I don't know ow much about steam. I have a macbook so are these games compatible only with Windows or are they played in the steam app itself?

This particular game will only work on Windows. (Launched from the Steam app). But Steam does have lots of mac games. When viewing the game page, it will show a logo stating which operating systems they will run on e.g. Windows, mac, linux, it will also show you the minimum and recommended system requirements.

I play all my Steam games on Mac (currently 300ish), If you have a copy of Windows you can bootcamp your macbook to allow you to boot into Windows.

I use Windows purely for gaming.

To be honest, you're better off getting the original 'complete collection' for a similar price off Amazon or eBay. The HD version seemed to be quite buggy. Not sure if they've released patches or anything since I last tried it.

I often play this on my Macbook with Bootcamp.

No. No you're not. The HD version is continuously maintained, runs on modern OSes, and has great multiplayer. I've never had any issues with it. Unless you're some kind of hardcore, professional AOE2 player, get HD.

This is pretty much the standard sale price for this game, but, compared to the full price, it's still great, and I wouldn't expect it to be cheaper for a long, long time.

Fair enough then. At this price, it's worth the risk anyway! (I guess you would assume most people buying the HD version have the originals anyway!)

Steam shows you what OS it will work on. Also with Steam if you have a mac and windows, you can play on both (if available of course).

I imagine so. I lent my copy to a friend all those years ago. He lost it. We're not friends anymore.
