This might be of interest to those who buy Region 1 DVD's direct from the US. There is a reasonable list of titles inc:

Goodfellas, Unforgiven, Ray, The Deer Hunter from $19.95 (approx £10) + postage.

Providing purchases are £18 or less they should be exempt from duty and VAT, therefore, order separately.

Be careful with this. Amazon declare the price for both items on the front, so you may get charged Vat, but you should be able to claim back, but it can take 4-6weeks.

thanks for this just ordered a couple to be delivered to a friend coming over for christmas.

All HD-DVD's are region free, so i will be able to play these on my xbox 360 HD-DVD player? yes?

its the thing with custom they charge you for orders worth more than 18 quid in value. search the forum, there are loads of previous discussion on the topic.

Just picked up Goodfellas and The Departed for $32.92 delivered. Under the £18 tax threshold.

Originally picked up the offer on AVForums, but thanks to the OP also.

Check out AVF.

I ordered them and got them shipped to my uncle in NY who bought them over....

I bought the first two Pirates of the Carribean movies from Amazon US when they did a similar offer on Blu-ray. On the customs covering note, they listed the full price of both ( 2 @ $24.99) so I got hit with £12 in import duty and handling fees. On the included invoice, however, they listed both at full price, then a promotional discount of $24.99

just remember the VAT charge is based on the total order total - product and postage. And there is customs on top of that.
#15
Great deal: voted hot.

Does anyone know how long this offer is running for?
#16
Mmm. Don't know if I can be bothered with the hassle of claiming back the customs charge from Amazon. How difficult would it be?

No its not, its only on the price of the item and NOT the delivery price aswell.

I emailed customs when they did mine wrong. Took 3months for a reply (think more than that actually) and even then they only paid back half in error

Cheers, I'm well aware of how the customs charges work, I was wanting specific info on how amazon are doing their declarations for this offer thats all. Just wondering if it was a certainty or just heresay, but as someone here has confirmed it thats fine, I shan't be ordering.

I got charged 11.32 today for two HD DVD from deep discount DVD which were $2 over the limit. Ridiculous and not worth the risk.

If the price of the items excluding shipping is over £18 then the charge is based on the total cost including the postage charges.

So two $19.99 HD DVD's with a total cost of $39.98 before shipping would be over £18. The charged is calculated on $39.98 + $8.97 postage = $48.95. So Id make it about £12/£13.

Theres new rules on duty these days and a lower limit, so I dont think duty would be charge in this case but its 3.5% when it does apply. VAT is 17.5% and then theres the PO handling fee of £8.

I thought The Fountain was superb.

I know others who didn't like it.

I hope it is good, i haven't seen it, although i like the directors work, requiem was brilliant.
#24
Amazon delcare the total amount before delivery (i think) so there will be a chance customs will stop it. Also, you won't get them before xmas, you might get it during if you're lucky, but highly unlikely.
#25
I ordered Departed (not available in HD in UK yet) and Goodfellas (one of my fave films ever) that I've never seen in HD. :w00t:
#26
Good grief, they don't waste any time do they! I ordered some and then changed my mind, ten minutes later they're already shipping! Oh well, hopefully customs will go easy on me

Yes it is. Get your facts straight.

Your Customs Allowance

* Customs charges may only be applied from goods sent into the UK from outside the EU. Orders from within have already had the relevant VAT and duty paid in that EU member state. Jersey is not classed as within the EU, but as a Special Territory , and as such are liable to VAT.
* The current allowances for DVDs, CDs and the such are £18, or £36 for gifts.
* If an item is VAT-exempt (such as books), you will not be liable for charges on those items
* Postage and packing must be remembered. If the total value of goods in the package that are liable to duty and VAT is less than £18 WITHOUT P&P, you will not be liable for a charge. If the total value of goods in the package exceeds £18, the VAT and duty is charged on the total value of the goods INCLUDING P&P
* The £36 allowance for gifts only applies to unsolicited gifts from one individual to another (such as a birthday present). Goods marked as "gifts" from a company fall in to the same category as any other purchases and so the £18 allowance applies.
