I've got Amazon Prime Video; I'm assuming that I will be able to play and download series on this and watch them back offline?

Yes, well as long as you have the storage space.

When these tablets are connected to your Prime membership it unlocks a feature called On Deck, which downloads a few films & programmes that you might be interested in too. Its handy as it means that there is usually something to watch when out of a WifI area.

from Amazon:
"Videos downloaded by On Deck are stored on your device or SD card depending on your storage setting. On Deck downloads in a special shadow mode, using storage only when it's available, and won't impact performance. When you download apps, videos, music, books, and other content, On Deck automatically makes room – there’s no hassle of needing to clear out the space yourself. On Deck will never block you from using your storage the way that you want."

unfortunately the On Deck feature on my Fire Tablet insist on sending me Adam Sandler movies regardless of how i set my preferences.:|

At £35, these are frankly ridiculous value for money.

Got one from John Lewis. They are good little tablets

£15 cheaper than Amazon as I type and no Special Offers either. I found mine a little slow though, if they did one with 2Gb RAM I'd be happy to pay more.

Look on YouTube for reviews. It's basic but faster than my old dying Hudl.

Bit of lag loading web pages but it's £35 and not an Apple IPad lol.

Don't expect it to be amazing but I'm getting this for the lounge/kids/grandfather etc.

Yes, you can. Though do check if this is only 8gb or 8gb with micro SD card slot - the ones with slot take up to I think 128gb, much better for downloading loads of boxsets.

Thinking of getting a few of these for the kids' birthdays... apart from the obvious benefit of the 2 year guarantee on the Kids version is there any real benefit to paying another £35?
I figure a robust case can be bought for £10ish but not sure how much use they'll get out of the 'fire for kids'.

Grandkids use kindles in my house and say they are just as good as their ipads . . . . . As you say a sturdy cover will protect it.

Works well, you are tied to amazon for apps, i cant fault it in any way, it is not at the level of my ipad which cost £400+ you can send pdf s to it as well, i use it without a cover and have never had any problems

At this price it is a no brainer BUY IT

Not wishing to poo-poo the OP's deal, but I really don't see the appeal in these. At £35, it's worth a punt if you can root it and dump the Amazon-centric crap - however, 1024x600 is a crappy resolution for surfing the net. Still, I suppose anything higher will expose the weakness of the 1GB RAM.

Can this have the rom replaced with cyanogen?
Possibly - if they come with v 5.3.2.0 or earlier of FireOS then they can be rooted and run CM12 or Fire Nexus, the former of which is no longer getting updates. If it comes with v 5.3.2.1 or later then there is no root available atm.

I've bought a few of them from argos and they tend to be older version of firmware - especially if you get it from a store that doesn't sell many & they just have them sitting in stock for a while.

Can you add the play store to these?

I sideloaded the play store onto the one I had and disabled updates if I remember correctly, not sure if you still can on the latest ones - I used an ADB method - not really straight forward for none techies although not complicated either!

Just googled and found this how to -

Really? Do they write for TechRadar, or Stuff Magazine, or are they just 3-8 years old maybe?

I used this method, very simple, just grabbed the very latest apk's from apkmirror.

I had mine running all the stuff from Root Junky, no Special Offers, Play Store, etc. I didn't realise you should turn off updates though. OTA update arrived and that was it.

Anyone want to buy a paperweight?

I bought one of these a while back after 9 months the battery was draining ridiculously quickly. Got in touch with amazon and no quibble they sent a replacement. I was on the online chat and lost 20% while chatting. 4 months on replacement is poor battery as well. You can be sat at home doing nothing with it and it can lose 20-30% in 2-3 hours. I charge it once to twice a day. If you go out turn the wifi off else is drains quick as well. I listen to music, stream and read which is is great for. Camera is rubbish. You can expand memory with an sd card. Next time I am getting a more expensive bigger hd one its camera looks better too.

I had the same thought and bought the Argos deal instead. I found similar cases on eBay for around £7 (and some had the built in stand which the Amazon one doesn't). I have Amazon Prime so I can get the fire for kids at a rate of £2/month. Taken all this into account, it seemed better to just buy the tablet at this silly price!

Also if you're not sure if the kids would like 'fire for kids' then you could just subscribe for a month and cancel at any point if you decide against it. As it's a pay monthly thing I'm presuming you can cancel and restart whenever you fancy. (Haven't tested this out yet, as the tablet is a birthday present for late May.)
