Having a New Year major overhaul of our finances and having reviewed Current Accounts on MSE there is Stop Press to say that the £100 switching bonus cashback on Alliance and Leicester current acounts (Premier and Premier Direct) is being re-introduced on 11th January.

I know this has causesd a lot of debate when it has been posted previously but hopefully still hot for people if they are thinking of switching.

I recently switched from Halifax to Alliance, got my £100 last week!

Don't know why this cold. I was with Halifax for 30 years, decided to switch because of OD charges. Went for A & L, got the £100 for switching, it went very smoothly and it cleared my overdraft - happy days:). Have some heat.
#3
I might do this, halifax give hardly any interest anyway. what the rates like with A&L
#4
This is a good deal

I'm with Halifax and because of the changes to their accounts and the crippling overdraft fees they are now charging, hence our New Year overhaul.

We will be opening one account with A&L on Monday paying in one salary and managing just Direct Debits from that; opening a second account paying in OH salary with First Direct which we will use for monthly shopping etc and to pay a regular monthly amout into an Instant Access isa to pay for one off costs such a Christmas presents whilst earning our tax free savingsallowance.

We will get £100 cashback with both the new bank accounts, plus the £45 Quidco on the A&L so looking like a good start to the new year.

Have a look on the A&L website or on Money Saving Expert.

One current account gives you 6% interest but slightly higher overdraft fees, the other gives you a lower interest but a year's free overdraft.

I switched a while ago, but cancelled after the year as customer service was dire. Deal is good though, got a decent free overdraft for 12 months with my deal to.

how long ago did you switch, ive been waiting for about 3 months

Did this a year ago ..... well worth it. They wrote to my credit card company saying to change the direct debit over (egg) which somehow they ignored then Egg charged me for a direct debit coming back as not paid. I had to phone up Egg and Alliance & Leicester sent a letter aswell and it was all resolved. They seem to be a good bank, bear in mind it will be Santander in a few weeks/months. Only confusing thing is the 9 digit account number, the first digit is the last digit of the sort code (how confusing is that if you don't know)!!
#11
Also the quidco didnt track and it didnt with my Sister either. Had to put in a manual claim. Also importantly last time you had to use their direct debit switching service to qualify for the £100, if you didnt opt for this then you didnt qualify. Also the account required £1000 paid into it monthly or they close it down.
#12
I switched from Halifax due to OD fees (£1 per day for authorised, £2 per day for unauthorised).
Potentially £62 per month charges.... double if you have a joint account also and youre **** with money!!!

To qualify for the £100 A&L credit you have to use their switching service to transfer your direct debits from your current bank and credit your new A&L account with £1000 within 12 weeks of it becoming active.

Yeah, have to admit that is very weird... not sure ill ever get used to that.
Completely unnecessary too!!

A few questions Questions.

Are there any charges to running these accounts. (Don't mean the usual banking charges but monthly account maintenace charges etc)

Also, the £1000 a month you have to pay in. Does this have to be wages or could it just be a direct debit that is set up. If the latter what is to stop you transferring £1000 in and then out.

How long does the account have to be running for.
#15
I wasnt expecting the £100 until Feb. It just appeared in my account!! I got the ball rolling sometime in October. Account was up and running in November and £100 came in Dec. Sounds like you need to chase them but i wouldnt phone as customer service is c**p. They keep you hanging on the end of phone (friends personal experience). Perhaps you call in to your nearest branch if you have one.

I opened up an A&L account when this was on last time.

I STILL kept my old account with Abbey, let A&L do the switch, then told Abbey there was a 'mistake' and they switched back over.

So...I stayed with the Abbey, had a Standing Order set up to A&L on the 1st of the month for £1000.01, a Standing Order with A&L on 2nd of the month into Abbey for £1000.01!

I had a 1 year interest free overdraft of £1000 so that was the money used by me to keep £1000 going through the account each month.

Because it is a computer that does this, the computer doesnt care if the money goes in 1 day and out the next, it just sees that the money has gotne in, as that is what you need to qualify.

There are no 'monthly charges' for running the account UNLESS you DONT put £1000 through it each month

Im with Abbey National, as their the same group (Santander), doesnt that mean you dont get the £100 if you switch?
#20
Did this ages ago- got £150 from them and quidco.

I think HSBC are doing £50 for switching so off to them next. Lets teach these banks a lesson.
#21
I did this last time around changing from Abbey who a bunch of useless ***** and thats being kind.

The switch over was terrible, all this rubbish about a smooth cross over, they couldnt sort my direct debits out and i had to keep calling them day after day for about a month - now its setup they seem ok online banking is good and yes i got my £100 and quidco.

