o2 Contract customers can unlock their phones for free by filling in this form to receive an unlock code via email roughly 24-48hrs after: https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset%20Unlocking%20Form

this .zip file contains the boot.img, system.img and recovery.img

I don't know if it a uk o2 phone or a foreign rom but it might help us fix broken phones and possibly create custom roms.

I have just noticed that Argos are offering this for £49.99 on the Orange network!

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5189029.htm
#802
T-Mobile too! http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5189036.htm

Will maybe be worth the extra tenner for those who can't get an unlock code, they seem impossible to get for this phone.
#803
Its £20 more when you include the compulsory £10 topup
#804
Ah, I didn't see that part, not really worth spending an extra £20 on a £39.99 phone. Hopefully unlocking will get easier over time as it's still relatively new.

If I order one can I ask my friend to email for an unlock code?

If your friend is on contract with O2 they can get you an unlock code for free.

or at t-mobile: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/pay-as-you-go/alcatel-one-touch-983-payg/ (possible topcashback £10.10)

This is a lot of phone for the £35 (assuming cashback) I paid. I got mine by next day delivery from O2 so any stock problems seem to have resolved themselves. My main number is on giffgaff so it's not an immediate problem for me but hopefully, the unlocking will be cracked by the boffins before long.
#808
you can get this from t mobile on an upgrade for £39.99 instore. get a 12 month tmobile internet sim with £10 credit off ebay for £20 odd quid. what a bargain.

Re unlocking:

This new upload on you tube promises a guide to unlocking the OT-983, but the link takes you to a "premium" content page and you need to give your email address, then are told you have "won" a prize and asked for your full name, postal address, phone number etc. I decided not to continue at this point as I had no idea whether I would actually get my phone unlocked (and at what cost and inconvenience) at the end of the process.
Just thought I'd warn people.

I have found just such a kind soul and am keeping my fingers crossed that it goes to plan. I'll still have to look out for another unlock source as my son has sweet-talked me into giving him my new phone so I'll have to get another. :D

EDIT: Here's a thought; I've got quite a bit of Orange credit from buying new handsets with £10 compulsory top-up. I transfer these top-ups to my Orange number which I keep in an emergency glovebox phone. If I got myself the Ot-983 instore from Orange, would I be able to pay the £20 unlock fee out of the (unwanted) credit I've built up?

3gkey/bb-box can also unlock this phone via usb now, can't generate unlock codes.

So there is polarbox, 3gbox/bb-box, gb-key and i think 1 other that can unlock this phone, all via a usb cable.

My son has begged it off me so my comments from here are limited. I ordered it last Tuesday, for delivery Thursday ( I could have got a Wednesday slot but Thursday was more convenient for me) and it arrived on schedule. First charge of the battery lasted 48 hours, including several hours heavy use while we set it up, installed apps, typed in all my son's contacts and then lost it to my husband who wanted to play Youtube vids on it. It's pretty nifty - certainly faster than hubby's San Fran 1. It feels quite solid and it's heavier than I expected. Next step is to set older son (the family tech boffin) to work rooting it and getting rid of the branding and bloatware. It doesn't seem to be hugely burdened with the latter (compared to an Orange handset, anyway), but daresay a few more tweaks ( and hopefully an unlock) will bring out the best in it. Very tempted to order another one for myself. :)

I don't understand all this :( So I don't just get a code sent to me? Do I need software or something?

Also is this phone better than the Tesco Huawei Y201 phone? I managed to get this for £50 (can take it back if I decide not to keep it) but it's locked again and has only 40mg internal storeage user available (cant move the preinstalled apps) and aparantly even if you get newly installed apps to SD card, the internal storage is used up a little bit too. Plus updating the preinstalled apps takes up more sace. It has 256mb RAM but no idea what this means in terms of apps tbh Thanks for any advice. The Y201 is ok but worried about space. Still not sure whether to get a better smart phone on contract but i'm a newbie to this so prob worth me getting a cheap one to start with

Urchin, to the best of my knowledge, these are hardware products (mostly in the form of dongles), that connect to your phone via pc and which allow you to perform an unlocking procedure (you can see the "how to" videos on YouTube). Unfortunately, the hardware tends to be quite expensive and not worth the investment for unlocking just one handset. That said, if there are enough people on this thread seeking an unlock for the OT-983, maybe there's an opportunity to do a group purchase, with the dongle being posted on after use? It would take a bit of trust, as just one dishonest participant would ruin the whole scheme. Unlocking party, anyone? :)

I bought one of these nearly 2 weeks ago. Ordered Saturday arrived Monday! No problems at all. Tracking number, text alerts etc brilliant!
I'm not really a smartphone expert but this is a fantastic phone. My daughters have got iPhones and whilst I will admit they are very good, the difference between £400 and £35 (with casback) is a no brainer. I'm on GiffGaff, so no unlock problems. Just the odd little things that don't quite work (i.e. connecting to a wireless proxy at work for internet), but this is more to do with Gingerbread's little deficiencies. (that problem can be overcome by using Opera Mobile - v10 worked for me).

I notice that folks on here talk about the source code and how to get it, well if you look on the main Alcatel site and then go to the bottom of any page including the OT 983 page, scroll right to the bottom you will see a link to sources files. This will take to a their file repository on Sourceforge. Sorry can't post link here as it was picked up file sharing.

If this is helpful someone could tell me why you would root a phone and how ( good link would do).

Great little phone - well impressed.

The link to root the phone is in the topic. People root them so that they have full control of the phone, they can delete language files and apps they don't want from the phone as there is only 512mb of rom storage. It also allows you to install custom roms such as cynogenmod.

I'm sure someone will figure out how to calculate unlock codes for this phone within a few weeks/months then this problem will go away.

The NCK dongle will likely add support within the next few weeks, those are £20-42.

Hi!
I have just taken possession of this phone. I wanted a cheap smartphone to run my astronomy app. The spec of the phone says it has a compass but I can't get it to work. The app should show you the night sky as you move it around. The screen does move up and down but is stuck on south.

I am rather puzzled. I downloaded a couple of compass apps and they do not work either. Has the phone not got a compass? Is it broken? Or do I need to switch it on somehow?

Can anyone who has one of these phones check it out and let me know. The astronomy app is called skeye.

Thankyou!

Scurvy dog, my phone was brand new straight out of the box. Not rooted, not anything! I called customer service who were as baffled as me. I have returned the phone this morning as faulty and another is on its way. I hope this one works...

Can I ask where you found the stuff you quoted above? I did try a google search but it didn't throw up anything.

Has anyone with this phone got a working compass? I really need to know!

Thanks!

Have rooted and deleted language packs and other apps. But internal memory still showing as only 160.00MB?
Have loaded 9 Apps all to SD card, but internal memory is down to 43MB
What an I doing wrong?

Someone also suggested using, the option within link2SD under 'more' - 'clean up dalvik cache' as this can clear out redundant stuff that is still lurking after uninstalls...
I don't have the option “more”

I didn't want to add to your workload, TR, but the unlock site I used finally admitted they didn't have the code. Not allowed to PM so would be grateful if you would please contact me so I can reply with IMEI number. Please advise name of charity you support so I can make a donation. Really appreciate your help.

Hey folks, just came across this thread while looking up phone reviews (as I fancy a cheap yet usable replacement myself, currently on a BB9520 ugh). I currently work for o2 as a customer service advisor (call centre) but thought I'd explain the unlocking of the phone. As long as it has been used on the o2 network, whether through PAYG or pay monthly then we can unlock it for you without any issue, as I said it has to have been used last on o2 network (which will obviously be the case as it's an o2 locked phone anyway) before we can do so though, also it is free, which to my knowledge is something some other networks charge for.

As for the stock issue, yeah that is annoying, not working in sales part myself but often receive same kind of calls so hopefully they can sort that at some point as having to explain another persons cock up, regardless of the job, is never too nice. So if you get through to customer service try to be nice as we'll do what we can to fix it ;)

Hello. I notice you work for O2. I was in the process of buying this phone last night but couldn't complete the purchase as the site would not accept payment. When I went back to the site this morning I found the price had gone up. Explained the situation to CS and chat line with same result, ie that the phone could now only be bought for £49.99. I was just wondering if there was any other approach available to still get the phone at the January sale price of £39.99. After all, it is still January. Any advice would be gartefully received.
