Good idea to sign up to headforpoints (see post about it above) - been a recipient of his daily emails for just a year and already racked up tons of avios.
There are many other useful purposes one could use avios for besides flights and hotels:

Ferries (incl eurotunnel) - https://www.avios.com/gb/en_gb/spend/ferries

Eurostar - https://www.avios.com/gb/en_gb/spend/eurostar

Airport Lounges & Parking - https://www.avios.com/gb/en_gb/spend/airport-extras

The list could go on incl Top attractions, memberships, luxury train journeys, wine etc and this is just from Avios.com and then one could also spend avios on ba.com or Iberia's website.

Thanks all u have been super helpful. Is it worth while using them for hotels then?

Another poor value option Naz, purchasing a hotel through Quidco or Topcashback is always much better value than using Avios. However, that's only if you intend keeping them for flights sometime. After reading your initial post you say you have 100,000, and don't seem that 'into' the Avios programme. If that's the case, you don't intend to collect any more Avios and are looking rid of the ones you have, then by all means use them on a New York hotel - certainly not the cheapest place in the world to stay, and 100,000 Avios will get you a 3 or 4 night stay in a downtown 4 or 5 star hotel - could save you upwards of 4 or 500 quid!

Would like to use them for a New York trip....can someone help on that please

There's a cheaper way to use them for new York, but they would need some avios to be in a ba avios account and not in a avios.com account (you can transfer them free between avios and ba). For new York search Dusseldorf or Berlin (txl) to JFK on BA avios website, and it'll come up as 20000 avios and just £2 each way with Air Berlin. Then you have to either use a cheap flight to get to Dusseldorf or Berlin or use avios on either Flybe for 4500avios plus approx 25quid each way (can only be booked in avios.com) or fly BA from Heathrow for 4000/4500 avios and £17.50 each way.

Not good value Naz, on BA flights over 2,000 miles you have to pay the taxes, which on Transatlantic can cost around £350, more than the full price of a flight sometimes with another airline. Check out American Airlines, they're usually among the cheapest UK to USA... AND if you pay cash you collect MORE AVIOS as they're a BA partner!

Just to add Naz, if you're determined to use them for New York you may do better using them to upgrade your seat.

BA allow you to use Avios for upgrades if you have paid cash for your original ticket, but you can only upgrade one category - ie, World Traveller-World Traveller Plus, World Traveller Plus to Club World etc. The best option (if you have enough Avios and can afford World Traveller Plus) is to pay for that and upgrade to Club World. Sometimes this can cost as little a 20,000 Avios one-way. Great option, especially for the overnight (red eye) flight.

Worth ringing BA before paying for the WTP seats first though, just to check if they have upgrade availability in Club World

What's the point in spending £300 taxes and avios when you can get Norwegian for less than £300 ! Voted cold I'm afraid.
Exactly!

As you suggest, the taxes usually make the long haul flights not worthwhile. You can often find flights close to the cost of the taxes, sometimes even cheaper.

For long haul its only worthwhile using the points for Business Class/Upgarde an even then not always. Also if you're not flexible on travel dates, Avios provides an alternative when cheap flights aren't available. For example around School Hols/XMAS/Easter prices can get very expensive, but sometimes Avios still have availability.

Where I find Avios most useful is around Europe with their Reward Flights saver. Charges are fixed at £35 return with return flights costing as low as 8000 Avios when offers like these are on. You just have to be selective when you use Avios and when you pay normally for a flight.

They are giving this as a sweetener because they are upping the points cost for lots of people from April and dropping the number of points some can get from buying flights. Basically making avios a worse proposition for infrequent flyers. Check out the member are of their site for details.

I found the only best way to use avios for european flights(with BA) as if i remember you dont pay any extra taxes unlike worldwide flights.
You do pay charges, just a fixed amount depending on the zone you fly to.
So i just went back to see if any changes as it was a while ago since i used them.First i am talking about BA avios a single flight to paris 4500 avios+£17.50 so a return would be 9000+£35 so there are some charges but you can fly to berlin etc for only 9000+£35.

with avios its more worthwhile using them for higher classed seats for example.

I just priced up a 1st class trip in oct to NYC cash price with BA direct is £6745.
with avios its 120000miles+£513 tax

so at the mo if you purchase 35000 miles + 50% bonus each mile is costing you 1.1p (£575 for the miles).
if you were able to purchase enough miles to book with avios 120000*1.1p = £1320 + tax of £513 so £1833

I appreciate the fact you cant buy 120000 miles out right but i used this calculation to give you an idea that often avios can be cheaper as if you could take this route your £6745 1st class ticket to NYC would cost you £1833 via avios

Am I the only one who feels that Avios long haul flights aren't great value, even bearing in mind this offer? Standalone flights when on offer aren't far off the prices quoted here. Their European flights seem better value with no taxes. I guess long haul are good for upgrades to a higher class cabin.

