what do you think is the best way to display media from this on a TV? would like to get xbmc or similar running as it looks better than my dnla bluray player interface.

You have no chance of running XBMC on the NAS and why would you want to all this does is stream media, your best option for doing what you want is either a Android TV box but they do have limits or the best choice is to get a Intel NUC micro PC and install windows then XBMC or the microserver i mentioned in the post above that will do all the jobs storage serving and with a GPU plug into your TV and run XBMC. Your other option and probably the easiest and cheapest is the WD Live streaming media player as it has a similar interface to XBMC displaying pictures and info on media has netflix and iplayer built in it also has built in wifi and will play anything its £70 at Amazon at the minute but can usually be had for £59.99.

I have the 310 single version and this one and ive just took the 325 off line and replaced it with a micro server, its really a no brainer with cashback the server comes in at £97 £30 more than this and way better. The 325 is a decent NAS but i found that eventhough it had better specs than the 310 the 310 preforms better. The 310 is quicker at responding to calls from the network. as for the server, ive installed windows 7 on it i did try freenas but found it couldn't do what i needed but windows 7 does, sickbeard, sabnzb and Plex all of which cant be done on either 325 or 310 without creating a so called funplug and i found the instructions to be very confusing. Its a decent NAS which has served me well for a couple of years but its very limited.
