Whilst this is a good price for an ipod its still not great for an mp3 player.

£160 for an 8gb ipod touch or £40 for an 8gb sansa clip. Both play mp3s (and arguably the sansaclip has higher audio quality) both have screens (sansa clip is basic with no wizbang interface).

Can't argue with the bit on an MP3 player, but the ipod touch is so much more than an mp3 player I would say that the actual music is secondary on these.

But it isn't just an MP3 player. It does a whole lot more. You can't possibly compare it to other MP3 players because it is an all round "entertainment" device.

Or buy from Argos for £189 and get £15 I tunes voucher and £20 of Argos vouchers (2 x £10 to be spent at different times)

Hasn't the iphone got the multifunctioanl device part of the apple portfolio cornered? Looks like the ipod touch falls through the hole middle these days?

Not for those with children or don't want to spend £500 on a phone. An iphone is £320 extra for phone and 3g access data access.

Does this have a microphone on?

The 32GB model is £249.00 and I have no use for the iTunes voucher, other then to give it away. The straight cash deal that Amazon offer will always win.

Seriously why would anyone buy one of these ? You can get a decent android handset for £80 - £90. Root and rom it stick a 32 gb micro sd card in it. £120 vs £240 plus its a proper phone all the decent free android apps.

No idea why people buy these things as a media player they are rubbish you can only play Apple propriatary formats on them.

Are you seriously suggesting that something like the Orange San Francisco makes anything like a respectable mult-media player? You mustn't care to much about what your music sounds like or something.

I'm a big critic of Apple, put come on, comparing a sub £100 phone to the iPod in the audio/video stakes is more then a little bonkers X)

Some serious misinformation here.

Since when did mp3's, jpeg etc only work on apple products?

Whilst an itouch may not be everyone's 'must have' gadget they do a lot more than people are alluding to here but I'm guessing that's because those people have never owned one. If it's not for you then just move on but if you have to comment on the product please don't just make stuff up.
I've got one of these and it's great, does everything I need and more. Can listen to music, watch movies, surf the net, play games, controls my Logitech squeeze boxes, has a great display - I can't fault it.
Do I like Apple as a company? Hell no, but it won't stop me buying one of their products if it fits my needs better than any other product out there.

Seriously? The iPod audio quality myth is still around? You will not notice any difference in audio quality. Additionally, if you're just buying for music, there are better Apple alternatives as well (Nano is their dedicated music device). This is clearly not just a MP3 player, its a cheaper iPhone without a contract.

Also dumbing down the iPod Touch and iOS to a "wizbang interface" shows how much you really know about it. Would you post on a smartphone deal that you can get a cheap Nokia handset for £10 that'll make calls just as well?

Please post your misinformation elsewhere.

Android has the worst media player of any smartphone around (iOS, WinPh7, PalmOS). Not only that, the 3rd party alternatives aren't that great either, and there's no 1st party syncing service.

If you're judging based on how good a device is for music, I'd say what you've suggested above is possibly the worst you can do.

None of the formats Apple support (except for Apple Lossless) are proprietary. Please stop spouting FUD.

Are you honestly comparing a sansa clip to the 4th gen iPod touch? The people that buy these mp3 players like the sansa clip, iPod touch etc are no audiophiles and will not notice any major difference in sound quality. so please stop with your crap.

The iPod touch is miles better than the sansa clip. It is much more than just a simple mp3 player. It had all the best apps, games,THE best mobile web browser in safari, 2 cameras. Download podcasts directly on the device. Jailbreak to expand its capability even more.

Apple seriously miscalculated by not including GPS in their new itouches. I know they needed to differentiate their itouch from the iphone, but it will deter a lot of buyers.

...except it also doesnt make mobile phone calls, so not much like a cheaper iPhone really! Thanks for the chuckle.

I agree that this is a more complete entertainment device, but with the likes of iPhone, Blackberry or Android Handsets (that more and more people have) I still can't see the draw. It has been successful which means the market place for a portable multifunctional device without phone capabilities is larger than I thought.

