sounds ok spec for the money, does anyone know what this would be like for running kodi on?

I bought one at this price a couple of weeks ago, just for running Kodi, no complaints!

What a shame it has 1GB RAM - if it had 2GB and was a tenner more, it would be well worth it.

Is this best alternative to Hudl for the price since Tesco have stopped selling them?

No it's not. This means constant screen on time. I only got 5 hours of constant use from the Tesco Hudl.

Argos do a 7" version on Ebay, refurbished with a 12 warranty, for the same price. So this new, is not bad at all. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alba-7-Inch-8GB-Android-Tablet-Black-/351548275208

If only, I would snap one up! I have seen them going for £200 on eBay, one guy has a photo of dozens of them. Grrrr.

What's people's opinion on the alba brand, is it Argos own brand? Has anyone tried this tablet yet to see if it any good? I can't see any other 8in tablets in this price range and I'm wondering whether its worth a try, as it says its got a 2yr warranty with it at least. Thanks

Just bought one, can't go wrong for £50 thanks OP. ;)

I picked one up earlier for my daughter. Set it up and was impressed by the screen etc until I tried out the volume and sound quality on YouTube and sky go. It's truly awful sound. So quiet I could barely barely hear it even on max. So swiftly took it back paid a bit more and got the Lenovo tab 2 with dolby sound so much better. You truly get what you pay for.

Were Argos ok with you returning it even though you used it/?

So i bought be for my mother in law for xmas.. a couple of hours ago.

Am impressed with screen size next to Amazon Fire 7 that I bought last week. Wider but not deep as an iPad mini - but not much in it. Comes with a handful of apps that install during setup - some useful some not.

Seems very responsive - screen quality seemed good from lots of angles- again better I think than Fire 7.

Nice that volume and on/off is on right hand side. Don't like Fire 7 as on the top.

At least this is a full android tablet and not a bastardised one by Amazon - though I managed to load google play onto the Fire 7.

Alba has mini hdmi out - the Fire 7 does not. Android installed version 5.1. You can always cast if you have Chromecast around.

Alba comes with a Silicone rubbery type case - like you get with phones. Just a shame it is bright blue - would be nice if a different colour - perhaps black (I know it is not a colour). Not sure how easy it would be to find a suitable fitting case. If you delve down into settings and see the serial number you will see that it is actually an Archos tablet.

The build seems good - nice rubbery non finger print rear seems good - perhaps a we bit slippy on the grip without the case

So the issues,,,

1. No rear facing camera - however does have a fiont facing camera so ok for skype - did a test call - quality is ok for the price of the tablet.

2. Sound as mentioned above is the big issue - bbc iplayer / itv player were very quiet even on full. Like a previous comment, I may take it back and swap it for the lenova tab 2 - with 16gb ram. If you don't intend to listen to it direct and use headphones instead - then it is fine. Tested with headphones and plenty loud enough. Shame really as this is the main part that lets it down - but may not be an issue for some people.

3. Not being a snob, but having ALBA plastered straight over the back of it makes it look cheap - perhaps that is why they throw in the rubbery case.

4 The case being blue - and perhaps lack of proper fitting cases on eBay/amazon - although is a bonus to have it to hide the Alba logo!

5. A tad to big to fit into my suit pocket without stretching it and it feeling a bit bulky. Amazon Fire 7 fits a treat in my suit - and a lot lighter.

6. It states only 32gb expandable - not tried a 64gb micro sd card so can't comment

7. Battery life only 3.5 hours - well had it running for about an hour out of the box without charge - and the android battery saver / graph still showed I had 4 hours left... of course things do deteriorate over time.

So would I recommend it over an Amazon Fire 7?

If you have prime and you override/install google play services on Amazon Fire 7 - then the Fire 7 is good. Good for apps - however web browsing is better on the ALBA (Archos) as screen is much bigger.

If you are not worried about quality and loudness (or lack of) coming out of Alba speakers - then ALBA is a great buy for 50 quid. It comes with a two year guarantee - so for kids with good hearing it is pretty good - but probably not so great for the slightly older generation where the hearing ability may be less.

Will try and do a Youtube Video tomorrow to compare against Fire 7 and iPad mini... watch this space...

Plenty of free apps on the market to boost the sound from this

e.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=us.porrassoft.volumebooster

Alba... Lol reminds me of my mini HiFi when I was a teenager. It was cheap crep then too!

With regard to the speaker issue, I tried the VolumeBooster as mentioned- also tried Speaker+ but did not make a difference.

Have tried SpeakerBoost - this seems to work - just boosting it to 12% has made a lot of difference. Seems unobtrusive - no annoying ads yet

Thanks for the tip... popoyaya

I know what you mean... this does not feel like cheap tablet -however just has the ALBA badge on it unfortunately. The speaker fix for me results in a thumbs up.

Yes I asked via the chat service online first and the store didn't say anything either. I made it sound like I lt was a fault but really its just low quality. No issues at all.

None of these work they are just gimmicks. Tried before and are a waste of time.
