All the episodes from series one to eight of Jimmy Perry and David Croft's It Ain't Half Hot Mum, first broadcast in 1974. The series follows the exploits of a Royal Artillery Concert Party during the Second World War. Created by David Croft and Jimmy Perry, it seemed a natural follow-up to their smash hit Dad's Army. Another ensemble piece, it drew on both writers' wartime experience in India and set the action in Deolali: a British army camp 100 miles north-east of Bombay where everyone's gone 'a bit doolally'.

The concert party is a rag-tag collection of soldiers who'd rather sing, dance and drag up to entertain the troops than be sent forward to the front line. Characters include effeminate drag artist Gunner 'Gloria' Beaumont (Melvyn Hayes); the diminutive Gunner 'Lofty' Willie Sugden (Don Estelle) who possesses a hauntingly beautiful singing voice and ineffectual Colonel Reynolds (Donald Hewlett). However, the show's stand-out personality is the bombastic, eye-rolling Battery Sergeant Major Williams (Windsdor Davies).

I remember this being really funny when I was a kid. It was homophobic, classist, and above all racist.

It doesn't seem so funny now.

I know what you are saying but is it non-PC or are we just a bit more sophisticated when it comes to humour these days? Seeing a white guy with brown make up on shaking his head and saying "oh crickey" just seems a bit, well, naff. It's part of my childhood and I feel a bit nostalgic for it, but it just doesn't seem funny anymore.

Sure some things don't stand the test of time like this & love thy neighbour.
But as far as being more sophisticated MOST DEFINITELY NOT! All we've just replaced is the older offensivness with swearing and crudeness mainly centered around chavs-like behaviour.
The comedy is well written and acted together with some loveable characters so well woth a punt.
Rememeber......." I will not have gossip in this jungle....sing Lofty."

Agreed...it's not about being part of the 'PC mob'....it's just not as funny any more. This show had great comedy performances and writing and I'm sure a lot of it is still LMAO funny but the 'racist'/'homophobic' bits would just be jarring now....I'd be thinking...'this is a bit strange' rather than getting into the story/comedy.

Each to their own though!

Does that mean Manuel from faulty towers is also racist for having a jew play a spaniard?. honestly. laughing at someone using "homophobic" slurs such as benign dated phrase poofta is not condoning his views, its situation comedy.
