I didn't buy any, but most of the items in the sale section I bought scanned through the till at an even lower price, so perhaps these kits maybe even less than £1.99.

I've got too many models to build at the moment, but was tempted to buy at this price just for the paints, brush and glue!

I have an avid model builder in the family that would go nuts for these, like you say even for the paints etc at that price!

Did they have a selection of models?
Yes. Think there were about 5 different models. There was definitely Curtiss Tomahawk, North American Mustang IV, Spitfire, Cromwell Tank. I think there was also a Messerschmitt Bf109E-3 and Hawker Hurricane.

Banks are selling air fix models? That seems like an odd marketing ploy.

That's what I thought when I went to the ALDI store in Halifax

Don't usually build 1/72, and rarely use the paints and brushes in these sets, but for £1.99! Can't complain...

They are still £4.99 at Ramsbottom Lancs. Just been in!

I put it down as a local deal as I wasn't sure. But I did buy a few different items in the sale section that scanned at the till at less than the reduced price shown (Childrens books scanned at 19p and slipper sock/boots £1.99)
Might be worth taking them to the till and see what they actually scan at?

Is now the time to say I remember buying these from my local hardware shop in bags for 2 shilings (10p) each. Sure they didn't include paints and brushes, but what nine year old had time for painting models before they were lost in action in some re-enactment of WWII. Heavens there was barely time to glue them together whilst leaving one or two distinctive finger prints moulded into the fuselage by the polystyrene cement as they were impatiently turned from a sprue laden with parts, into the embodiment of the real thing. Half the transfers on the model and half stuck to fingers was the order of the day and perfectly matched the glue frosted cockpit canopy

Back then it seemed that everywhere sold these and I didn't know anyone my age who didn't make them.

Nowadays it seems that most spend their lives unopened in the lofts of collectors. Not the spirit of Airfix that I remember.

Cue music and fade to black.

I guess that's a Handley Page Halifax rather than a Hampden you're asking about?
Even at 1/72 scale the wingspan would be over 40cm. I can't remember all the models but would have noticed a box big enough to fit an Halifax bomber in (and would have snapped that up at £1.99):p

They're this price at Aldi Swadlincote too, for reference - suggests it's not a local deal and possibly a bit more national.
