The Masterpiece Returns!

In 1988, the landmark Anime film Akira, by director Katsuhiro Otomo, defined the cutting edge of Anime around the world. By today's standards, Akira remains a landmark achievement in cel animation and retains the explosive impact of its highly detailed animation and its intensely violent saga of power and corruption.

Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda's motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. The military captures Tetsuo and conducts experiments on him that unleash his latent psychic ability, but when these new powers rage out of control, Tetsuo lashes out at the world that has oppressed him!

This should be loooads hotter. Tried getting this for a friend around Christmas and couldn't find it anywhere (he's ran away with mine now...) - at this price it's a steal. Even on auction sites it was going for ~£15.

According to CD-WOW this was released on 5th May - might just be a reprinting of the set in a new plastic case, but it's still a fantastic deal.

One of my favourite films of all time, I can't wait for a Bluray release!

I have this set already, but its a shame the only soundtrack that's in 5.1 is the really annoying recent dub with american accents.

Cool cheers for this, never managed to see it but at this price I think it's time I did :-)

True. I believe that there are only two DVD releases with 5.1 Japanese audio track - there's the Region 2 Japanese Edition released by Bandai (2 discs, has English track and subtitles), or the Region 1 Pioneer DTS Edition (1 disc, lacks some extra features). That's the option for cinephiles, but I doubt that either are available for this price. Or you could import the BluRay

Great film but due to it being a film they crammed all the comics story line into one. They even changed it a bit. The reason why you are puzzled is because you did not read the comic book.

Don't want to spoil it on here, but Wikipedia or IMDB can usually help out thar. The ending in the anime is heavily cut and mashed together out of the original manga (which itself, was open to interpretation).

Live-action remake in the works for 2011. Woo?

Maybe i need to read the comics though that did help some bishibashi cheers for the pointer.

I'd like a version with the old video English subtitles rather than this one which is taken from the English dub directly. The original translation subtitles had far more depth in the story than the one represented here.

If I remember correctly there's actually two different english subtitle tracks on this release - original and re-done. I'd imagine that the 4:3 version on the second disk contains that translation.

If that's true it's been sat on the shelf unloved far too long.

What you're referring to is called 'dubtitling' and is the bizarre practise where a company releases a foreign film in it's native language but then only offers subtitles for the terrible dub.

I own this but haven't watched it in a little while but I think it has subs for both. Feel like having an Anime weekend now, think i'll dig out all my Japanese movies.
