Missed that Sony the other day...What you guys think of this? Best <£300 laptop you think?
#3
this doesn't come close to the Sony Vaio deal.

You are only missing the larger hard drive and Sony 'brand'. Spec wise it is otherwise identical - even includes the same chipset, doesn't use one of the cheaper and further cut-down Intel or *shudder* Sis ones other <£350 laptops can do. Also has a 6 cell battery, again, larger than the 4-cells you'd normally get at this price.

I'm certainly not saying it's a substitute (it isn't!), but, it's a good runner up if you are looking for a good cheap (<£300) laptop.

£299.99 now seems to be the standard price for this model - amazon, laptopsdirect, cclonline and ebuyer.
Ebuyer currently comes in at £299.63 delivered (super saver delivery)

Guess I should learn not to trust Google Product search ;)

Personally I'm happy with Amazon, I have prime so the 6p is worth next day delivery. Otherwise, yes, probably best from eBuyer if you can wait :)

its cold in here .

Cold due to the fact that i got a Dell with way better specs (apart from the OS) around 2 months ago for around £50 cheaper.

What sony Vaio deal? :?
#10
Cold due to the fact that Acer is forcing you to run their bloatware; without the laptop will not run properly. Also doesn't support any other OS but Vista. Sony/HP/Toshiba/Dell much better and same prices.

Gonna stick my head out here and say hot.

Unless someone can point me to a better deal for under £299? Looking for as cheap as possible with a decent processor.

Forcing ?
Take it off!
Ten minute job, about as non-techie as any PC maintenance gets - ALL the manufacturers put junk on anyway, and Microsoft think everything installed on a PC needs to run from bootup, but it doesn't.

Biggest problem with Acer is mixed reliablilty, and lousy customer service.

Well that's handy for those with a Time machine, but if you want one now because your Laptop blew up yesterday?

The nature of most deals posted on here is the fact they are going to run out if you don't get a move on!

You could do, provided you don't mind the trackpad not working anymore...

Tripe

I have two Acer Laptops that work perfectly well with ZERO Acer software, Windows XP and Vista work fine using default "mouse" drivers.
If not, leave just those drivers installed, they are unlikely to be proprietary, and will work with OEM versions from the Pad's manufacturer. Like most PC manufacturers, all the bits are made by somebody else.
The only Acer drivers that offer any real functionality are those that offer sound and specify special key functions, even then there are not strictly necessary, but might make it easier to use.
With both my Acer machines, I find the Acer versions of the Graphics drivers work better than the current chipset manufacturer's versions, but still totally functional using those.
