has it been confirmed for HD-DVD? if so, that's great news!!

It was posted at £14.99 a few days ago - HMV + 10% QuidCo. With QuidCo and possible student discounts you can get when buying from HMV, I don't see why this was posted again when the prices are so close together.

Excellent set, btw. I got mine AGES ago for £16.99 from Play.

I LOVE these films - what I love most is that throughout most of the first three is this kind of distant wind noise that really cranks up the atmosphere, makes you feel like you're far away in space, and no ones coming to the rescue. In Aliens you can hear it quite consciously through most of the film. The music as well - so atmospheric. Bummer about resurrection being so shat.

The extras are amazing (for once). Check out Bob Burns private museum of Alien memorabilia - he built a set to entertain his mates, the studio learned about it, then started delivering truckloads of original props and sets to his house, so he ended up turning it into a museum!

I saw the first one went it first came out and have always thought it was excellent. Never been quite into the sequels with the jungle camouflaged space marines with attitude problems.
#7
That's amazing, I already have these on DVD now and I think like most of you, I'm waiting for the HDDVD/Blu-ray.
#8
d'oh, just been looking into it a bit more and it appears the Alien films are gonna be Blu-Ray as they are Fox films.....d'oh....couldnt we have the Alien films instead of Transformers? :-D
#9
Yay, I have a blu-ray player.

They'll be on my list to Santa this year.

£14.99 @ HMV + 10% Quidco (10% cashback is not 'guaranteed' btw). £13.99 @ Virgin + 10% guaranteed discount for Virgin card holders makes this £12.60. Hence the post :)
#11
Unless the student discount HMV offer has ended, 10% QuidCo (all my HMV transactions have tracked) + 10% student discount.

20% off £14.99 = £2.99
£14.99 - £2.99 = £12.00

maybe some people are not students and dont have a student card?

you get 10% discount using a virgin credit card, credit cards are more freely available

Maybe some people don't have a Virgin CC? :/

I'm sure there are plenty of students who visit here and buy DVD's, and I'm also pretty sure there are more students in the UK than there is people with Virgin credit cards.

Btw, since Virgin don't seem to do QuidCo, it actually works out cheaper buying from HMV for students.

Good deal - Hot.

Reckon that pretty much covers it...
NOT EVERYONE uses Quidco
NOT EVERYONE is a student
NOT EVERYONE has a Virgin CC (& orders HAVE been overturned before now..)

So maybe the best thing would have been for people to point these 'possibilities' out & leave it at that or start your own thread saying how this would be cheaper 'your way' & let the 'voters' decide??!?
.....for people JUST looking for the cheapest 'straight' price, this is it.
#16
I hate to admit it, Mr. Charlie, but you're right. I'll leave this thread since I already have the set.

Amazing Deal, I've had mine for a couple of years now, well worth it,

I went with the hmv deal as I'm not a student and don't have a virgin credit card but do use quidco. So about £13.50 which is great value.

getting a bit peeved off. the 10% off for virgin money card holders hasnt been working for a while and i cant get to a store :(

there's a boat load of stuff i want and from virgin just now but cant bring myself to buy when i know 10% should be available.

anyone have any info on what the problem is and when the discount is likely to be back?

thanks.

Out of the frying pan and into the blast furnace I go...

240-odd degrees (well over twice the 'heat' of very similar deal for this box-set from the other week) when the next best price is only 1 quid more..??

Granted it's great value for money but so is the HMV one and I seem to remember realfriendlyman copping flack for posting game deals when next best prices were not that much higher (some were, some weren't.) So why did he get hassle and edi not?

No offence to OP and of course I'm not suggesting anyone badmouth this deal or the OP but I can't help thinking people (not all) react differently to moderators, which is a shame but by no means limited to HUKD forums.
#23
I believe that if you find something the cheapest you should have a right to post it. After all I have just bought this after seeing it listed. £1 is all the difference in my case. Thanks OP - as this is truly the cheapest for someone who doesnt own a card, isnt a student etc etc I found it HOT!

