brilliant phones i have the K702 just go for them.

I had a pair of these a while back, don't expect them to sound good straight out of an ipod, definitely require an amp. Best for professional studio use or classical music as the reproduction is so detailed and airy. Best soundstsge in the business but if you just want to listen to R&B you'll be disappointed by their "lack of bass"
#5
Great pair of headphones that will compliment well with a cheap amp (no need to spend mega on a all singing all dancing tube amplifier) others have commented on the lack of bass but do not let that put off anyone as these things are mostly down to others hearing and tastes of sound, nice find op and for those who want them for an extra few pound cheaper a quick google found https://www.musicmatter.co.uk/akg-k701 @£145.00!

Fair find, but suspect I'd be more comfortable with Amazon (though to be fair, I know nothing of musicmatter.co.uk)

Just curious - why do these require a separate additional amp, when others (e.g. Bose) don't?

amazon also have the K702's for £149 here

regarded by many as a slight improvement over the K701
#9
How do these compare to the Denon AH-D2000 ? Similar quality?

With some headphones and most earphones the power needed to drive the coils that generate the sound is low enough that your player will be able to send the right amount of power to them, with bigger headphones with much higher sound stages and ranges the player will struggle to play at volume so it will be quieter and in some rare cases not sound as good without an amp.

its the same when you plug a guitar into a speaker, without the amp the volume will be much lower so you need the amp there to up the sound :)

I have these. Do not buy for commuting or outdoor public type use. They are open backed which means you can hear them clearly even if you are not wearing them. They are for private type use. Hard to explain ! Amazing sound when coupled with a dac amp, but these are not your get up and go type headphones.

would love to get them but i cant justify spending £150 on headphones.
hot price tho for the product itself
#13
So which headphones, in this price range, would be good for rock? I listen to all sorts (love licorice) but could not justify spending 150 big ones and not get a decent rock sound.

Owned several pairs over the years. Only negative I really had was comfort - at the time I had very short hair (typically a number 1 cut or similar) and the 'nobbly bits' on the underside of the headband used to press on my scalp and irritate me.

Otherwise though, excellent cans. Very good price. Less than they were new 6 or so years ago - I think mine were £169 back then, back when Sennheiser HD650s were also £169/£179. Now the Sennheisers are much more expensive.

Mind you the Sennheisers were probably better all rounders. AKGs really excelled in some areas but as pointed out above, they lacked (for me) impactful and warm bass. Don't get me wrong - bass was perfectly detailed, but the K701s were quite cold and analytical - great for extracting detail, but perhaps not what I would call a really engaging listen.

At this price I'd imagine you could pass them on without a loss if you didn't get on with them. Would pick up another set but have had my same DT990 custom made 600ohm cans for years and don't want to retire them, especially since they have lower resale value due to my name being engraved on them :D

As muddassarsardar says these are regularly available at this price or less (e.g. Thomann.de ). Good phones but not a deal.
#19
Good price, great phones. Definitely needs a head amp to get the best out of them. Won't sound particularly good directly from an ipod or similar. without the amp. The soundstaging is very good, midrange is the star. Bass is deep, but not flabby or overstated. Avoid if you're a bass junkie or like exaggerated bass.
#20
Pair these up with O2 amp from epiphany acoustics and you'll have a cracking setup.

Are these much better than the k612 pro's? Also the k701 has the weird headband.
#22
Don't think, just buy these. I have the Q702, superbly detailed and an amazing soundstage. As already stated, you'll need a headphone amp, you'll get away with the onboard amp on an ASUS Xonar soundcard.

If you want Beats-alike bass just walk away now. These provide some very accurate bass reproduction, but don't provide the (often) expected boost in that area that high street audio gear does.

They';re also VERY open and leak sound like a Mother Hubbard. Don't even bother trying to use them in public and forget about any recording work with them (that'll be some DT880s your after)

You will not get a more accurate set of cans at this price.

Beautiful sounding headphones, though useless without an amp, they really are for listening to music at home. Fantastic sounding detail, I got them cheaper on a misprice in an airport many years back, and never replaced for music, nor do I intend to.

Any chance you could repeat that in clear English please?

For anyone looking for a set of great closed back phones around the same money these are a great consideration.

Agree with all above posts re amping. Got K702's (would love to try the Q701's though!) and they are really hard to drive. First "At Home" set of cans... Really into my IEMs (200-300 bracket - not ventured to custom yet) but have a few amps. My Graham Slee Voyager (my "go to") sounded like a toy paired with these... Best amp (portable) I can recommend is the cheap chinese "C&C BH" off the famous auction site. Seriously does it justice. Great pairing! Separation and soundstage are amazing. Bass IS weak unamped (i.e. non existent) but they are analytical (not shrilly/fatiguing) in a good way. Pair the cans with what you are listening to. I LOVE these.. I know they say break in is non existent in this day and age, but it really helps (or I got used to it!). Very happy....

Is this Klingon? I couldn't find the translation on Google.

I'm not a fan of these headphones but that's definitely a better purchase.
The K702's have a detachable/replaceable cable.

I run them with an fiio e07k. Works well but they sound best on high definition audio, usual mp3 compressed stuff and these are wasted.

Thanks, but is this available any cheaper? Was about to order, but got put off by the p&p and the fact there is a newer model.

The newer model has the e/dac incorporated in but doesn't have the rechargeable battery inside due to the e/dac being fitted alongside the amp components so the new model isn't as portable if that helps.
