The premier 21 account seems great for a teenager, has 6% aer, but the bad thing is:
Earn 6.00% AER (fixed for one year) on balances up to £1,000. After one year the rate goes back to Bank of England base rate less 1%. Balances over £1,000 earn 0.10% AER (variable).

one question, they are part of the satander group, does that mean I could deposit cash with in an abbey branch?
#2
mumbojumbo
What a con! They're currently only paying 0.80% on their cash ISAs.

You have to keep an eye on the rates :x

Some quite good accounts here (for the under 20s and over 50s)
Worth a look

Yes they are part of santander but operate on a totally seperate banking license to Abbey so no you cannot do anything in an Abbey Branch for an A&L account.

Bradford & Bingley savings are also part of Santander and can be managed via abbey branches http://www.abbeyatbradfordandbingley.co.uk/

This current account isnt great for anyone who has a salary of over £1000 as you only get 0.1% interest on anything over £1000 hence depending on individual circumstances current accounts like Coventry Building Society can be better

I've had an Alliance and Leicester current acount for about 5 years.....and have NEVER recieved a penny interest...

Are CURRENT accounts paying more than savings now and if so how come?

Would you put, say, £30k in a savings account? Is it still as safe?
#6
i cant find premiere 21 account for teenagers think it is an error

re curnt acct yes its still safe to 50k

The UK Government guarantee up to £50k now so you should be safe

Re current accounts, you normally have to pay "x" amount in monthly to qualify for the rates and there are lots of other t's and c's too, such as a ceiling on deposits etc. Well worth checking the small print - if you go overdrawn regularly they'll give you no interest and probably rip your ears off in fees :?

its there, I'm considering switching myself, but I won't get the £100

Its good for the first year but don't expect to get any worthwhile interest beyond year 1 for either a current account or any savings accounts
#11
just for under 21s though sucks a bit for most of us.
#12
Would be OK if there was an A&L anywhere near me, nearest is over 20 miles away, LOL

The Post Office is still tied in with Alliance & Leicester and for most things you can do in a A & L branch you can also do in a Post Office. You just have longer queues :-)[/COLOR]

Of course , it is the same trick again, the same mentality that caused the credit bust. Sales execs and bosses are paid massive bonuses on new business and market share. So they pocket £1m bonus and then offer 0.80% to existing peasants. So your money goes to their pocket as bonus.

From someone who swapped using this service - be very aware they are not helpful during the switch over it took over a month doing the 'simple' switch over, i had to keep chasing them after some of my dd's were not setup i was told they could not do any more to help me as all they do is request it from your current bank if they done reply, then its your problem.

yes i got the cash back and the quidco, i would say the online banking is good though much better than the shody abbey..even though they are one in the same now.

just be aware it is not as simple as they say.

its people like you staying with them that makes them pay such derisory rates. Same with utility companies.

Thanks, didn't know that.. but I'm guessing I'd still have to travel the 20+ miles to open the account in the first place.

I have just closed all my accounts with Alliance & Leicester after 2 years with them.
They NEVER pay the interest they say they going to - Its start at the full rate for the month then they reduce the rate without telling you and by the end of the year you find out that you money has made very little,
PS:-customer service is terrible.
Still waiting for my £50 Quidco - Its tracked but still not been paid.since April 07.
Have not voted cold because if Quidco goes through its a good deal - but you wont get paid 6% for long - read the small print - its variable and in A&L case means about 2 months if you lucky.
#21
I agree have had gut full A & L recently, customer service terrible, you do not get rates think you're gonna get, then realise lot later new promotional acct NEW CUSTOMERS ONLY - who will get ie better savings rate. They just do not seem to value their loyal customer base & I have threatened to take my business elsewhere now just checking the market out.

This deal is incorrect unless I'm missing something.

From what I can see on the site, if you switch to a PREMIER account you get £100. BUT the Premier Account only pays 0.5% interest up to £2,500 and 0.1% after that.

If you switch to a PREMIER DIRECT account, THEN you get 6% up to £2,500 balance and 0.1% over that, BUT you DON'T get the £100.

It's two different accounts and you have to pick one or the other - good interest rate or low interest rate and £100.

I was checking this out yesterday as I have signed up for the premier account and took the £100 plus £25 from being referred by a friend.

But does that mean I cannot now open a premier direct account and obtain the 6% interest for one year since im no longer a new customer as I already have an account with them??
#24
just wondering if i open an account and get £100 free... can i then transfer the £100 and all other money in the account to another account then close this so i'd be up £100 in profit? lol
#25
Well I opened the current account that pays 6% fixed for 12 months...popped my £2500 in to earn 6% straight away...will leave it in for 12 months and just transfer in and out £500 a month to meet the conditions. My £50 from quidco has tracked as well...if I get it a bonus. It all beats the 3% from Halifax I was getting.
