This is a heads up for all those who missed the AKG K551 headphones offer last Monday in amazons lightning deal, I know there was a lot of disappointed people out there.
Amazon are repeating this offer at 7pm tonight so bookmark this offer, currently £100 and recheck it at 7pm when this offer starts. I received a lightning deal email.
Both colours available.
I bought a set last week, really nice headphones, amazing sound, comfy excellent overall. I really can't fault them especially for the price I paid.
For those of you who have seen the reviews will know of the sound quality, the only real complaint addressed in the reviews tend to be the thickness of the plastic housing for the jack where they say that it would not fit if the phone/tablet was stored in a case. AKG has addressed the problem, the plastic housing has now got a step in it so it's narrow before getting wider.

Amazing price if its true... These are awesome for home use
#2
I bought these last week and I'm really pleased with them. However, I hope that the bass comes through a little more after the alleged 200 burn-in time.
#3
got mine from Germany on a similar price from amazon, so far so good, though personally still prefer the sennheiser hd598's
#4
How do theses compare to audio tecknica ATH-M50 ?
#5
What the hell. 100% claimed as soon as the deal went active. Seems a bit weird?
#6
They went out of stock in 1 second..... Really
#7
Yup, managed to get one, but only white model was on the deal.
#8
WTF?
#9
What a **** deal, they had 1 on offer, load of pish poster
#10
I couldn't even get on the waiting list. It really did go 100% instantly
#11
Is that what it was? 1 available at that price? Joke

They must have had 1 unit in stock for it. Bit of a joke. I'm on the waitlist but I guess there's no actual chance of me getting it.
#13
I got one.
#14
So they have only 2 on sale or, most likely, someone added 50 to the basked to sell on ebay for £99.99.

Guess what I'm doing next time. ;)
#15
I was on bang on 7pm Straight to 100%
I am gutted :-(
#16
Managed to get a set but was amazed when I went back to see how the claim rate was after only 10 seconds to find all had been grabbed. I reckon there was no more than 50 available.

Rated 5/5 at £230.

I got one. Effectively paying £35 for it with bespoke offer earlier today. Many thanks OP for the heads up! :D
#18
Well I guess it's back to the waiting game again. All I want is a set of these or the HD598'S :(

what do you mean with Bespoke offers? didn't see that one
#20
I knew this was a hot deal item and knew that it wouldn't last long,
I emailed a few friends telling them of this offer, so far 2 have called me to say they managed to get a set.
Not sure how many sets amazon had but even if they had a few hundred sets and they had demand from a few thousand customers then it's understandable why it sold out so quick.
I think it's a shame if someone did mass buy to sell on so denying others a chance to own a set.

Stumbled across these last week on the lightning deal. Deal was live for ages, I had time to ponder if I wanted them. Still not sure if I want them so they are still sat in the box unopened.
#22
I was thinking of HD598 too but they're open. K551 are closed. I have spare SB Audigy card to install in my PC at work so perfect for listening in the office.

Just wondering have you tried until checkout?

Anyway I have received the headphone today. the sound is very clear, but it's not good enough to be my daily driver. I have NAD VISO HP 50 and it's much better than the AKG. I'd be returning the AKG if I had paid the full price to be honest.

I know the AKG has got great reviews, but I guess I've been spoiled by the NAD's sound. It feels like the singer is singing right next to you. I'd definitely recommend the NAD over this AKG. Just my £0.02. :)

Shame they are £100 more

I had that experience with quite a few headphones but normally after running in for a while they sound better. Maybe after a couple of month's use you will think differently.

people say these aka k551 take about 200 hours to fully burn in

i beg to differ. imo burn in is hocus pocus.

i fell in love with the NAD's sound the first time I put it on, and still loving it. :)

I know, but worth every extra penny! :D

Also are you using an AMP or directly from a phone? AKG K550/K551 sound much better with an amp

My experience is running in headphones does make a difference and I'm not one to believe in most hifi advice. Whether running in makes a difference for all headphones or even most headphones is debatable but I definitely believe some headphones had inferior sound from new compared to later on when they had some use. Surely the internal material of some driver units will change over time and get more pliable unlike some other hifi advice it seems completely logical.

I'll see how it goes and maybe a couple months down the road I will start to like it. :) But I'm guessing it would be just my ears adjusting to it - surely there will some changes but they are infinitesimal. Quoting from the link above, which really makes sense to me:

Hertsens performed one more in-depth test, burning in a pair of Q701 earphones for 300 hours. He concluded that burn-in is a real phenomena--or, at least, that the headphone data showed some changes in sound over time. But they are very, very small changes. He writes:

"When people talk about night and day changes in headphones with break-in, they are exaggerating. This data clearly shows that the AKG Q701--a headphone widely believed to change markedly with break-in--does not change much over time.

My hiking boots break-in; my sneakers break-in, too. But my hiking boots aren't going to turn into sneakers over time."

Having said that, if one is content with the results of their burn in, I wish them happy days ahead. :)
