I had an Alcatel OT Max for years. I could not fault it other than on size (it could also run on 3 AAA batteries if its own battery died).

Eventually I traded it in for an Orange 3G Sanyo.

Bad move - as the Alcatels battery lasted longer, could make calls far better, worked better for texts, and could access the internet as well as the Orange 3G phone (neither could).

I still have an Alcatel 735i which I have had for about 4 years - and I just looked out to use it with my Blyk sim, and its still working fine.

So I would rate French mobile phones well above average.

I think you will find the very basic Nokias even better than the Alcatel.
