I've been looking for a double mattress for a while now and finally found what seems to be a great deal. A pocket sprung mattress with 800 springs and damask cover with tufted finish for only £132 delivered! (potentially around £120 if quidco tracks).

Originally £499.99+delivery, now it is reduced to £149.99. You need to add something from the furniture section to have min.£150 in your basket (I added a shoe rack for £4.99). Then apply 20% code FURNDISC (which ends 13/01/2015). Delivery is £8.95 and the total price I paid was £132.93, but if you add something cheaper as a second item, it would be less. There is 5% quidco too, which would make it the total at around £120 delivered :)

Other sizes available too. Also, there is a Silentnight Harding Pocket Comfort Double Mattress reduced from £599.99 to £199.99, which would make it £168.94 delivered (minus quidco) but delivery on this shows as within 34 days :/ But if somebody is willing to wait, then here is the link:

If somebody knows of a better deal for a pocket sprung mattress, please let me know as I could still cancel my order with Argos.
After reading about different types of mattresses, materials and hearing friends' feedback, I've decided to go with a pocket sprung mattress. it is also the best type of mattress according to which? and based on their customers' surveys.
ps homebargains also have good deals for mattresses but not as good as this one.

Low spec pocket mattress. Not very deep and minimal polyester layers but overall a very good price esp delivered price. Voted Hot.

Good deal:)

This price is about right. No way its a £500 mattress.
Its only 800 springs and its a no-turn mattress - so they have skimped and only properly padded one side ( this seriously reduces the life of the matttress).

There are much better specced pocket spring mattresses on Ebay cheaper than this , but of course they won't have a well-known brand name on them.
For exaple 1500 pocket springs and memory foam for £94.99 delivered next day ( double size) . click here
Personally i would go for a tufted model without memory foam though as i think foam does not make pocket sprung mattresses any better - but this is just my personal opinion.

thanks for suggestions. It is for a rented flat and I won't be able to take it with me when moving, so I wanted a good value for money, but for around £130-£140. I also found some deals on ebay, and short-listed to a few below. The seller sold over 8000 of those mattresses but strangely, although the prices and pictures are different, the spec and description is the same...

are they any better?

Definitely no way it was ever 500!

How are you supposed to know what a good mattress is if you don't get a branded / reviewed mattress? Like a needle in a hay stack surly. Or worse they are all **** ?

Looking for a comfy single mattress to replace the one which came with the bed from Homebase. Any suggestions - like the SilentNight Essentials Pocket 1000 spring mattress double which we normally use ?

I agree with you that it is not worth the RRP, and I also prefer to buy a pocket sprung mattress without a memory foam. The mattress you gave a link to is from the same seller as links in my previous comment. description is also the same, but price and a picture is different, which doesn't seem right.. Anyway, I am not after a well known brand - if the spec would be better, I would buy a different one, also from ebay. So any other suggestions are welcomed :)

I bought a mattress from Argos with a similar discount from an over inflated RRP. it was pretty useless and not as good as one I bought for half the price elsewhere!

over inflating RRPs should be banned in UK. It is just lie in your face and not fair. where is watchdog?

I have done a lot of research on mattress and have returned a pocket sprung mattress that i bought from argos after seeing it here on hit UK deals, it was for over 1000 pounds on sale for 170 Pounds (it's a fowley mattress) and had 1400 pocket springs with a lovely description.

based on my experience, i would strongly advise against buying a mattress from Argos. they are really poor quality. the only good thing is the price. pocket spring really means nothing as the springs themselves can be felt under the tuft, they are poorly built and the fillings are so thin. overall you get what you pay for. the original price is really a joke, just ignore it.
of course, if price is the only thing you are after, go for it.
also good thing about Argos is that you week have a guarantee.

can you provide a link? I didn't see any double pocket spring mattresses under even £250 on the John Lewis website..

That Julia mattress looks poor - i have seen these under £90 on Ebay. It has no tufting and visibly poor padding ( i would not be surprised if it is delivered rolled up ( ok for foam mattresses but not good for springs ).

The pillow top model i have saved in my own ebay list as it looks a very good buy ( i just don't like the colouring - but there are more neutral coloured pillow top pocket sprung matresses at around £150 ).
The pillow top model is properly tufted ( where they tie through from the bottom to the top of the mattress which keeps the fillings in place). The downside of a pillow top is you cannot turn it regularly to improve its lifespan as the pillow top is sewn to one side.

thanks for the advice.
I've been thinking about one of these two:
1500 Silk Pocket Spring Mattress
and
Luxury Sleepeezee Deep Pocketed Spring Sprung Double Size Medium Firm Mattress
The second is from a well known brand and I've found v.good reviews of their other models. However, the seller's website has very bad reviews on the trustpilot..
I'm not sure about the first one - I emailed the seller to ask for more details and the brand, so I could check reviews.

http://www.mattressman.co.uk/mattresses/breasley/titanium-deluxe-memory-double-mattress.aspx

I have had a Breasley memory foam mattress since 2009, I liked it so much that I bought one for every room. They are extremely comfortable and kind on your back. After much research and 45 minutes in dreams on the tempur sensations 22 mattress and the ensuring backache I have decided to stick to what I know and buy another one of these to replace my single for a double mattress.

but thanks for the input and suggestion

I didn't get the mattress and I can highly not recommend Argos home delivery. This week I had 2 automated calls from them regarding my order. I waited on the line for couple of minutes before I had to disconnect, and nobody answered. the other call disconnected me due to error with their system. So when I got a text today, I called them to check if everything is ok. They said yes, but when I double checked the delivery date for Monday, they said the earliest estimated delivery is in middle of February! so I cancelled the order and wrote a complaint. At least they could have emailed me that they can't deliver the order on a date they earlier confirmed. ps they said on the phone that they are allowed to do what they do and that they can't offer any voucher or anything for not fulfilling the order and for all the wasted time for waiting...

You have helped to find some good deals. When I get closer to my house moving date - will be buying one of these mattresses.

Mostly that one with 2000 pocket springs.
