Tool. Risk has to be weighed up ... Do you ever leave the home?! Actually keep your ridiculous believes, more for us.

there is an ever so slight difference between leaving your house encountering risk I.e. falling over, than putting yourself in actual danger of a terrorist attack.

I'm from glasgow lived here all my life. I personally don't see the appeal the west highland way on the other hand... if you like the country and to see some of beautiful Scotland ditch the city and walk the west highland way :)

I can vouch that this apartment is in a great location, slap bang between the city centre and the west end.

Not really between the two, but the cowcaddens subway is just near you which will get you to the west end in about 5 minutes. City centre, or part there of, is essentially on your doorstep.

Erm, yes it is!

Have you haters ever been to Glasgow or Derry?

Yes. Both, several times.

No issues of drug battles or violence against tourists in the touristy areas such as Cancun/Playa del Carmen/Tulum in Quintana Roo state. The state borders are very heavily guarded by the army to stop movement by the cartels, as you'll find out if you cross states to go on a trip to Chichen Itza or further afield. Most of the holiday resorts are owned by Spanish companies like Riu, Azul and Occidental. No signs of drug activity in these areas, no one on street corners trying to sell you any form of drugs in the 7 times I have previously been to Mexico in either the Cancun or Playa del Carmen areas.

Simon, too many blissfully ignorant folks on this site. I've had the same conversation a while back but you always get some ostrich denying the truth.
at the end of the day, Mexico gets its money through nafta, pemex, and tourism. the government is happy to let cartel terrorists rule the populace as long as it doesn't infringe on those three. last cartel that stole from pemex was crushed instantly. so by folks holidaying in Mexico, they are compounding the terrorism problem in the country. who do you think owns the complexes? think about it...
that said, the majority of the violence seems to be restricted to the states of michoacan (active citizen defense forces battling cartels) and particularly in the state of tamaulipas in the north east (internal power struggle within cdg). far enough away from qr for a more safe experience.
but it's a Mexican problem, right?

Don't mention the drug war going on, or the number of deaths there. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/mexico-releases-drug-war-death-toll-estimate-killing-hour-article-1.1005618

Would a holiday to Libya, Egypt, Afghanistan, Somalia or Iraq be safer? Probably.

Interesting choice of article to display your thoughts on the Mexican drug war, the article seems to be 2 years old, I personally think the information that you are providing is a little inaccurate and this might be of better use for respective travellers. I agree with your statement saying that it is a dangerous country but I don't think any of the other countries that you have suggested could be considered as safer.

http://realtruth.org/articles/140311-005.html

Yet another interesting article that you have posed, yet I don't think you have quite read the articles that I have suggested. I don't dispute Mexico faces a drugs war problem, but many tourists have had good experiences in Mexico.

And many have great hols in Egypt, but many ignore good advice and put themselves in danger.

My son went to Mexico a couple of years ago and was advised to stay in the hotel complex by hotel workers, he went out to the local town once and admitted it was scary (guns and stereotypical drug cartel members). Had a great time but never actually saw much of Mexico.

I agree with your statement, many do not follow the good advice that is given to you by some great sources. Its a real shame that your son faced some of the situations that you have described. I am sorry to hear that, I hope your son has a much more plesent experience on his next trip (where ever he may go) :)

Great deal, my friend used to live in Bordeaux so I have visited a couple of times and it is absolutely lovely and should have great weather in June. I'd recommend getting the hire car too as there are lots of places worth visiting in the surrounding area, including the dune du Pilat :)

airbnb logoSearching for Comfortable and Affordable Accommodation at Airbnb

Airbnb has become a household name in an incredibly short period of time. Founded in 2008 by tech entrepreneurs Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, the company really took off in 2010, and by 2011 it had achieved its one millionth booking. 2011 also saw the American firm expand into the UK, where hundreds of thousands of properties are now listed all over the country.

Airbnb has now become a go-to service for people looking for cut-price holidays and accommodation for business trips almost anywhere on earth. Whether you are heading to Edinburgh for a weekend away or a Cornwall cottage, you’ll find the perfect place to stay at www.airbnb.co.uk.

Where to Buy Airbnb Products

All bookings with Airbnb take place via the company’s website. The site allows people to advertise their rooms or entire home for rent via listings that include information like the size of the property, the number of rooms, services like internet, laundry and gardens, the cost of the property per night and its location. Every listing is vetted and Airbnb work hard to ensure that both advertisers and customers behave in a trustworthy, reliable way.

To find a property near you, go to Airbnb, and scroll down until you see a search box. This is the key part of the Airbnb service (from the perspective of property-seekers) and it allows you to search locations all over the world.

Before you can make any bookings, you’ll need to create an Airbnb account. That’s so that you can introduce yourself to accommodation providers and prove you are who you say you are. Signing up doesn’t take long and it really is an excellent way to let hosts know more about you. That way, they can tailor their services to make you feel more at home.

Product Categories at Airbnb

When you’ve created an Airbnb account, you can start to explore what the site has to offer.

Basically, there are two sections at the Airbnb site: services for hosts and services for customers.

If you want to rent your property out to other users, you’ll find the “Become a host” button. If this interests you, there are three options.

  • Firstly, you could become a standard “Host”. This entails renting out a room or your whole home to Airbnb users. You’ll need to submit a few photos and a full description of what you have to offer. You will also need to plan when you can host and how much you intend to charge.
  • The second option is becoming a neighbourhood “Co-host”. This means that you won’t have to do the work of hosting yourself. Instead, your space is listed as available should people near you need to call on your services.
  • Finally, hosts can create an “Experience”. If you have specialist skills or live near somewhere exceptional, you can earn more money by creating a tourist experience for your guests to enjoy.

