Would be a little bit out of my price range, but had a quick look and can't see why a top end phone nowadays has such big bezels (I don't mind a large phone as long as it's not wasted space).

Ugly phone with huge bezels. Sony should learn from the Mi Mix and fire their lazy design staff that have more or less put out the same phone design for years.

This is a proper premium phone. The Z5 premium, which is its equivalent, is still selling for £350+. Doesn't mean I'm going to buy it though lol. If the S8 is at this price point I'll be going for that. The only feature I like is the super slow motion but even that's a gimmick.

There's a reason no one else is putting 4K displays in phones... because it's utterly pointless. Sony are just willy-waving.

Have you never heard of virtual reality?

I do notice the difference between my S5's HD screen and my Note 4's 2K screen.

You cannot compare it to a 4K TV screen as that it a lot further away.

If you can tell the difference between a HD TV and a 4K one you will be able to tell the difference with a phone.

Is it really worth the £200 difference between standard version ?

Totally agree. S7 nougat update sets the phone res to 1920x1080. You have to change the res to a higher res after the update but if I'm honest I can't tell the difference

I have a Z3 and was thinking of getting the Galaxy S8 but just read a vs XZ premium and the XZ premium seems a slightly better spec and as the price will probably be more on the S8 I might change my mind.

Absolute beast of a phone! Could do better with evolving its designs but still a sexy phone.

This phone looks amazing and I loved my Z3. The only issue i had with the Z3 was when i first purchased it the camera quality was fantastic and then sony updated the phone and the images from the camera on the z3 were not the best.
I was looking forward to the price release for this phone however, its expensive so i decided to take a chance with the oneplus 3T. The oneplus 3T is a great phone and has a great front facing camera. The battery life is brilliant and lasts me a day and a half with general use and 4G and WiFi on.
The only downside to the oneplus 3T i feel is the rear camera. The images become blurred when you zoom in on a picture that you have just taken. It doesnt blur heavily however, it is slightly noticeable when you zoom in way more than just a pinch.

I disagree. I haven't compared a 4K mobile screen to a television, you did that. The viewing distance and screen real estate of course come into the equation, but it boils down to the ability to discern individual pixels right? I happen to think that 1440p is ideal for a phone; I can tell the difference between my S7 (1440p) and OnePlus One (1080p) and with the former cannot discern individual pixels at a 'normal' viewing distance (though granted they are different sizes and panel types). Increasing the resolution beyond that would be pointless compromise on performance and battery life for no visual benefit *in my opinion!*.

Im so disappointed with my Z3 camera, so much so that I reverted back to my canon G9. I hope the XZ has a massive improvement .

I'd be surprised. I've tried every Sony since the Z1 and they've all had crap cameras - no matter what DXOmark might say.

Have you noticed any difference in battery with it at 1080p?

The reason you can notice a difference between an S5 and a Note 4 is because the S5 uses a pentile pixel layout c.f. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PenTile_matrix_family#Controversy

Unless receiving a 4k source, a 1080p TV will look identical to a 4k TV with all other things being equal.

Battery life for me is incredible after nougat update.

I wouldn't take design lessons from Xiaomi based on the Mi Mix! Oversized to accommodate the lack of bezels, with a poor ratio whereby you end up with letterboxing. Essentially faux bezels. And a front facing camera on the bottom of the phone. The screen isn't particularly good either. Style over substance, hence it's a "concept" phone and only for sale in China. I'm sure once the technology is appropriate for bezel less phones the big boys will make them.

Nice one. Thought it was a great idea with the Note. To reduce resolution when not needed, if it resulted in better battery life.

Sony designer must have the easiest job ever. For me Sony are getting worse not better and rehashing the same phone.

Sony is way behind when it comes to designs. Same design for many yeas even after changing the alll xperia series they even still use xa,xz. Not only design but they even think of their phones names..... sooo strange and so lazy from such a top company

I've got a Z5 at the moment and can't decide between this and going back to Samsung when the S8 comes out.

My Z5 has been brilliant except has seemed prone to buggy apps and message service draining the battery, an issue I never has with my S5. Sony camera is miles ahead though.

Not sure if you are serious or being sarcastic, either way it's about convenience for me these days. I used to be a serious photographer in the past with a few grands worth of equipment. My camera bag weighed about 8 kgs. I just couldn't be bothered these days.

Has stereo front facing speakers, the only flagship that seems to have it this year.

Sony mobiles are well made, brand image still strong and they remain committed to Android through various trials and tribulations. Those big bezels however. Horrible!

Sony handsets are not well made - speaking as someone who is on their 5th (about to be 6th) Z5 'Premium'.
Having had the device for 18 months, the headphone socket has never worked on ANY of my 5 replacement handsets. i've added a link to the Sony forum detailing the problem.

Headphone jack issue

I could forgive Sony if they actually bothered to help us, but nope, they've been rude and utterly useless.

reason for big bezels is because it has dual speakers, I personally don't mind the bezels as it doesn't bother me. and I like the fact it's not a curved screen as my Samsung s7 edge is a pain when holding it. it's £640 at unlocked mobiles for pre order. it has some beastly specs too so will be pre ordering this!

also Sony 4k hdr screen has option to go from 4k to 2k to 1080p so you have the choice for whichever resolution you prefer

I have a Z3, one of the best phones I've ever owned and probably the smoothest Android phone out there at the time, two years later, its still fast and smooth. Let down by its 16gb storage but its just as fast as friends S7's, gaming and app use is same speed.
I probably wouldn't pay £600+ for an Android though.

Nice but not really there.

Sure it has 4K screen bit it's running in 1080p mode unless you start one of the Sony apps for photos, movies etc.

Likewise, VR on 4K requires too much GPU power so it won't be usable at full resolution. Also LCD has slower response time than OLED.

960fps is good for about 0.18s when the buffer is full.

Battery is also average.

Nice try, but nothing special and certainly not worth the asking price.

Unfortunately it doesn't support VR as it's got an LCD screen which has a refresh rate that it's too slow for VR.

I'd prefer they got the basics right first. I bought a XZ at the weekend and both the signal strength and battery life are abysmal.

Really?
I also got the XZ at the weekend. I'm having none of those issues. If anything, the battery life is better than what I was expecting.

When you say it can't do VR as it's LCD, I assume you mean Daydream due to the requirements. It is a real shame I admit, holding off on getting any of them until I have seen it in action. Got a PSVR for good VR anyway. Didn't like the S7 Edge's distorted edges but heard that the S8 is less so. The slo-mo function does look good though., more than a gimmick for me.
