Great price for this CPU prices must be dropping due to the release of the Phenom II 955, at this price this cpu offers amazing value as it wins in some benchmarks against an core i7 920 and is faster for gaming. If you have an exsisting AM2/AM2+ motherboard and want an upgrade to quad core without buying a new motherboard/ram this cpu is for you.

At this price you could buy this cpu with an AM2+ Motherboard and DDR2 ram for the same price as just the core i7 cpu, factor in how much a Core i7 x58 motheboard and ddr3 ram costs and your looking at saving hundreds by going with amd for very little performance difference with most benchmarks the phenom II 940 comes out on top for gaming. Looks like amd is back in the game now.

seems good value, i wish i would of got one of these instead of my core 2 quad. great cpus

Are your comparisons for standard or overclocked benchmarks?
I won't disagree about the savings although more motherboards are coming out for i7 and DDR3 can be had for a reasonable price now. Its still a touch on the high side.

Core 2 quads are great, with the top models beating the phenom II 940 in some tests and vise versa, your better off waiting until the next intel socket is out rather than go i7 or AM3 as 2 core quads offer great performance. with intel releasing a new socket soon (core i5) makes you think who would pay a premium for an core i7 setup that may only be around for a short while. At least with AMD you always get a good length of support for the socket im guessing AM3 will be around for a long time and maybe AM3+ in the future.

Either standard or overclocked the Phenom II 940 is very good for gaming, just check the reviews on google heres one http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-phenom-ii-x4-920-and-940-review-test/1

with core i5 coming out I can't see any reason to go to corei7 its costs loads and offers very little advantage over Phenom II. also core i7 uses loads more power at idle whilst Phenom II is amd's most power effiecent chip. Seens as most PC's are at idle 80% of the time this is also a factor to consider unless you don't pay the electricity bill lol

I'm with you. I guess it depends on what you want your system for but the Phenom is a very good choice but it you have lots of cash to spend on a processor, don't pay the electricity bill and want the most performance then the i7 is the best overall choice. I think the Phenom is excellent value for money and a step in the right direction from AMD.

Something else worth looking at:

AMD FTW!

Note, I believe you can put AM3 chips into AM2+ socket motherboards, to ease upgrading. So it may work out even cheaper than i7 as you dont have to get a new motherboard! Can also use either DDR2 or DDR3, so might not even have to get new RAM!

Plus it helps to support the rebel alliance against the evil empire.

I'm saving up for a 720 Black Edition, 3.5ghz OC here I come!
#9
It says it's an AM2+ is there also an AM3 version?
#10
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz AM3 version will be released on the 23rd!

If this was £50 it wouldn't be a bargain.

OCUK is without doubt the worst company I have ever, ever, ever dealt with.

If the product works you may be in luck.

But God, in all his/her variations, help you if you ever have to contact their customer 'services' or need a refund.

I've only used OCUK once or twice and can remember having major problems the last time I used them. It was that long ago that I can't recall the exact details, I can just remember vowing to never use them again for valid reasons.
#13
good value but overclockers are the worst etailer ever...quick enough to take your money but if you have any problems....GOOD LUCK!

Wouldnt buy anything from them TBH
#14
Yeah, overclockers were so cheeky to me for no reason on 2 occasions, the first time they took 30 days to send me a replacement part! so the second thing i had go wrong they told me just to contact the supplier themselves!

they wouldn't just send me a replacement even though i argued they should!, never ordered anything from them again.

Bunch of ******s.

How true,customer service is terrible.
I bought some ram from them that was duff, they would not refund money.

Yeah, there’s no point in buying i7 unless you’re in the minority that can benefit from its extra performance. If you are though it’s worth it and the dual processor workstation/server version is exceptional; not much use to typical home users of course
#18
Yeah I wouldn't buy from Overclockers as well no way. Mess you about too much when things go wrong.
#19
Much better value than an i7, especially if you have a am2+ setup already, just a quick swap. You've got to be talking about £500 for an i7 cpu with compatible mobo and ddr3 ram. Wouldn't need to go over £300 with the 940. I always make this argument, do you really need that much performance? How many people are going to take full advantage of it, surely a cheaper option will suffice?

