Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures Features:

* Enter the true Conan experience: The first official Conan online RPG sends you on a brutal journey in the footsteps of the worlds greatest fantasy hero. Meet Conans friend and foes, battle demons and monsters known from 70 years of Conan history, and step up to the ultimate challenge and befriend the mighty king Conan himself.
* Explore the world of Conan: Enter Age of Conan's gigantic and unique gameworld containing more than 30 distinct regions spread across the three mighty nations of Aquilonia, Cimmeria and Stygia. Explore deep jungles, burning deserts, inhospitable mountains, vast valleys, dark dungeons or gleaming cities, and take part in an incredible journey of exploration and adventure.
* Real Combat Engine: Experience Funcoms revolutionary Real Combat engine, and fight mounted or on the ground. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures features a new multi-point melee system allowing players to swing their weapons where they direct, in real-time, going head-on against the formulaic nature of online RPG combat. The Real Combat engine also allow players to team up in battle formations and command both Conan NPCs and other players in epic multiplayer battles, as well as giving you the chance to participate in massive Hyborian sieges.
* Single-player vs. massively multiplayer: Emerge as a hero from the story-driven single-player experience and embark into even greater adventures in the massively multiplayer part of Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. The branching single-player story is created by Age of Conan's award-winning writers, previously behind The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and Anarchy Online, so expect something extraordinary.
* PvP and PvE: Meet the ultimate resistance in human opponents, and enjoy crushing the skulls of fellow Conan players in mini-games, sieges, arena fights and drunken brawls. Charge into the world of Conan, and fight monsters and demons alone or in groups.
* Extensive guild and solo gameplay: Form guilds in the multiplayer game and lay siege to hostile castles. Let the catapults sing their merry song of death as the enemy is brutally crushed to a pulp. Team up with other Age of Conan players in large guilds, and explore a large range of Hyborian social gameplay opportunities. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures also offers extensive solo gaming opportunities, taking you through an amazing single-player journey and deep into the lands of Hyboria.

It costs about £10 a month to play and is nowhere near as good as world of warcraft or warhammer online.

Not really suitable for kids either tbh. It says 18+ on the box for a good reason.

Yup. I'd vet it first. But thanks for the advice. If it proves to be unsuitable then I'll either keep it for myself or offer it for sale. Worth a gamble at this price, especially because of the Collector's Edition contents.

It used to be an 18+ but it has been toned down. There is no more nudity, not more bar fights, etc etc. One of the best things about AoC was that it was made for adults.

I must say this was one of the most disappointing games ever, for me. Very good ideas, very pretty game, very poorly executed, very typical FunCom. It's still plagued by bugs that have been around since it was in Beta - it was simply not ready for release and as such it has turned many gamers away, meaning that many servers have been shut down and the population is constantly shrinking.

If I were you, I'd save that tenner.

The whole thing went so badly that the Producer/Game Director quit after 16 years over it.

Have you played it lately? its a great game. Lots of stuff has been sorted out, most people say its **** havnt tried it...
#17
Its a great game. The game just didnt deliver on its promises so it was a huge letdown.

The game is not going to die out anytime soon. Major features are being planned and a big update is about to be released within the month (directx10 update, new areas).

I bought this collectors pack at release when it was £50, its pretty worthless now though!

I would too if it took 16 years to produce ;)

Seriously, though, thanks for your comments.

If I don't expect too much I'll not be disappointed.

Go in with low expectations & anything that entertains is a bonus.

Thanks.

this. thats why. Why play a game so flawed as AOC when for cheaper you can play a game like world of warcraft?

11 million people cant be wrong.

I love that statistic "11 million people".

My two eldest kids have 6 user names between them.

How many of the quoted total worldwide are people who sign-up for the 30 day period then do not go back?

Please tell me why you think "Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures" is 'flawed'.

I'm not doubting you if you have played both this & "World of Warcraft" but at present you haven't given me anything that leads me to believe you are basing your opinion on any facts.

Thanks.

the 11 million statistic is based on how many people PAY for memebership and doesnt include the 30 day free trials. Age of Conan as others said promised loads of stuff. When released nothing was there they promised.. for example i still dont think they've implemented bar brawls. The implementation of the game was terrible. Massive lag, a stupid amount of bugs and extremly unbalanced classes. Was a good idea tha just went massively wrong. I found a stat ages ago on how many people played at begining and how many actually followed through past the 30 day free play. Not many was the answer. If you wanna try something new to World of warcraft try warhammer online. I played that for abit and found it quite fun. But age of conan is terrible. And yes ive played both.

(11 million on a month-by-month basis is still a heck of a lot of people worldwide. I am willing to bet, erm, , a paperclip...[!] that at least a few of these are paying for their membership & not playing regular [if at all]).

OK, thanks. So, if we are not aware of what the game was supposed to deliver & we don't find the bugs too much of a distraction then it'll be OK? I'm guessing there are still people playing though, and we don't turn up to find tumbleweed rolling across the landscape.

Is it just an online title, or can you play offline as well?

Either way, I think one of my kids has played a "Warhammer" title on the PSP console. I don't think he was too excited about it, but he hasn't tried a PC variant.

Thanks again.

i get the feeling you know little about MMORPGs. Warhammer online is basicaly like world of warcraft. No you cannot play AOC offline, it is an online game. the servers maybe smaller now as lack of players but will still be enough to notice.
and of course, out of those 11 million some probably dont play just pay for membership, however 8 quid a month and not playing?! these people are crazy!

Direct debits to bank accounts & automatic debits to credit cards would make up some of this statistic.

Either way, I am familiar with this gaming genre but it is one I choose not to play as I don't have the inclination or the time. If I were to "dip my toe in the water" I want to make the right decision on the right title, and not put myself off this genre for life.

Would you rate "World of Warcraft" (including the recent expansion pack) above, say, "Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning"?

Maybe I'll reword my query:

Can you play online over the Internet only?
Or, can you play via a Local Area Network (rather than "offline")?

Thanks again for your patience :)

The resurgence of the thread is seeing the heat being added frequently now.

Warhammer online is okay, but i still preffer wow. just get a free trial of world of wracraft for 14 days and see what you think? If you need a free trial just PM me your email and ill send you one :)

That's very kind, thank you. "Rep" added.

I don't think I'll need to trouble you (further) though as I can just use one of my kids' accounts.

I do appreciate your time replying though.

I bought this game before checking hotuk deals and nowhere on the advert does it say it's a subscription basis game! Is this definitely the case? I thought I got a good deal until I read that.. gutted. Will have to send it back!!!
