These look huge!? But how big are they really. I'm in need of a good pair. Recently returned the Philips fidelio l1 as they were huge. Good sound, not enough bass.

Yep they are big! Definitely not portables put it that way! - they are reference class headphones so are designed for hearing audio as it's supposed to sound, i.e. for studio work. That's why I find it a little frustrating people vote it cold, as you'd struggle to find quality referenc headphones under £200.

If the Fidelio's didn't have enough bass, then these probably aren't for you.. I'd recommend the Audio Technica M50's, they'd be right up your street. I'm anxiously waiting for them to drop to the £100 mark...

EDIT: By the way, with headphones like these and the Fidelio L1, they really need to be driven by an amp to get the full potential from them. Something like the Fiio E10: http://www.fiio.com.cn/product/index.aspx?ID=37&MenuID=020301

I bought the K550 headphones in a recent Amazon Lightning deal (£130), and the reason I bought them was the fact that they're more or less unique among "reference quality" headphones in that they do not need an amp to sound their best. They are very easily driven (Sensitivity: 114dB SPL/V, Input impedance: 32 ohms), so that even the puniest built-in amp should have no problem driving them perfectly well. I use the K550 with a Sansa Clip+, no external amp, and they sound great. Try them without an amp before you complicate things with another box.

Massive bargain. I bought these a few months ago for £180, and I'm so glad I did. The fidelity these things offer is just divine. The thing I love best is that when you listen to these, you're hearing almost exactly what came out of the producer's mixing desk. You won't hear things as though they were in the room with you, because headphones don't tremble the bones like that, but they will sound brilliantly clear and detailed. If you don't have an active interest in music these aren't the headphones for you, but if you've any sort of love for hearing every detail of every track of every recording and are comfortable with the understanding that you're going to hear what the microphones hear rather than what the audience would hear, these are for you.

I bought the a couple of months ago and really hated the sound. The bass was so lacking it felt like it was playing in the next room. I didnt get this issue with the thr AKG Q701. The fit fir the k550 is also terrible, not enough clamping force and the space inside the fake leather is so small that it touched my ears. Considering they are so big this is unforgiveable!

To the guy who didnt like the Philips L1: The bass on those is huge, way more than the Audio Technica M50 and infinitely more than hete with the k550. Yes the bass of AKGs are lean and detailed but i could not live with it at all. Unlike the Beyerdynamic DT880 which is also considered to be good for studio use, that one i really like!

These are pure quality! They are big, but deliver clean output through out the frequency spectrum. Now down to £132!!

Finding it so hard to resist because they keep bringing it down. Creeped down £20 since I posted it!
It may even be worth getting it from Amazon directly just in case it's a glitch from Apple Gear. They keep automatically price matching, give or take £3

    EDIT: Now £131.32 @ Amazon

Which are best these or the GRADO's SR80i ?

It's like comparing chalk and cheese. These are closed back over-ears and the Grado's are open back on-ears. Entirely different sound on them due to the design. Grado's will almost definitely win for it's soundstage, but every other category it would go to these...

Heard good things about these but I would never buy headphones with pleather ear pads. I bought some from a different brand for around the same price and just had to get my money back for how sweaty and horrible they were to wear.

Depending on what you listen to you will either choose these or grados. While AKGs are known for full bodie sound, Grados are known to be very coloured in mids range. But why Sr125 when you can have Sr60? It is known the more you go up Grado scale the more money you lose on a pretty much same sound. The sound goes more piercing and thinner until up to Sr325.