Maybe it has something to do with Virgin Megastores no longer being part of the Virgin group:whistling:

i dont understand you!!

10% discount is still available instore using your Virgin credit card (according to their website) but not currently online and virgin.com still links to the stores along with all their other ventures.

I don't see whats not to understand? Sir Dick sold VMS to a management buyout last month. They're currently in the 'rebranding' phase (to Zavvi) and when thats finished VMS as an entity will no longer exist, so no discount instore either. I find it highly unlikely (though not impossible) that Virgin money will subsidise/incentivise spending at an outlet they don't have a financial interest in. But then EGG does so who knows....

Irrespective of who posted it, and diversions such as Student or CC discounts, a pound off the previous best price is a pound off, which makes it a better deal, no matter how you look at it. So it deserves the higher temp, as that's what this site is all about!

But it doesn't deserve the temp it's got for £1 off a deal that was only posted a couple of days previously. The vast majority of voters on here seem unable to do research for themselves, instead voting hot and cold based on who posts deals and what they think of the item.

I've seen plenty of examples of stuff certain mods post/popular items getting voted insanely hot for no real reason.

In truth this box set has fluctuated up & down from around the £15-20 mark from it's massively overpriced original RRP & I personally get a little bored of seeing it posted over & over again by a quid difference here or there BUT if the HMV offer has been posted & this is cheaper then there's no reason why this post shouldn't exist is there??!?
(Maybe this is a fair temp for the price & the 'package' of films you get & the other post is unduly 'cold'??!?)

As for voting according to the poster being a Mod what would people hope to gain or are you saying the people voting are really so ignorant that they think a deal is better because a Mod has posted?

That's fair enough, I'm not disagreeing with you. If the ethos behind this site is post the cheapest deal regardless of what the next cheapest price is then I'll be posting deals all day long :)

I just thought it funny (not ha ha funny) that people get slated for posting a deal when the item is priced similar somewhere else yet other times the temperature of the deal goes through the roof. As I said both Virgin and HMV offer great value for money on this item.

Calm down my friend, I'm not saying it's not a better deal, just commenting on how strange the difference between temperature and how other people have even been flamed for posting similar deals.

Yes indeed all deals should get voted on fairly irrespective of who posted them. To my eyes that isn't always the case. It's not the fault of the people posting the deals though.

As I've said already, if anything that is a £1 cheaper than next best thing is worth 240 degrees of temp then I'll start posting deals all day long by just looking at find-dvd or something :-D

The temperature system isn't fair - We all know that. Most of the UK population are not smart people, most being simple minded, and that's sadly shown on a site as big as this.

Example:
I post 50 First Dates for £2.99 and City of God for £3.99. Both go above 100 temp.

Later on, I post many more popular DVD's with the same difference in prices, checking beforehand to see if they've been posted. These DVD's go between cold to just above.

--------

It all depends on who's on and what the people who are on like. It would be wonderful if heat ratings represented the difference in price equally in all topics, but it doesn't work like that due to the users on here. It's hugely frustrating for people who bother looking for deals and sharing them.

This place would work better if people people were forced to comment on cold votes - I'd love to see what some of them have to say!

/end rant

Is it rude to say that? I also have observed this:giggle:

Strange way to get your point across by deriding the vast majority of the UK populace.

It takes quite a smart person to have the wits about them to make the extra effort to use a site like this. Perhaps you just associate too much with people that aren't too smart and are tarring every one with the same brush on the basis of that.

Could you please reveal your statistics for arriving at that conclusion?

Statistics mean nothing, as anybody with intelligence would know. If you want proof, just read the posts on here regularly and see the stupid questions that get asked. Questions that typically already have the answer in the OP. Lack of intelligence or laziness? I don't have that answer, so I put it down to lack of intelligence:thumbsup:
