would need more than 4gb tbh. And if you do, you bought the wrong laptop in the first place.

Great price

Anyone know if the 10%off code still works? CODE = SUNNY-1

Note if it does then it was found from the following recent deal by matthausp

Samsung Q430 14" HD Laptop, Core i3-350m, 4GB Ram, 320GB HDD, Dedicated Graphics, Bluetooth, HDMI, Windows 7 64bit - £389.97 Delivered *Using Voucher Code* @ Save On Laptops

Also would this purchase qualify for the Toshiba trade in scheme?? I have emailed Toshiba for the answer !!!

Hot!!! I have the L650-1CJ which is 99% identical and I LOVE IT!! I can play games no problem and on med/high! Seriously if you're in the market for an affordable gaming laptop this is the one to get.

I should also mention that even though it may seem to 'only' be an i3, it's a brilliant chip and you'll have no issues with it.

Offer code SUNNY-1 not valid for products in your basket
Offer code APR-01 not valid for products in your basket

i got basically the same laptop without the GPU but an i5 instead of it.
i dont see why people are complaining about the keyboard. apart from the fact that its easy to spot dust on it, its not bad at all.
maybe you just broke yours mashing away at it thinking the harder you press the buttons the faster your character will move (i used to think that when i was small =P)

That may be, but is it enough for your game? I think the i3-330m is a disappointment in an otherwise strong laptop.

Good for the price - respectable gaming laptop for sub £500 - Hot!

I tested few gaming laptops with HD5650 or GT420m and CPUs:
Intel Pentium P6100 2GHz
Intel Core i3 330M 2.1GHz
Intel Core i5 460M 2.5-2.8GHz
AMD Athlon II X2 P320 2.1 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache!!!
AMD Turion II X2 P520 2.3 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache
AMD Phenom II X3 N870 2.3 GHz, 1.5 MB L2 cache

Believe it or not Athlon II X2 P320 was the only one which bottleneck GPU

proof
Intel Pentium P6100 2GHz+GT420 vs Intel Core i5 460M 2.5-2.8GHz+GT420

Hmmm looks a good deal. I thought Toshiba were one of the better brands for laptops too?

Apologies for my ignorance but I take it this isn't a Sandybridge processor? Are those out in laptops yet? As they're still calling them Core i3, i5 etc. etc. I don't know how to tell the difference.

i3 2.1GHz Sandy Bridge = i3 2.4GHz Arrandale

gaming on i3-330m + HD5730(higher clocked HD5650, around 10% faster)

I have had confirmation that Toshiba will offer a paltry £50 for a trade in of an old laptop against this machine..... Not great, that and the lack of a voucher code will probably stop a purchase by me :( Have given heat though for a good deal even at £449 !!!

A question regarding the outside casing. Is it gloss black or matt black? Looks matt on the saveonlaptops site but the pictures are poor. Cant find any good ones on the internet.

I would like gloss black to match my iphone and buffalo drive! Sad? yes! But I like things to match... :-D

I ordered one on Monday night using the free 5 day delivery and it arrived on Wednesday. So far I'm pretty impressed by it for gaming. The battery life seems a bit short though, and the mic sounds horrible (might be some setting I need to change). Also the screen bends if you press the bottom of it in the middle! A decent piece of kit and a bargain for the money, but not perfect.

It is matt, btw dvagGP.

Had an update from Toshiba that they will offer £75 trade in on this one, apparently the first email they sent me was a mistake !!

Still undecided on a laptop after sending a HP back because it was so awful!!!...

Anyone know of any codes for this one yet?
#26
Having mic issues with mine - the built in mic does work, but the background noise is horrendous. I've updated the Conexant audio driver, but this hasn't made it any better. Any suggestions?
#27
Looks hot. Does anyone know if the HDD is a 7200rpm one?
#28
Got this and played about £100 more last year, laptop is decent, keyboard is ok; however, overall build quality is poor-the mouse pad has worn badly.

it's not really glossy, is shiny though, got some weird patterned finish

Scorchio!

Just purchased one, if the build-quality is the same as the cheaper L500D-16M we currently have, then I will be pleased at 12 months on and it is in perfect condition still.

Can anyone who has bought one of these let me know, if they are pleased with the laptop before I spend my hard earned?

Thanks

Well, I've pretty happy with it - I've run Borderlands, L4D2 and BFBC2 on it. With any of them if you put everything on max it will drop frames when loads of stuff is going on, but play on medium settings and everything is smooth. Because of the lower resolution and smaller screen than most desktops, medium settings actually look surprisingly good.

There are a couple of minor issues. The keyboard took a little getting used to, but it's OK. The screen is weak - if you carry it open one-handed while using it then there's a high chance you may bend the screen (hard to explain, but just don't do it!).

On mine the mic is utter crap. I think it's faulty, but I'm not sure whether it is worth sending it back - it'd be my luck if I then got a replacement with stuck pixels, which would be a much bigger issue. There is a mic socket though, so it isn't the end of the world.

ok cheers skipster, wouldnt really use the mic so not too bothered about that. And laptops shouldnt be carried one handed anyway so again not really bothered about that but are you saying its a weak build quality in general?

The screen thing did concern me a bit and I wouldn't fancy its chance if it got dropped on the floor with the screen open, but the rest of it seems pretty solid to me. Sorry I can't be more help, but I haven't used enough other laptops to compare the build quality/strength.

Thats fine mate, I appreciate your feedback. Just want to make sure I get as much for my money as possible. (what kind of HUKD member would I be if i didn't, lol)

I will bear it in mind, as I continue my search.
