Hey guys
Was just Browsing amazons boxing day deals week and came across this Laptop. An acer Laptop with ivy bridge icore 5, 4GB ram, Intel HD4000, 500gb hard drive, windows 8, all for only £329.99. Although amazon have the rrp as 400, the acer website and other sites have this laptop at an rrp of 500. In any case laptops with these specs usually go for £450-£500. Only bad things about this laptop is no USB 3.0 or bluetooth. Otherwise has the standard features like HDMI, card reader etc.

I know. I can't imagine how we ever managed with only USB2 for the last 10 years.

    what do you expect???!?!?
do you know any other laptop for that price with an ssd?
i guess shouldn't buy this laptop then as it has no 1080p screen and doesn't have 16gb ram

The detail spec on Amazon says i3 although it does say i5 in the title at the top

Would be a good price for an i5 if it is an i5 (might be worth checking with Amazon or ordering and arguing) - though the RRP of £399 suggests it should be the i3 model (listed as the RRP on CCL for the i3-3110M version).

Often see similar spec Dell i5s with HD4000 for around the £350 level after discounts

Having used two Acer laptops in the past (bought because they're usually cheapest) I wouldn't touch Acer with a barge pole. But then again others might have had better experience with it.

What external device do you use that can max out USB2? Just out of … What external device do you use that can max out USB2? Just out of interest.Edit for clarity : Effective throughput of USB2 is 280 MBit/s, fast enough for any mechanical drive and nearly 3 times faster than 100MB ethernet. Gigabit ethernet is obviously quicker but seriously, what devices do you have that needs it? My fastest mechanical drive is around 70MB/S.

Sorry mate, you need to sort out your Mbits and MBs. 8 Bits in a Byte.

    USB 2 is 480Mbits/s, effective speed 280Mbit/s, i.e. 35MB/s

USB 3 is (had to check) claimed up to 5 Gbit so a theoretical 600MB/s, say 300MB/s to allow read/write in real life, that would max out a mechanical HD.

100Mbit/1000Gbit (Gigabit) ethernet transfer speeds are around 12MB/120MB under perfect conditions.

My mechanical Samsung 500GB will transfer at around IIRC 90MB/s

Just because it has i5 people go crazy -.- its intergrated graphics, so … Just because it has i5 people go crazy -.- its intergrated graphics, so for those who want this for gaming you'd be better of getting one of the HP's currys have got on offer with the AMD processor,

Why would someone wanting a gaming rig be looking at a £300 laptop?

Oh and just to inform you, at this resolution, many current games are playable using HD4000 graphics. The likes of Diablo 3 would easily run on high settings fluently. Battlefield 3 would be playable at medium settings at 30+ fps.

My Mac Mini manages around 22fps on average at low settings @ 1920x1200 on BF3, so performance will be significantly better on this at 1366x768.

Some people need to wash that sour taste out of their mouth and realise that Intel's integrated graphics are significantly better than what they once were.

well if you do get an i3 it should be easy enough to get a full refund, if you get an i5 then you have yourselves a very good deal.

ahhh a decent price for an i5 at last!

Although I would say, Acer has bad build quality. I had 2 laptops bought 2 years ago, I treat both the same, but but my Acer is falling apart, screen casing is taped together, bits of plastic fallen off the base... The other is a Sony, and that is rock solid.

    Just purchased mine

Not bothered about usb3 as i won't be transferring larger files and if i do i don't mind waiting for them to transfer
Not bothered about 1080p vs 720p as the human eye can not tell the difference on this size screen
Not bothered about build quality as i won't be traveling with it and the hard drive is massive for my requirements.
If you want something for gaming then buy a console or desktop. Laptops are not really for gaming and can overheat when playing hi spec games.

Your comment is not relevant to this deal, you generally don't get 1080 screens at this price and 768 is acceptable to most folks.
However your statement is completely wrong; the human eye can easily tell the difference between 1080p and 720 on this size screen - unless you have a very very long lap of course

As in so many deals the spec of this laptop seems unbalanced; I very much suspect that Acer had a bunch of poorly regarded / reviewed laptops laying around, unsaleable due to their ancient technology; but knowing folks are more swayed by processor power than screen, keyboard, track-pad and build quality, they shoved some i5 processors in and are very successfully offloading them on the HUKD deal hunters.

Bought this on behalf of my brother and pointed this out to him earlier - lifehacker.com/597…ree

Incidentally, I'm typing this using my wife's four year old Acer Aspire 5715Z... it's on its second battery and it's missing the M key due to my tomfoolery, but it runs wonderfully (Linux Mint atm). Yet my parent's two year old Acer something-or-other is falling apart. I think it's all about how well you look after them...

I uninstalled McAfee + all the other bloatware, but I found Windows defender a resource hog, my disk was constantly spiking at 100%, I've installed panda antivirus (cloud) free, and it seems to be running very nippy now. Also Windows Defender automatically switches itself off if you install another antivirus.

For anyone wanting to nuke the hard drive and install Windows 7, you need to go into the BIOS (F2) and disable UEFI mode first otherwise it blocks the Windows 7 DVD from booting!