I'm really happy to chose i7 and been in the minority with over the double of performace of the q6600. :whistling: if you do Video Edition like me you will be very happy to have a i7 920 in the market :-D when time is money a 25min rende whorth a lot than wait 49min.
#21
I suppose if you're not into overclocking and have the hardware to support it then this is the CPU to go for but *personally* I rather go for a Intel Q6600 G0 than to switch over to AMD.

I do agree that i7 is still cost to much to switch over.
#22
Good price for this CPU but only on a par with a Q6600, however not voting cold as I can't find this specific CPU cheaper.

ocuk are not so bad, like anything if you have issues and call up then you need to be firm and quote your rights. i'm thinking of going for this if it works on my shuttle. (am2+) but not mentioned as supported on there web site.
#24
Step in the right direction for AMD yes, they have finally managed to catch up with (and in some instances overtake) intels previous generation of quad core CPU - also seem to overclock very nicely.

Seems to be at the moment if you are gaming then go for AMD and if you are doing lots of video encoding go for the Intel Quad Cores - Q6600 still being a peach of a CPU and overclocks nicely.

Intel i7 of course beats all these and they are starting to come down in price but the killer is the £150 motherboard you have to pair with it not the ram - 6gb of Corsaid DDR3 Ram can be picked up for £62 I believe.

Intel i5 I think will basically just be a cut down version of i7 which will run on motherboards not costing an arm and a leg ...
#25
Good luck dealing with this company!
banned#26
Is this effectively 3ghz per core?
#27
Yes 4 cores each running @3ghz stock speed ... these quad cores are brilliant if like me you like to do 3 or 4 things at the same time as they handle that with ease and then some.
#28
Would this fit in an Asus M2N SLI-Deluxe board?
#29
I never really had a problem with OCUK, had a problem with a product once but they switched it over pretty swiftly.
#30
Voted HOT!

Bought 1 or 2 things from overclockers over the years BUT never had to return anything so cant comment on that part of their service

If you have any problems just threaten to bring down their website... :D

As far as I can see, it is the same product for a better price. £2 cheaper (ebuyer gives free next day delivery too!).

OC gives really REALLY poor customer support. Really. However, Ebuyer provides great support - no problem getting a refund or replacement if problems arise.

So on the merit of the customer support from the retailer and the cheaper price at Ebuyer, I have voted cold.

Just thought I would add my piece too, the only time I have had credit card fraud performed against me was involving this company...... I'm obviously avoiding like the plague.

+ it isnt the black edition for the overclockers :)
#36
price is hot, company is not
#37
This is a very good price. To be objective, I have ordered quite a bit from OCUK over the years, only 1 item I had to return which was a bit lengthy but no real roblems. That said, I have heard some above average horror stories about this place.
#38
Damn, I swear it said £176 this morning when I checked it. I even checked it a few times to make sure I wasn't seeing things... Either I misread or the price went up. :-/

Various people who left reviews on Ebuyer said that it is the black version they received.

//EDIT: CCLOnline has it for the sameish price. DEFINITELY. Doesn't seem to be the black edition but if you want to avoid OC then maybe its an alternative... http://www.**************/product-info.asp?product_id=30395&tid=gsearch

Ebuyer is charging lots more than this, I never had problems with overclockers I guess the difference is how you handle customer support if you have problems, if I had a faulty item and wanted a replacment etc I wouldn't take no for an answer they would give me replacment/refund etc its against the law for them to not to and trading standards provides info on your consumer rights etc.

Voting this deal cold becausce of a personal opinion seems weird to me why not just not vote? Way to many cold voters on here with no valid reason.

Im sorry but if you got ripped off sounds like you shouldn't shop online or at least learn to be more aggresive if needing a refund etc.

Does the retail version contain a heatsink?