The other section of the site is for people seeking accommodation. This part includes:

  • Experiences – Includes a huge variety of different experiences, from hiking in the Amazon to surfing classes in Australia. Also, features special sections for fashion, art, nature, entertainment, food & drink, history, lifestyle and sporting experiences.
  • Homes – The core of the Airbnb service is the vast array of properties available to rent. You can find mansions in the suburbs, country houses, apartments in central London, French chateaus, beachfront cabins, ski chalets – everything imaginable is on Airbnb and ready for you to book. Each property has an easy to read listing with a star rating derived from the experiences of your fellow guests.
  • Featured Destinations – A section devoted to what Airbnb’s editors think are the most interesting places to visit. Along with attractions in destinations like London or Berlin, Airbnb also picks a few properties based on your profile that it feels might be appropriate for your needs.
  • Social Impact Experiences – Similar to the Experiences section, but with a social conscience. Enjoy a holiday away from work but give something back at the same time.

Trips by Airbnb

Booking Accommodation with Airbnb

If you decide to book your holiday accommodation with Airbnb, the process takes a little getting used to but is actually very simple. You’ll soon be booking apartments in New York or villas in Lanzarote at the click of a button.

  1. To make a booking, use the search box on the Airbnb site to find properties in your destination. Enter your expected arrival and departure dates and how many guests will be travelling in your party.
  2. Airbnb will now bring up a list of available properties with a map showing where they are and how much they cost.
  3. Pick a property that meets your requirements and click on its profile page. You see a button marked “Book”.
  4. Some properties allow instant booking, while others require you to message the host before they accept your reservation. If a message is required just send a polite enquiry, say who you are and why you are travelling. Your potential host will get back to you as soon as possible with an acceptance or rejection.
  5. Don’t be offended if hosts decline. Remember, you are staying in another person’s home, and it’s up to them whether they host someone. However, the vast majority of the time, hosts and travellers book without any issues.
  6. After your booking is accepted, you’ll be asked to pay. When that’s done, your booking is assured.

If you are booking an Experience with Airbnb Trips, you’ll also need to supply an extra piece of identification. Both hosts and guests will need to scan a passport or drivers licence and take a selfie photo.

Airbnb’s Loyalty Scheme

Airbnb are always seeking to attract more hosts and customers to their service, and one way they do so is via their referral program. Under their referral program, when a friend of yours books a trip via Airbnb both of you receive £25 in travel credit. When hosts that you refer welcome their first traveller, both of you receive £55, so it’s well worth participating.

To join the referral scheme, all you need to do is enter your e-mail address into their web page and inform your friends about the credits on offer.

airbnb one less stranger

Sales at Airbnb

Airbnb often make discounts available to their customers via promo codes and money off deals. They don’t always make these obvious on their website, however. Instead, the best place to stay informed about their offers is at the Airbnb HotUKDeals listings, where the latest deals are posted as soon as they are announced.

Payment Methods Accepted by Airbnb

When you book a property on Airbnb, you can use the following payment methods: Visa, Visa Debit, MasterCard, American Express, Maestro and PayPal.

However, be aware that not all payment methods will be available in every country. It makes sense to check the list of accepted methods in your destination before you make a booking.

Cancelling Rooms and Seeking Refunds from Airbnb

Sometimes, even the most organised travellers have to change their plans and room cancellations can become unavoidable. Airbnb allow hosts to choose whether they want to be “Flexible”, “Moderate” or “Strict” about cancellations, so check your host before booking if you feel that your plans may change.

Flexible hosts allow cancellation with a full refund up to one day before your scheduled arrival (excepting cleaning fees). If you cancel less than 24 hours before arrival, you must pay for the first night’s accommodation.

Moderate hosts permit full refunds up to five days before arrival. If you cancel less than five days before arrival, your first night’s accommodation will not be refunded and you will be refunded 50% of the remaining costs.

Strict hosts permit 50% refunds until one week before arrival. There are also “Super strict 30 days” hosts who will allow 50% refunds up to 30 days before arrival, and “Super strict 60 days” who allow 50% refunds up to 60 days before arrival.

Some bookings are also for long term accommodation and are handled differently. If this applies to you, you can still cancel but you will be charged for the first month and must provide 30 days’ notice to end the lease.

The cancellation process for all hosts is the same. Go to the booking page of the property that you need to cancel and press the “Cancel” button.

Then go to your dashboard. Choose the “Your trips” section and then “Change or cancel”. Check that the trip in question has been cancelled, as no cancellations are confirmed until this section has been amended.

Airbnb’s Social Media Presence

Airbnb is an innovative, constantly evolving travel company, so it’s no surprise that it has a vibrant social media presence. Their channels are a good way to find out about featured destinations, new experiences and changes to the booking or hosting process and you can follow them here:

The Airbnb app is a great tool for everyone who intends to use the company’s services, and it’s particularly handy for people who are always on the move. With the app, you can create wish lists for destinations, choose accommodation, make and change bookings, contact hosts, find experiences and manage your travel itinerary, so it’s worth downloading. You can download it for Android devices from Google Play and for iOS devices from the iTunes Store.

Airbnb also have a handy FAQ section on their website which allows users to ask questions. It should be the easiest way to resolve basic queries about booking, finding hosts and cancellations.