However this is still a good price, despite the multipostings.

i'd like to see a good android handset for £90! the closest is the orange san fransico at £99 but it's still only just getting in at the bottom end of the good android scale

the ipod touch is a great entertainment device and my old 2nd gen 8gig version is still going strong and keeps me entertained with a good selection of apps.

if i was in the upgrade market i'd be tempted by these offers (which I do agree have been repeatedly posted now)

Theres a lot of apps for that, although this is quite US orientated check out this article:
http://lifehacker.com/5636976/how-to-turn-your-ipod-touch-into-an-iphone-4g-edition

Although I now have an iPhone I am tempted to go back to my old set-up which was using a Nokia N series phone and an iPod Touch, and running Joikuspot on the Nokia:

http://www.joikushop.com/

Nokia for phone calls and texts (I love T9 over touchscreen) which a HUGELY Better battery life, and then Joikuspot to turn the phone into a mifi to share my internet access with the iPod touch for browsing on the go.

Also meant on nights out I wasnt always terrified I would sit on my iPhone or fall on it and crack the screen, just leave the iPod at home. And gaming on the iPod didnt mean I was left unable to call and text people..

VLC Player was made available through the app store this week.

Free, and completely does away with the hassle of having to encode to mp4.

Tested it on the wife's 3GS last night, and it's absolutely brilliant. It's also compatible with the Touch.

For the record, until recently I had a 2nd gen Touch and absolutely loved it. I've got an iPhone now and wouldn't go back, but for people that prefer to keep their phone for phoning and their vid/audio/games device for vid/audio/games, the Touch really is brilliant.

To be honest I still think it's overpriced and not radically superior to the earlier models to justify upgrading, but once the money's paid you'll be glued to the thing.

Think some are missing the point. Personally I think this is mainly for kids who also have a cheaper phone. My son loves his and uses it constantly. He gets free games and we look out for the 59p ones on sale. He also has all his music on it. You can't compare with an iPhone or mp3 in my opinion. He's 11 and most of his friends have one now and no doubt others will be getting their first this Xmas. In fact he hardly touches his DS since he got his touch.

I have 2 children and both can use an ipod touch ones 3 and ones 5 cant say that about every piece of tech
but at 40 quid for an mps player compared to 169 if your just looking for a player 169 does seem like alot
I just love the apps you can get all mine are free everything from radio to setting your sky player from anywhere in your house love it best device ever

BTW to the person who says you cant use it for calls. DealExtreme sell a Sim-Jacket that enables you to use it as a phone LMAO

Having iPod in the title of this product is simply a marketing thing based on the huge success of the iPod brand. An iPod Touch has nothing to do with mp3 players, it is a pocket computer that happens to play mp3 files as well as do 100,000 other things. Why people feel the need to compare the two is beyond me. And yes, it can literally do 100,000 different things, everything from being a spirit level to a guitar tuner to a barcode scanner, not to mention it plays games that are just as good as DS games but cost 59p instead of £25. That last point alone makes this a compelling device.

Sorry never heard of this could you give us more details or a link if poss. Thanks.

Further to this I think this may be something called an apple peel (seriously not kidding) on the deal extreme site. seems to suggest it can be a phone but when i saw the work jailbreak i realised it was not for me but some may want a look. Also not sure it is for the ipod touch 4 as someone as stated one of the buttons is in the wrong place.

Does anyone know if these can be jailbroken?
#33
I have the 32GB Gen 3 iPod touch. I am an audiophile, musician and games player and it is a great bit of kit. The sound is great. Remember this is also down to file quality and headphone quality (the Apple headphones are awful. Buy a new pair). Games are great and you can get quality games like 'Angry Birds' for 59p. I payed £220 about 4 months ago for the 3rd generation model so £216 for a 4th Gen 32GB is good.
#34
I have the 8GB 4th gen Touch. I bought it because I'm stuck in a contract with my N97 and so couldn't really get an iPhone. You can have so much fun with the plethora of apps available.
#35

Thanks I never had a clue about that. Like I said its not for me the word jailbreak makes me shudder as i would end up breaking the whole thing but someone might be interested.

Because if you give on to a child with or without the sim card in they can make emergency calls not a bad thing I hear you all say. Until the police knock on your door for false alarms. !!!

I doubt it, since none of the previous itouch had GPS and sold ridiculously well.
