an "e-reader" is nothing more than a piece of software which will always improve with each carnation. The kindle is a tablet and a very VERY low end one at that. If the Kindle was to fall, they would still tout their e-reading software as a payable app (or free, but heavily linked\locked to their store) to all mobile platforms (so much R & D have gone into it.) In that sense hardware is almost irrelevant and any tablet\smartphone\computer can become an e-reader in its own right.
Display aside i refuse to believe for a second that kindle's interface is the best "experience" on the market. Infact, having used both this and a couple Android e-readers i can honestly say that the Android's was generally slicker, more intuitive, easier to navigate, more features and alot less restrictive functionality than this. Software is ten a penny, what your actually buying into is prehistoric hardware.
Maybe i'm too forward a thinker to stop and smell the roses on this one. I'm certainly stumped as to how they have become so popular in a market with so many options. I can only put this down to a successful marketing campaign (aimed at the older customers who constantly loiter around beaches by the looks of the TV ad.)
I've spent too much time arguing the toss here so i guess we're just going to have to split hairs:
If you have really poor eyesight or spend all your time reading on a beach somewhere on a unpopulated desert island then it might be worth a punt.
Other than that it makes no sense in buying this over a cheap, higher spec'ed tablet, for half the price whatsoever.
The sooner people move on from these the quicker the real digi ink will have to hit the shelves. By supporting this market you are essentially delaying progress, which is bad for us all.
Whether you "disagree" with a fact is irrelevant to the capabilities of the Kindle and other eReaders, and coming up with nonsense about it just being different software in a less functional but otherwise categorically equivalent device is either wilfully or blindly ignorant, but ignorance nonetheless.
The Kindle's superiority over the iPad for reading books is entirely down to specifically designed and targetted hardware, and no amount of puffing and whistling by internet tech propagandists should distract the genuinely inquisitive and open-minded from that.

Jump to unread Post a CommentAre you comparing this with any specific model, like the Kindle Touch? This wifi only version, also called kindle 4 wifi, is better value for money in my opinion, whereas the touch is latest, is easier to use with the touch feature (although some people prefer the side buttons which are missing from touch). Touch has more storage capacity and better battery life.
The ones with 3G feature have hspda mode, giving you access to kindle store and the possibility to download books on the go. (note that compared to the previous kindle 3G keyboard model, the new touch 3G provides only limited Internet access). The amazon kindle page gives a good overview of the dimensions and features.
Not a huge amount. The keyboard ones are bigger but have a keyboard (which is useful for web browsing and searching the store on your kindle) they're also older too... one of them has 3G support as well which means you can access the kindle store anywhere you can get a mobile signal (you can also surf the net but again not really recommended.) This is a perfectly good model to get if you're intending on getting one that's portable and you don't mind browsing for books on amazon's website on your pc which is my preferred method as the store available on the kindles is rubbish. a light and some kind of hard padding for the screen is quite important if it's intended to be taken out & about a lot as they can crack under pressure easily.... for mine I've taken a dvd case, cut the front & back off and sellotaped them together and inserted that into a soft padded case so it covers the screen when it's in there, cheap and easy solution.
This Kindle (Kindle 4/Kindle NT) is the lightest and smallest, but it has half the storage (2GB, still good for hundreds of books) and half the battery life (still lasts for a few weeks) of the other Kindles, and has no audio. It isn't a touch screen model and a clunky keyboard pops-up on screen when you need to enter text/passwords). You can buy and download books from Amazon via wi-fi, so if you have a wi-fi connection at home you don't need to connect it to your PC to load books onto it.
Perfect if all you want to do is read books on it.
The Kindle Touch is slightly bigger and heavier, it has 4GB storage and the battery will last for a month or so. It's the latest Kindle, it had audio so you can play MP3s and audio books on it, and has a touch screen (no page turn buttons). You can buy a Wi-Fi or a £G model, the 3G lets you buy and download books from Amazon anywhere in the world, you don't need to access a wi-fi connection.
Perfect if you want a touch screen model.
The Kindle Keyboard (Kindle 3) is a bit older but has all the features of the Kindle Touch apart from the touch screen. It's significantly bigger (due to the keyboard) and is a bit heavier again than the Kindle Touch. The 3G version of this model lets you download books anywhere in the world the same as the Kindle Touch 3G, but the difference is you can also use the 3G connection to surf the web, check email etc, whereas the Touch is restricted to Amazon's website.
Perfect if you want to be able to go online as well as read books.
if you personally can stand the refresh - then go for it - not for me as I had a play with one for a day and the refresh drove me bonkers
as it stands I can only charge it from a laptop/pc
did yours came with a mains charger?
They don't come with chargers, cheap enough to buy on ebay if you need one.
Asda are selling the Kobo touch at £59.99, brought the wife one yesterday. Haven't seen one in action yet though to compare the two.
I bought the Kobo touch from Staples also, along with a very handy vacuum cleaner. Gave my wife my Kindle keyboard 3g because she uses it more than me for email when abroad. For a reading experience the Kobo isn't a patch on the Kindle keyboard. The background is slightly greyer giving less contrast, and it is so much slower. Thinking of getting a refurb Kindle keyboard 3g because I've hardly read much since I've had the Kobo.
Why buy a 1 trick pony when for a similar price you could buy a pony that has a repertoire.
You Gerry hattricks & your adaptation speed.

What a foolish post. If you are comparing a tablet to an e-reader then the joke is on you.

Please expand. Is an e-reader not just a piece of software running on tablet hardware?
After some thought I've dismissed the Kindle Touch, I can see the accidental Page turns driving me nuts. I also like the physical page turning buttons, just seems unnatural to touch the page on a device like this to turn the page.
Very tempted. These refurbs are always decent. Hmm shall I??
So special it warrants buying one over using a free app to do the same thing.
Some people (i.e me) will never want touch hate smudges on the screen.
