Is there any reason to choose this over a Chromecast?

Heat for the price, mind.
#2
Fantastic thanks!! Been looking for something to use my £25 American Express credit on. :D
#3
Have both brought for plex use. Thinking this would be more powerful and have better codec/format support so be able to play more formats. It's ok pretty limited interface is bit to store front even with prime no option not to see everything they then want to sell you. But add plex add xmbc (took a while) can play more through that as that will do the processing more to convert to formats it does play. So took pressure of server. Set up right this can do 5.1 sound.
All in all I brought to play with give it 4/10 actually love my chromecast more. But then I have good wifi if wifi is problem this has ethernet so can cable.

much quicker, better performance. XBMC/KODI- Great box good price.

i got one of these for £55 as a Prime customer on offer just before official release...and put it this way I sold mine on.

I bought it mainly to be able to run XBMC on hoping it was a bit better than an Apple TV 2 but to be honest I wasn't that impressed. and for that reason I sold it just a week later...it is of course all geared up for their Prime streaming service, but for that reason everything else is a little closed off....Im sure someone will release a full hack for it sometime ala ATV2 XBMC hacks, but until then it just didn't offer enough...

I have to admit Ive been spoiled as I run a full HTPC with XBMC and its bulletproof and fast as hell...but to be honest, if you have a relatively new Samsung TV then this will do no more to stream films that the Plex app you can install yourself...

heat for price as its cheapest out there...but not sure its worth even that price for those who want more than the standard Amazon front end

No Vudu and Flixster only streams in SD on this. I'm out

In contrast to the above, I think these are excellent. Xbmc is a pain as it's not on the front page, but it works extremely well....... And one you have it then you don't need any other streaming service (though I have prime anyway).

Beat my Roku, Boxee and Appletv by a long way, all of which have now been sold on (not as good as my htpc, but then it cost no where near as much to buy our run).

XBMC otherwise not really except for the kids: the android gaming controller is pretty good (sold seperately)

I got one last week and its great, Was using xbmc on a raspberrypi previously, interface is very snappy and a shortcut can be created on the fire home screen to xbmc using an app called 'Llama'. The unit itself is very neat and looks good on the TV unit and the remote works well with xbmc, If android games are your thing you can hook up a 360 or PS4 controller too.

If you install the SPMC fork of Kodi you can have it on your front page ;)

I'm also selling mine since having it from UK release. lack of VPN support, no root currently available so no USB storage. no way to block auto updates without affecting the stability of the box. (blocking URLs, stops amazon video working)

pros, remote is very good but voice only work with amazon video, play high graphic games without breaking a sweat.
#18
These boxes are excellent for XBMC. the version to install is SPMC which is actually available via the Amazon app store. It hen runs everything i throw at it and is a lot more stable than any other box ive used including the M8.

If you can't find SPMC then it can be sideloaded via a program called ADBfire. XBMC can also be added to the front screen using llama app and a bit of modification.

As long as you can follow the various guides online its easy.

Same here. Stuck XBMC on it, signed up for a free month with Netflix and I have Prime Membership. A great piece of kit.

Having tried a number of streaming boxes in the past - Apple TV (original big one), Apple TV2, Full HTPC under the telly, we have a Chromecast in the playroom, and the Roku 2 XS the Amazon Fire replaced - this box is far faster than all of them and the Plex interface is particularly nice.
There seems little reason to run XBMC on it for me personally, but understandably others will be different as they host their media on a network share which Plex doesn't really cover (it needs a nigh on full-fledged PC/Mac to host it fully, some NAS boxes can do it but they lack the grunt to do transcoding of multiple streams). However it does run everything very fluidly and is a no brainer if you have Prime membership for access to Amazons movies/TV - though like Netflix it is still a poor bunch of content IMO.
Only downside is that it doesn't support IR so means I am back to a second remote control for the first time in donkeys years as we use a Harmony.
Its a good box, if you have already got anything else then not worth the upgrade really. They all have their pros and cons though.

This or pi with xbian ?

The Pi is "alright" but it is pretty slow and laggy in comparison when running XBMC to this box, particularly the media scraping which takes an age on larger libraries. The good thing of the Pi is that it is particularly cheap and well supported, but you are looking at purchasing IR dongle addons, has no built in Wifi (if important to you), needs a power adapter, SD card/USB stick etc, maybe a case too and you are approaching the same price IMO.

got kodi and spmc on the front page, excellent for that, and only use it for that, apart for the aquarium app, lol. you must have network storage as no usb support yet, best media player at the price. i paid £59.00 with tesco code.
#24

And doesn't really net you anything "extra" to be honest for that cash. Although it does carry the Sky on demand service stuff which is lacking from the Fire, but then Roku doesn't have Amazon Prime video either...and the Prime does have better app support if that is your thing.

I bought one a few weeks ago, am now retiring my ATV2, this is the best and most flexible android based media player for XBMC/KODI , Plex etc, and many other android apps (more added to amazone store every day including SPMC a fork of xbmc for fireTV) can stream from the internet or NAS/PC, even my wife can use the remote to watch allher stuff, also you can get 30 days free amazon instant or netflix, choice is yours.

to load xbmc without headach use adbfire tool it can only get better!!

This is exactly what I did. I love it, spmc is super fast to be honest that's all it's used for...but that is why I bought it as my previous box used to buffer loads. This is much better, bought on release and well pleased with it. Without the shortcut it's a hassle, personally you need the shortcut for it to be easier to load up. Gutted I can't get vpn...if anybody has had any success would b grateful for any tips ;)

Agree with the amazon prime (which is disappointing having a roku) however there's alot more support for the roku plus you can install private channels ;)

Good comparison here: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/peripherals/1000059/amazon-fire-tv-vs-apple-tv-vs-roku-3-whats-the-best-tv-streaming-device

once you learn sideload apps from a pc on to it (same proces as when set up xbmc) its limitless. some require mous3 remotes (Wukong remote, which is free in app store) will help with that

For those who have installed XBMC onto this ... (1) can you add skins and add-ons in the normal way ? and (2) can you get access to the config files to tell it to connect to a remote mySQL database for it's library ?
