First post - hope it is useful for some. I have been looking at these Aldi PC deals for some years really and have yet to go for one. They always look quite good but my need for a new PC has never coincided with their appearance - until now.

Full spec is not available but:

Intel® Core?2 Duo Processor E4500 2.2 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB

Huge 2GB DDR2 memory
Speed rating 667MHz.

Gigantic S-ATA 500GB Hard Disk
8MB cache, super-fast 7200rpm. Stores up to 100,000 MP3 tracks (4MB) or 100,000 digital photos (4MB) or 225 hours of video (depending on quality of recording).

Windows Vista® Home Premium Operating System

NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600GS graphics card with HDMI
connection and Microsoft® DirectX 10 support for crystal clear graphics

Is this good value or can Dell and others compete?

If anyone needs a new or second computer, go for this one, a year ago with lesser specs it was nearly £800. Only downside with Aldi, is that each store has limited stock (sometimes only 10 per store), so you need to get there about 3 hours at least before they open to get one.

Aldi / Medion seem to have been on the back burner the last 2 years or so, none of the cutting edge pushing the limits systems that had people lining up outside at 6am for a bargain

This one seems like most of the recent offerings, summed up as "AVERAGE"

seems decent value to me....do aldi's not have a 3 year warranty as well?

its just the base though?

No 22" monitor as with most Dells..I guess I could pick up a 22" for £150 so all in £550 is not too bad a price for a reasonable spec machine..

It seems the extras are already added whereas the Dells push the price up significantly when you add such basic things as speakers etc...

Yes they do Niall

Not being funny here, cause I'm new to hot deals (and love it), but why is this getting a cold response with so many positive comments. Is it just people marking it without commenting.
Soz if I sound thick on this, but just wondered how this works.
#13
I've a Medion computer from Aldi (it's my second one, actually), and I thoroughly recommend them.

Never had anything go wrong with it, and good quality machine.

Voted HOT!

It seems a reasonable spec for the price, but medion will always receive a cool response due to there poor reputation. customer support over the years has been lacking to put it nicely.

the price for this spec is not great...until you add the 3 year warranty, remote control, card reader, DVB/Analog Tuner. I think all these extra's do make it a good deal.
The software bundle looks horrible to me though - loads of crapware you will rarely use.
And windows Vista? tends to make lots of peripherals you have like printers / scanners all redundant.

But why not get an imac for £800?
No need for virus software, comes with loads of great programs and no crapware.
holds its value like a mercedes. Sleek, Silent. Just takes a bit of getting used to at first.

I am using one right now, and the dell 'vista' machine beside it is dual booted into linux (ubuntu) acting as a satellite TV recorder.

Goodbye microsoft!!!

erm...imac £800, this £400 plus monitor I know, but not a fair comparison.

In response to the post, fair price for a fair spec, I was one of those out an hour before opening and second in queue a few years ago when the did the Gericom laptop...now that would have gone through the stratosphere on here! OP gets a warm vote from me.

If I got one of these and installed Ubuntu instead of Vista how well do you think it would work?
#18
Nothing wrong with vista anymore

Doesn't that knock two major planks out of the value proposition ?
- means you dont value the MS Vista licence at £50 within the £400 and it being an OEM edition isn't available legally to use on another PC
- means you have a PC that probably wouldn't be supported by Medion
#20
Has anyone tried running Leopard (mac) on one of these?

who told you that ? !!!! I have it but am still not entirely happy with it - and its slower than XP.

Aldi would have to offer a superb PC for me to even consider buying a Medion ever again. Their PCs are ok but if you have a problem........be warned. Their customer service is appalling IMO. Long queues, dissinterested staff with little technical knowledge.

As for Vista, not quite sure why it still gets all the knocks. Got it on 2 machines I use for 18 hours a day and never had a single issue with it. I find it logical to use and any peripherals Ive ever thrown at it have worked first time. Maybe Im just lucky.
