Much cheaper in B&M and Indian shops though not extra virgin. Coconut oil freezes in winter so what are going to use it for? Not as healthy as olive oil due to saturated fats.

​not true. it's a question of what you use it for. extra virgin olive oil is best for dressings/dips. plain ole olive oil best for frying at low temps and cold pressed coconut oil best for frying at high temps. veg/sunflower oil to be avoided completely. it's down to the presence/formation of aldehydes.

The coconut oil that is not extra virgin found in B&M and Indian shops is processed and refined oil that losses much of its health and flavour benefits..that is the nature of the beast.

I use the oil in a variety of ways in cooking as the taste and smell it imparts gets my juices flowing. I also use it as a skin and hair conditioner.

Keeping the oil at room temperature keeps it fairly malleable and there are a range of techniques to use with solid oil via Google.

The jury is out on saturated fats. Saturated fat may simply be a convenient scapegoat for the true problem with our modern diets: the food we eat. That is high in trans fat, high in saturated fat, high in sodium, low in fruits and vegetables, and low in omega-3 fatty acids (all common in our over-processed, industrialised, commidified society). You've heard of the Mediterranean paradox where their diet is very high in saturated fat but very low on refined, processed food and very low on cardio-vascular disease?

Coconut oil has been demonized in the past because it contains saturated fat… coconut oil doesn’t contain your average saturated fats, like the ones you would find in cheese or red meat or pizza. It contains Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) – which are fatty acids of a medium length. Most of the fatty acids in the diet are long-chain fatty acids, but the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are metabolized differently. They go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are used as a quick source of energy and are not stored as fat.

Saturated fat has been the villain of the dietary piece and popular fallacy for decades. Saturated fats are not bad for you per se but it is the combination of other foods [esp. refined] that causes the harm. I've always eaten and cooked with butter as its flavour and qualities are unparalleled whereas i find processed margarine disgusting. The issue of satuartaed fats in our diet is more nuanced than you believe.
