Thanks for reposting Mecoconuts :)

I got my free modem last month - I also had a Motorolla SB4100.

Although as for catering for the 20mb upgrade .... ROFL .... Thanks to those clever people at VirginMedia, I'm currently getting approx 8.5mb speeds at best.

Waste of time phoning their support people, especially at 25p per minute, as I've been experiencing these shocking speeds (even down to 350kb/sec) for past 2-3 months. I spent too much time already talking to them and getting nowhere so I'm damned if I'm going to pay 25p per minute for the priviledge. It's a good job I'm on a reduced £37 per month for XLBB XLTV and Telephone otherwise I'd be looking elsewhere.

Come back Telewest - After 5 years of reliable happy full speed service I've now been dumped on by Richard Branson.. grrr...

Wow I havent heard of SB4100 for ages.
Used to work for Telewest Broadband and back then the fastest was 8MB.

Your lucky you dont have the SB3100 which many many people still have! That came out about 10 years ago.

Edit: I dont work there no more! It was really ****....

What was the model of the new modem they gave you ?

I'm getting approx. 8.5mb with my SB4100 at the moment. But it sounds like your saying a modem upgrade is going to make no difference. :?

Thanks...I've got XL broadband and do need a new modem!
#6
Only got mine recently and seems to be fast service - so think I am ok
#7
I have XL Broadband. Was with NTL I get 20 meg speed except between 4 - 12 where it can drop to 8 meg although its normally 12 -14 speed in this time
#8
Is it just xl customers they are upgrading? I am on 2mb. I thought they upgrade everyone when they do upgrades?
#9
2 is meant to go to 4
4 is meant to go to 10
10 is meant to go to 20

so i was led to believe.!

Thanks for the tip buddy.

Just followed the link you posted and then phoned 150 to get my account number. Was then told i had the wrong modem and had my account credited with £20.00 and a new modem on its way.

Cheers

10 to 20 was the first rollout

the others will be doubled over the rest of the year last i heard

Virgin have killed off Telewest Blueyonder. My 10MB service used to be fantastic until Branson got a hold of it.

My node is completely oversubscribed due to their silly cheap offers and at peak times I'm lucky if I can get 1.5MB, and I'm not even being capped.

Robbing us blind.

They replaced my SB4100 with a WebSTAR EPC2100R2 when I went to the XL package. Seems to tick along at 12-15mb, never had full 20mb. Still pretty nippy tho - £45 XLTV/LPhone/XLBB

I get about 17mb with a EPC2100 HW 2.1. (scientific atlanta) So it's not the modem that's holding you back Janeyjugs
#15
i just went on that url and chose XL then chose sb4100 which is the modem i have, and it said i dont need an upgrade and the modem will deliver the new speed perfectly, but you guys say you had a free modem upgrade with the sb4100 and XL? strange, i'll have to phone them cause im getting rubbish speeds, around 5mb
#16
i pay for 2mbit but recieve 10mbit (they forgot to cancel my trial)

dont know if i should request this, might make me lost my speeed
#17
Nice one i've needed one for ages as I've been on 20MB for ages but never get the 20MB speeds.
#18
i went from sb4100 to scientific atlanta epc2100r2
#19
and guys did you have to phone them to register your new modem and mac number or not ?

I'm not on Virgin but I thought it was interesting reading all these comments as I used to be on NTL and receive a full 4Mb 24/7.

The main reason you people are not receiving a full 20Mb line is because of (as already mentioned) an oversubscribed area and peak times. Check your speeds around 5PM and then again (if you can) at 1AM - you'll be receiving a lot better speeds at 1AM due to less people using their modems at this time.

Either way, theres not much you can do about it.

Oh, speed test websites are not the best way to check your overall speed either - try downloading something (big) from the Microsoft.com website with more than 1 thread (using FlashGET for example).

no the upgrade was only for XL customers

BTW I had my new modem and once the upgrade had gone through the modem has to be re-booted to get full speed. Some kind of firmware / software upgrade is required to get the upgraded speed and that happens automatically when you reboot (power down - power back up 30 secs later)

Wrong! I am on the L service and mine jumped to 10mb from 4mb about 3 weeks ago (about the same time I got a new modem)and jumped to 20mb about 2 days ago. Very odd but I'm not complaining :)

im sure the sb4100 is capable of 30meg speeds as it says in the manual if you can find one knocking about...they probably want rid of them as you can easily modify the firmware to run at 20meg even though your paying for a cheaper services such as medium or whatever it is.

Try re-booting your modem.

i am also in Birmingham and have the same modem

I get 20meg first thing in the morning and then it drops to 15ish during the day. sometimes down to 10-12 during peak times.

Check the VM BB website and M=2Mb, L=4Mb and XL=20Mb(was10Mb)

Sounds like they have upgraded you to Xl, better check you are not paying for XL!

The Terayon TJ210 is not suitable for 20mb. They should just send you a new one. No need for an engineer to visit.

I had an NTL Home modem which disconnected every so often but they wouldnt replace it so I pretended I had a Terayon via their online modem test and they said I needed a replacement so sent me a shiny new VM one which gets 20MB D/L speeds despite me only paying for 4MB ;-)

I didnt even need to call them - all done online. Just wish I'd done it a year earlier when my disconnect problems started :x

My region has yet to have the 20mb speed. Its been 3 months now since they promised it. Though im never gonna get it. Im my place the speeds are reliable im hitting 11mb consistently so no complaining there. Still waiting for the 20mb though.

What do you pay for the 10mb BB?

I changed mine last year when they went up to 10MB as the modem could not handle that, It handles 20MB with no problems at all.

So let me get this straight, there is a way of getting 20MB for free by having a certain modem?

I currently have a Motorola 5100/5101E, what modem would I need to buy/get free by claiming my one is broken to get speeds of 20MB for free?

I really want to upgrade to XL service (currently on M) but my Dad won't let me do it, despite me paying for the net already, he says I can't afford it! :x

All i did was this:-

go to http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/existingcustomers/faster/current_service.html

then state you have XL service and a Teryon Modem. They will say this is not 20MB capable and will send you a new VM one. When that arrives plug it in and send the old one back. My speeds went up from 4MB to 10MB instantly and within the last week went up to 20MB. I still pay the L price (4MB).
#38
virgin traffic shaping as they call it reduces your speed to some way low speed my 20meg ends up 5meg no notice they would be doing this and still saying its unlimited which its not.

Ive spoke to them over the phone and got £25 off for life £12.50 off broadband and the same off my tv than means 20meg for £25 the guy explained that you have to download 3gig in 21minutes for the cap to apply then you have it till midnight once its activated.

I pay £28 a month for unlimited 20MB BB and Unlimited 24/7 phone package.

Just phone up and complain and they usually sort you out a deal if you threaten to leave, been paying this price for over a year now and so have many many many other people.

I have been with telewest/ Virgin Broadband for around 8 years now. I have been paying £25 per month for broadband sicnce the too and this is the speed i'm getting:
