If you buy instore and give your pay as you go number (note: it has to be pay as you go and a major retailer i.e. vodafone, tmobile, orange...etc. If, like me you're on sim only contract or not on a "major" retailer i.e. your on tesco, asda etc) just get a payg number or spare sim card and ask for a "pay as you go upgrade"!

Alcatel 0T-980 - the first Android smartphone from Alcatel.

The affordable Alcatel OT-980 is a great introduction to Android smartphones. This feature-packed phone supports the Android operating system and comes with loads of great Google Services, including GMail™ and GTalk™, as well as one-touch access to Android Market™, where there are over 70,000 apps to download and discover.

Alcatel OT-980 is an easy-to-use slider phone with a vertical QWERTY keyboard that's great for firing off emails and instant messages. The bright 2.8 inch touch screen gives you access to a world of exciting apps and features, including speedy 3G internet, with built-in Google Search and HSPA for faster downloads/uploads. Make sure to invest in a screen protector, as the durable film will keep your phone's screen free from scratches, smudges and fingerprints.

Alcatel OT-980 comes with over 20 Android apps already pre-installed, from great games like Pinball and Mahjong 3D to Facebook™ and Twitdroyd™ (Twitter™ for Android), so your app collection is already off to a great start before you've even visited the Android Market™! Purchase a microSD memory card, up to 16GB, and you'll be able to keep lots more fun stuff on your mobile phone.

If you're looking for a budget smartphone that covers all the bases then the Alcatel OT-980 is well worth a look. With social networking shortcuts, GPS navigation services with Google Maps™ and a 2 Megapixel camera with video recorder, 0T-980 will keep you in touch with what matters most. Make sure to protect your new Alcatel phone with a protective mobile case, which will prevent it from getting damaged while it's in your pocket or bag.

"just get a payg number or spare sim card and ask for a "pay as you go upgrade"! "

- Are these locked or unlocked, if I want to go back to my non-major retailer i.e. tesco, asda etc?

You seriously can't compare a Alcatel with a blackberry :p

these are supposed to be unlocked. and tesco run on the back of 02 and asda run on vodafone. and these phones are supposed to be unlocked to all these networks.

Key handy point of difference between this and other Android entry-level phones is the physical keyboard that's included - other than that for the same price you could purchase the LG Optimus GT540 (from CPW as well) or dependent upon your luck the Orange San Francisco/ZTE Blade (some members have been able to get it less than £80.00p), but the latter will require to be unlocked to allow it to be used on other phone service provider networks.

True BUT if you consider the fact that it comes with a physical keyboard, it would balance it out as the pain with the resistive screen would be with the typing, which is bypassed via the keyboard...not bad but that's just my POV.

But IF your on a strict budget then this maybe a handset to consider...it's not a BlackBerry but it will get the job done by the look of it along with other Android based handsets (if there's a need for a smart phone).

Unless the OP updates this, you might want to consider setting up a new deal thread especially with this one being well over a month old.
