Excellent bit of kit, should fit inside most mess tins too which is a bonus when space is limited. Got me through many a festival, and a fair few trips to the welsh mountains too.

can you burn wood in this?

can you burn wood in this?

It's about 3 inches by 4 inches by an inch, yes you can but why when you'd not get enough wood in to actually be of use?

Oh, and hot, as this is a pretty good piece of kit for a camping or an emergency when there are no other ways to heat things up.

    no longy,its solid fuel

It's highly flammable fuel blocks so you wouldn't be able to take it on a flight, the sniffer dogs might get a bit suspicious too. Not a bad piece of kit, but to be more comfortable, just buy a cheap gas stove or even better, get a jetboil

i second what the above poster says, ask any military types

The stove is fine, but buy some different fuel blocks.

They're a pig to light if it's anything but a still day.

I have been in the CCF for a while now, and during each exercise we are issued these Hexi stoves.
They are good in the fact that they are reliable but in all honesty:

    - they stink out your kit in your bag,
    - take an age to light,
    - take an age to boil water,
    - cover you mess tins/ pans in horrible carbon deposits.

If you want something proper I recommend the Campinggaz gas stoves. They're very reliable, gas lasts about a week of daily use and the gas can be disconnected for easy travel.

Agree with all this, but they are still best for hiking due to their size/weight. I also have a meths burner made from the bottom of a coke can that weighs about 25g which is great, but then you need to carry a bottle of meths and fashion a pot rest & wind break at each stop.

If weight isn't an issue then the portable hobs are fine, even better I used a Cadac mini chef last weekend which worked brilliantly.

They are a definite NO for hand baggage or hold/checked in luggage

Ha, I remember using one of those about 28 years ago!
They did a good job of cooking with a small pot.

you cant take gas stoves to festivals. only solid fuel.
so this deal is hot in the festival season.

and it took me about 3-4 minutes to boil water for the 3 cups of tea ;)

1 fuel tablet is usually more than enough for a tin of food, so you only need one of these for a festival.

You can't beat a Coleman petrol stove for speed and power. Boils 1L of water in about 3 minutes.

They say not to do that anymore as Hexi is poisonous. That's why in the army it has a seperate slot inside the utility pouch I think.
