Is that 6.5kg of ham, or does the weight include the stand? I'm expecting the weight to be just the meat/bone but worth asking!

I'm pretty sure Lidl are doing something very similar for £39.99, and it's in store now...

At this price it can't be anything other than a standard jamón. Think of it like a chicken: there's your battery chicken, a free-range, a corn-fed and organic. This is a battery jamón.

I'll feed you, not ham though!

    Asda Serrano Ham is £20/kg.

This will last up to 6 months, so someone who likes ham (me!) or a family would easily eat that.

Yep. That is where i found it this morning. Does anyone know if Lidl hams are in all their stores? I have never ever been in a LIdl - possibly an Aldi but not sure. Exciting days ahead when i find a store.

Makro have had these for years - must have a look at the price next time I'm down there! They sell it complete with the stand too.

This is a hot deal though - and if cheaper than the makro one then I may even buy one :)

    What quality?

If you go into any supermarket and look on their deli you will see how much this kind of ham is..usually over £2 per 100gms

Example...£2.10 for 70gms or 3 packs for £5.That admitdly is sliced and boneless, but this ham on the bone will be much nicer(and much cheaper)

Its 77p p/100g, or about £1.80 for 250g which is a 'normal' size pack of cured ham. Depending on quality obviously, but that size pack normally retails in Sainsburys etc. at £2.50-£3.00. Well, it is when I buy it anyway. So yes. this represents a saving on those prices, anything up to 40%, but the pack has convenience (pre-sliced) and only having the amount you want rather than 'oh my God, its ham sandwiches again' on its side.

Thought I would warn people...basically the leg of pork is rubbed with salt, sugar and usually salt petre, left in the cure for a few days and then just hung up to 'dry cure' for anything up to 36 months then sliced and eaten.

Have a look here to see how much you can pay for a leg of ham...

if you have never had it before, you would be better off trying to get your hands on a bit first, coz when I had some in spain it was absolutely foul. each to his own though.
    dorian_gray
I am sorry to ask this but how do you eat this? Do you just cut the slice and simply consume with the bread? I've never tried and wanted to know.
    eggman
Eat it on its own - when you start you won't be able to stop. but make sure it is very thinly sliced - or as the add says with olives or any med type salad.

It can even travel around with you at Christmas when visiting - makes a gr8 starter with fruits etc. Might even buy two now as they keep so long. Mmmmmm greedy guts I am. One from Lidl; and one, with the stand from Aldi etc to hang it on.

I know about Jamons, I lived in Spain for 10 years and have bought them over here too, you can get some right duffers (as a Groupon deal if I remember correctly), but you are saying this quality of ham is good for the price, or better than Sainsburys (which I like) but I cannot see anywhere an suggestion of what quality it is. It does not even say how long it is cured for.
    eggman
Jamon Serrano is dry, salty air-cured ham from Spain. and is part of the Spanish diet, no matter which region of the country. Although it is available sliced and sealed in small packages, whole Spanish hams are available in the USA and around the world. If there are ham lovers in your house, buying packages of sliced ham is expensive, so you may wish to consider purchasing a whole leg. Before grabbing the nearest knife to cut into it, stop! Knowing the parts of a Spanish Serrano ham is very important to cut it correctly.

Whole Serrano hams are sold bone-in or boneless. Both have the same distinctive parts:

La Maza - the round side of the ham.
La Babilla - the side opposite the maza. This is the straighter or flatter side of the ham. It is sometimes called the contramaza.
La Punta is the wide end of the ham, where it would join the hip of the pig. Normally, the ham is placed in a holder called a jamonero, and the ham rests on la punta.
La Pezuña - the hoof. Most whole hams sold in Spain and other European countries include the hoof. In accordance with USDA regulations, Serrano hams sold in the USA have the hoof or pezuña removed.
Although there are more Spanish names for each small "sub-part" of a ham, the four parts listed above are the only ones needed to slice a ham.

In order to cut the ham (bone-in or boneless), it is placed in a jamonera, which is a special holder that secures the ham at an angle resting on the punta and the hoof end angled up. This makes the ham easier to slice.

If the ham will be consumed in 3 days or less, cut the maza side first. Most people do not eat the whole ham in 3 days or less. Therefore, they start by cutting the babilla side.

More importantly, the 77p per 100g includes a bloody big bone and quite a lot of fat.

and some serving/cooking ideas Cooking with Spanish ham

    Storing Serrano ham
Storing your serrano ham is simple. When you buy your Serrano ham it will be covered in rind and waxed. There will be a fecha de caducidad (use by date) on it. You can keep it just like this at cool room temperature or in a fridge, usually for up to that date. Once you’ve opened up the ham and started cutting it is best to eat it within two to three months.
It is important to cover any exposed areas to keep it fresh and prevent it from drying out. The best way to do this is to keep the strips of rind and fat that you cut off to start with and re-cover the exposed meat. Even better would be to rub some olive oil over the exposed meat first and then cover. If you can’t use the rind then a cloth or some cling-film will do the job.
Once opened serrano hams should never be kept in the refrigerator, even after carving has begun. If you do have to store your ham in the refrigerator you must remove it and let it acclimatise for several hours before serving.
For the best gastromomic experience, always store and serve your ham at room temperature. Keep your ham somewhere cool, dry and airy but, most of all, somewhere accessible! You should do as the Spanish do and take your little bits of heaven as the fancy takes you.
