- 2MB L2 Cache
- 64-Bit Technology
- HyperTransport 3.0 Technology
- AMD Virtualization (AMD-V) Technology

Wow. A deal from OcUK that isn't going cold.

It is cheapish compared to other AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 640 processors. However...

Not really a deal when you consider the more upto date competition. You could buy a Phenom 2 x3 Black edition for £82 new (possibly less) which is way faster out of the box and multiplier unlocked so you can push it all the way upto 3.8 on the stock cooler with 5 taps on the keyboard. And before you say it.. I know its only got 3 cores. But unless you are encoding a video file or rending something on 3ds max its not going to effect overall windows, games or application performance at all as so few programs are multithreaded to include more than 1 or 2 cores.
#3
You could buy the Phenom2 x2 black edition that's dual core for around £65 and if you have a modern board unlock the 2 cores making a quad phenom2 black edition for no money at all which will anilate the budget athlon even if you cant unlock it it will still be a fast cpu that will more than likely keep up or even beat this in everyday use. There is also the 3core Phenom2 that can be unlocked for around the same price as this and even if you cant unlock the 4th core it will beat this.

Before someone says they are not guaranteed to unlock, I know but lots of people i know have managed to unlock the 2 cores and continued to overclock to around 4ghz with the right voltage and motherboard if you google it you will find all the info on how its done and what boards and CPU's can be unlocked
#4
@Avonius....his will do 3.8 too if you raise the FSB and change the memory clock ratio. Also I don't know why you say there is more up to date competetion when this is the latest Athlon II X4 Quad Core?

"unless you are encoding a video file or rending something on 3ds max its not going to effect overall windows" by that logic you may as well buy a dual core cos 3 cores won't be any faster unless encoding etc.

The only real criticism of these Athlons is that they don't have the L3 cache that the Phenoms do.

@Polly69...where can you get the Phenom X2 BE for £65? Cheapest I can find is £70.

If you want a guaranteed quad this is hot. The ratio of unlockable dual core Phenoms that unlock is about 70% but some of them are not fully stable.
#5
Why is this hot? its not even cheap people will vote hot on here for no reason, its £76 at scan aswell and a lot of people get free postage making scans cheaper and thats the first site i went on if i continue to look no doubt ebuyer and novatech will be around the same price £76 delivered making this expensive.

This is a fair bit cheaper than an Intel i3 and with better performance. (I've just bought an i3 lol)
#7
can this fit in instead od an atom 1.6ghz netbook?

stonebear

Scan have the phenom2 dual core BE on today only nearly every week for £65 delivered if you have free postage with them and you are talking about 2 different cpu's the athlon is a budget cpu and even overclocked is no match for a phenom2 as they save the money removing cache and other vital bits making it slower. Just because a cpu clocks to 3.8ghz when overclocked doesn't mean that its faster if thats the case my 4ghz i7 would kill intels £1000 extreme i7 and in that case why would anyone bother buying the more expensive cpu. The other thing you must remember is a black edition has a unlocked multiplier so even a novice can score a good overclock without the fuss, by just changing the multiplier and that means to get the same speed its much easier and there's less heat as you are not ramping up the FSB and the warranty stands as your not overvolting it and it was sold to be clocked.

Simple answer is NO the atom is a small INTEL cpu this one is a big AMD cpu.

Asking that question would have to ask myself should I actually be using a computer. A netbook is a netbook for a reason, but unless you bought it from PC World as they probably told you it could be upgraded with better parts and then pointed you towards the Tech Guys counter with the 2 brainless blind armless guys sat staring at a motherboard wondering why they cant get BBC1 to come on.

With go faster stickers at the ready for only £15. xD

Like stated above its this price as per nomal at Scan, even cheaper when considering postage can be free and also Today Only offers.
Plus the Athlon X4 is over priced for what it is compared to the budget Phenom CPUs, as already pointed out.

An ok chip for those who don't have a chipset that supports unlocking (ACC/UCC)

I had an Athlon X4 620 and upgraded to a Phenom II and had them both running at the same speeds 3.6Ghz and I seen no real difference, certainly in encoding the speeds were the same but for fps gaming I noticed a fractional increase and even with benchmarking like Everest and Cinebench the scores remained similiar.

Overall for those who wants quad core specs its a great chip for those that want the L3 cache pay your money and take your chance with a 550/555 providing you got the board to do it with.

So you are saying last years top of the line Athlon beats a cheap Intel CPU? Surprise surprise. I don't think anybody considers the i3 series particularly competitive - its purpose is to provide a kind of budget option in an all Intel shop.

But this CPU is now mid range - and a quad core without turbo clock (or whatever it is called) does not make a lot of sense there. It is great for some budget number crunching, but on the desktop it will disappoint.

Can you add that it costs £7.25 to deliver - its free if you collect from them however i dont see this as an option for many. £83 total. Not a great deal.
#16
I'll hang on til the Intel i7's come down (a lot) in price.
No rush.
Mine's a Pentium dual core 2.8 and TBH is enough for what I want it for.
Besides. Does o/c actually make the thing go any faster ?

Well actually the results might be closer than you think, look here:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html

The i3 is much more powerful than it gets credit for. I'm still not sure I have made the right choice but the reason I went for it is that it sips power and runs very cool (its 32nm). Also having an Intel motherboard means I can easily upgrade to i7 in the future. (Well that's what I initially thought but Intel keep changing the bloody socket!)

Oooh information overload. I am looking for a quad core. Someone suggested novatech for motherboard/barebones bundles. Any other sites you could recommend for me please?
#19
ive just bought one to replace an AM2+ Processor...

Cant knock it for the money...

please un-expire as still available
#20
in my opinion this is a good CPU ( not good price here tho). its quad core and can pretty easily reach 3.5ghz + and you dont have the worry of whether or not it will unlock and its £30+ cheaper than phenom II x4's. right now the phenom II x3 may be as fast but in a few years more programs will utilise 4+ cores making this CPU faster. its great if you just cant stretch the budget to the phenom II x4 and if u dont want the worry of unlocking a chip!get it from somewhere else tho lol
