Heat added. I need a basic am3+ to run simple stuff like BL2. Any suggestions? I'm in the middle of a build.

OK cool the FX 6300 should not be overlooked as you could spend the extra to get a really good cooler. Or even the FX 4300 seen them go for as little as £60.

Awesome deal, just tried flubit :D cheeky but worth trying.

With BL2 being a CPU dependent game better off with Intel

GPU used was the GTX 680 if you're interested.

What kind of performance improvement would this yield over my FX6100? It's bottlenecking my R9-280X; would this processor open up the bottleneck? Power draw is another concern - I'm on a good Corsair 500W 80+ and that is fine for my current setup, but would this chip increase my load to worrying levels? And what extra cooling is recommended? My tower isn't huge and literally only just had space for my surprisingly large graphics card. I don't want to replace the tower.

I was looking at getting an i5 4690K instead, mainly because of the reduced energy requirements.

Cheers.

it is common knowledge that Intel CPUs are better than AMD CPUs but the main reason people go the AMD route is the price to performance ratio.

For example I built an FX 6300 and a gigabyte motherboard plus a decent air cooler for £165 for my brother. That is about the same price as one Intel CPU. Then overclocked it to 4.5GHz.

Personally I use Intel but can't deny the fact the AMD is good value for money. IMHO.

I think for a good build going with an Intel CPU and an AMD GPU is best performance for money. Even then I'm waiting till DDR4 comes out before I do a new build.

With the new G3258 from Intel it easily wins price to performance, and offers an upgrade path too on a modern socket unlike AM3+.

I have this over clocked to 4.4. I have water cooling and if you do too this CPU is a no brainer bang per buck

I've just built my media center PC using a g3258 and 750ti, money saved I blew on a noctua L12 cooler. Even at stock it feels just as quick as the AMD phenom ii x4 975 it replaced which sounded like a turbine due to zilch airflow. This stays pretty much silent. I may overclock and / or undervolt it a bit, but for £43 its a bargain, and if you can push to over 4.5ghz, in most games that aren't multithreaded (and even some that are) it can keep up with this CPU. If you're building a gaming machine to keep you going for 18/24 months or so, then I'd still probably choose the FX series, but if you want something to chuck in a media center (where are you a8 7600 :( ) or a cheap gaming rig with something like a 750ti, the g3258 is perfect. It's a right kick in the gonads for AMD if you just want something cheap and quick.

Ah, no point upgrading from my FX 6300 then :(

Currently using an ageing Phenom II 1100T - toying with the idea of jumping upto this as my board will take it after a BIOS flash. (Crosshair IV Formula). Just wondering if the performance gain will be worth it.

Shouldn't be a problem at all! Got a similar build as yours and mine uses about 300-350w max as measured from the plug!

I'd still go for the G3258. You could at least upgrade to an i5 or an i7 down the line.
#25
Really you need at least a quad for newer titles these days. The difference in performance between a fast dual core and a quad on stuff like Battlefield 4 or Metro or Watch Dogs is far too big now. G3258 is only good in cherry picked games or if you play with console style locked 30FPS framerates.

Personally I can't get away from Intel, they are always more expensive, but they are virtually always faster as well and I never feel like I can skimp on something important like a CPU.

Which is why I still have one particular system with an i7 920 in it, and that is why that (at the time expensive) said system still plays games and easily keeps up with hardware like this 5 and a half years later....money very well spent for the longevity.

Sad fact of the matter is - not really: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/203?vs=698

This is a solid chip for BF4 and the like but many games prefer the faster per-thread performance of the Intels. If you are having doubts just pony up the extra £50 and get yourself an i5.

Great just sold me fm2+ setup, going on am3+.

Why not intel?

Why intel? AMD is cheaper and works it all as good as intel in everyday life. I would have kept the fm2+ as the apu worked well for me but wanna play gta v when it comes out.
#30
This has gone up to £ 103.19. I think the 8350 at £ 119.99 is a better deal.

No way when it comes to gaming and single threaded applications Intel is miles ahead right now.

Im sorry, i dont want to argue about benchmarks set in "ideal" conditions.

Take two everyday pc-s, one amd one intel , both running "used" windows and loads of programs in backround and so on, and if you want to tell me now that intel is faster "in real life" going to google, watching a movie, or doing everything everyday stuff that at once or playing a game then please show me how much is intel better/faster than amd?

Intel are more powerful but more expensive. You just buy what you want.

There are hundreds of benchmarks which clearly show Intel are better for gaming you will get a better frame rate with a i5 loads of videos on YouTube. AMD are good for the money but there is a reason why Intel costs more. I have owned a FX 4300 a FX 8320 and now a second hand i7 3770 and its been the big improvement by going with Intel.