Would i do it again i dont know as they are now santander were all screwed useless idiots all of them..
#22
so this is available from Monday?
#23
Well I did this last time and am still waiting for my £100 which they can't pay out because they said I didn't switch my direct debits (even though I did - my other bank screwed up!!). My OH never got his £100 either because they said he hasn't paid in enough money (even though he has!!). Oh, and he never got round to signing the form to switch but they transferred his account for him anyway!!! Their customer service is appalling and beware if you use their faster payments service as I found out the hard way after 3 failed faster payments and money that I desperately needed "stuck in the nether" for 3 days:

If you are making a faster payment to an account you haven't paid before, they send it as a BACS.
If you try to send more than £250 as a faster payment they sent it as a BACS.
If you make a faster payment after 8pm then it won't go until the next day.

There is no warning of any of this on their website when you are making payments!!!

I definitely wouldn't switch again, it just isn't worth the hassle. And my £50 Quidco hasn't paid out yet either!!

That's smart! - since interest is almost neglible these days maybe the only way to make money from saving is to switch between 2 bank accounts every 6 months and have only one standing order to switch for convenience - have a third bank account as your permanent account. Any one tried this?
#25
It's on the website already so guess this promotion has now started. Great deal and hassle free so well worth the switch (I did it last time).
Also worth mentioning its £45 at quidco and topcashback. £50 at GiveorTake.

halifax are thieves, i opened an childrens account about 30 years ago with £1, but never used it and forgot about it until about 5 years ago...when i enquired the liars said they had written to me about closing it....absolute bull as i hadnt received any letters to my parents address where it was still registered - they havent moved for 37 years......they refused to give me my money.....if i did that id be in court...guess now theres even less chance of getting anything

Wat is the criteria to qualify for this £100 offer? last time when this offer was thr my wife applied and she had good credit score also. but stil they rejected. donno y
#28
Just cancelled my new account today. Basically did not hear anything for 2 months then direct debits started to be missed from my account. Turns out they had switched them before my salary and therefore companies were attempting to take payments from empty account, all it needed was some communication. Phoned up customer services and it was terrible, took me 1 hour for them to work it out and in the end I wish I had never bothered. Remaining with old faithful barclays now, not the best interest rate but less hassle!
#29
Im tempted but dont think i can stand the mistakes and let downs others seem to of had with it all.

One idea though like the other poster would be to open the A&L for the £100 and also the Halifax for the £5 a month offer and transfer the same money one day after the other to make best of both offers. I don't think you have to have direct debits paid from Halifax but if you have more than one put one on each.
#30
Hi,
In the T&C's it says the monthly required payment is £500 and not £1000 as some posters have said. The £100 bonus is NOT available with the Premier Direct Account - this is the A/c paying 6%. Its the Premier Curent Account which pays the bonus so don't sign up to the wrong one.
#31
im already with alliance and leicester and find them very good, they have given me back bank charges on several occasions when ive emailed and complained lol i get charged £5 a month for my overdraft but i dont mind paying that.
#32
Answer to my own question: This offer isn’t available if you already hold or have held one of our current accounts or a Santander UK, cahoot or Cater Allen current account in the last 3 months.
#33
I did this in September 2008, it all worked really well, I got the £100 and £50 Quidco. The minimum amount paying in was £500 last time (Premier Current account) and for the first year they paid a really good interest rate. However I kept my old Natwest account and have now chnaged back as after the first 12 months the interest is rubbish and they charge 50p per day to be overdrawn which is loads more than Natwest, I found it irritating that for a few days a month where I might go O/D I got charged so much. Worth it for the initial bonus though.
#34
Hot from me, I switched last summer, got the £100 after a while and I actually prefer them to Halifax. never had any problems getting throigh on the phone and getting stuff sorted. Seem fine to me.
#35
* What if you have no direct debts?
#36
how to get quidco in this if u r going through the bank counter? or u have to do this online?pls correct me
#37
Im with halifax... and i used to get a couple £35 fees for failed direct debits. however... i upgraded my electron to visa debit and id much rather have a £1 overdraft fee per day than £35 in one go. Apart from that, Halifax are excellent. They always are helpful, polite and you can call the bank directly and not be put on hold for so long.

Just make sure you know what you got in your bank and you wont get fees.
#38
Applied for this, been accepted, then read up on their FP service and it's poor!

Presumably they won't start taking my DD off my old account until I sign something?

FP of 1x £250 max per day is abysmal, I use Halifax and can make as many FP's as a I like up to £10,000...

Hmmmm... maybe I won't be joinng A+L....
#39
I also switched over last time this was on offer due to Halifax and their rubbish overdraft charges. All went smoothly, got my £100 yesterday, and Quidco is at the validated stage for £50. Almost out my overdraft now as well!
#40
I believe First Direct are also still doing £100 for switching to them if anyone doesn't want A&L for some reason.