Still a worthy post OP - This isn't a dig at you or your find.
Totally agree..the taxes are too high, plus so many miles therefore much better value short haul - even with the £35 fixed tax to pay

I got this through on my emails and have tried a few times over the course of today to try and look for flights for Easter but both the BA and Avios website keep crashing.....totally frustrating. Hoping they're also going to have some more long haul flight deals for the likes of Central/South America!
You might want to consider Air Europa to South America from Spain. We had one of the cheap holidaypirate deals last summer from Barcelona/Madrid/Lima/Madrid/London for approx £250 return. I'm not saying that's what the price is now but they did come up a few times last year, and the reason I'm posting this is that the price could be as cheap as the taxes etc BA charge you on the Avios. We flew BA from Gatwick to Barcelona for around £49 taxes baggage etc. Could'nt use Avios as only Heathrow was available, but we were able to use them for Peru's LAN internally for about 4500 a flight i think it was so flew Lima/Cusco etc. As for this deal typically i've missed it and i was only looking at the Avios site the other day :-(

Just to see how much we are ripped of here i just checked and it was 4500 points each and we paid £12.20 taxes total for the both us.
Avios points debited 9000
Payment Total GBP 12.20

I actually did the very same thing last Easter! I got a HolidayPirates Alitalia flight from Budapest to Tokyo (via rome) for £230 return, and flew to Budapest with BA. Haven't seen any cheap Lima deals which are usually on the go in a while....I guess the World Cup this year is really going to screw the prices. You didn't miss much in terms of this deal, the taxes once you've spent your Avios were as much as a flight with another cheaper carrier :) Cheers for the tip anyhow!

If you want to upgrade from World Traveller Plus to Business both ways (say to Vancouver) then it's a good use of Avios for a special trip. I like the idea of cheap jaunts around Europe though.

If you live in Aberdeen the Avios deals seem better as we are now included in Europe! We used to have to use more miles to get to Paris but now just the same as everyone in Uk

Agreed.

It depends where your flying from - Regional Airports score with the new system..

I'm in Aberdeen and the only place I could really get for a reasonable amount of airmiles was within the UK (750 airmiles). I could add another 500 Airmiles & that would then get me as far as Paris (so 1250 Airmiles).

With the new system however I can now get (& have booked) flights from Aberdeen to Nice for 9000 "Avios" (the equivelant of 900 Airmiles) plus £27.

So I've got flights from Aberdeen to Nice (via London) for myself, the wifie & 2 kids for 3600 Avios + £108.

Getting anywhere in Europe aint cheap from sunny Aberdeen so for me its a good deal.

I was collecting air miles for over 15 years and had a sizeable balance. i received a warning from airmiles about inactivity on my account and took steps to rectify, such that the account was kept open. The first i heard of avios taking over was on a bbc news article. i have never received any emails, post or other correspondence telling me what i needed to do to keep my milage balance. This morning i tried to check my airmiles balance on their website only to find out it had been shut and was redirected to avios website where my account wasnt recognised. I appear to have lost my entire balance of miles through no fault of my own. Absolutely disgraceful.

You want to save them all up, get a BA Amex and after a £10k spend you get a voucher for a free second ticket. Yes the taxes and fees are high but 150k miles, £850 and an Amex 241 will get two of you to Cape Town, LA, San Francisco in BA First Class. It really is a great way to travel and worth working towards it for special occassions.

Actually on second thoughts don't bother other wise there will be less availability for me ;)

spent all my airmiles last night ... no way am i going to pay taxes and stuff with avios, not needing to was the best thing about airmiles

I refer to the P.S. in my deal description, however, breaking the rule myself...

To be fair, unless you were happy to fly from London then flights were not the greatest way to spend your Airmiles anyway. This supplement has been removed with Avios, so yes you will have to pay taxes, but if you live in the north you can go just as far for the same number of miles from your regional airport.

Additionally, note that the change to Avios has no affect on:

* Hotel bookings
* Package holidays and cruises

* Other travel options like ferries and Eurostar TM
* Travel extras like car hire and travel insurance
* Days out and wine cases

Not bad, basically a free upgrade if 2 are travelling, as ticket price is double for Club rather than standard. But better than a kick in the teeth!
Looks like a pretty decent deal, but there's a couple of things to look out for:

As it's an Airmiles deal, you seeming can't book just with cash, it needs to be with redeemed airmiles or part miles part cash. (point 3.) which is a shame.

On point 6. The hotel accommodation seemingly has to be at the destination. This might be worth checking as the way these deals are somettime less good value is that the list of airmiles approved hotels is often quite expensive. One way round this used to be to book the one night accommodation through them for a cheaper airport hotel for the night before the flight and then fly first thing and stay wherever you want. Like I said it might be worth checking to see if you can still do that if the accommodation seems too expensive.

You can buy a prepaid Mastercard (cashplus) at many newsagents and there are literally dozens of them on the web, including many of those listed as best value on MSE. My experience is that prepaid Mastercards are anything but "less available".

I think he meant a less "in-use" card. If you survey 1000 people on the street, chances are that nobody will have a pre-paid mastercard on them - and are they really going to order one just to avoid fees ;)

Quite right ;)
