Here's what the tesco deal says:

Gift Pack includes: 1x Gift Voucher for a Standard Individual Merlin Annual Pass in a special presentation wallet 1x Lanyard to display your Pass 1x Gift Voucher to collect a re-fillable drinks capsule at any of the theme parks which gives unlimited soft drinks all year 1 x Merlin Annual Pass car sticker

We are a family of 4 and have a load of tesco vouchers. I was thinking of buying the £50 deal on the tesco clubcard site as you get an annual parking pass and free ulimited drink, then buy 3 x pass at family rate for £222. This seems to be better than spending another £46-£50 on tesco vouchers and then 2 passes for £200...

Can anyone tell me if there is likely to be any better deals coming up or whether this makes sense. My youngest son is 5 and unlikely to be able to go on a lot of the rides. Does he still have to have a full on pass? Finally will we be able to use these passes on their own (Have a teenage son who is likely to go to things with his mates)

Thanks

unfortuntaly you cannot get a reduced childs pass and it depends on where you are most likely to go as to whether your 5 year old will benefit. We got a family pass for the 1st time last year as we live near alton towers and warwick castle. Both of these are free to under 4's (some places like legoland charge from 2 years I think?) but I have a 6 year old and a just 4 year old who I needed to get passes for. We have had a brilliant time, in the summer we went on a saturday/sunday once a month to Alton towers (me and three boys age 3-6) as my other half works weekends. There was lots for a little one to do - some more babyish things like the farm/story book area but they can do older rides (if you dont mind going on with them) like charlie and the chocolate factory, hex, driving school, runaway mone train etc. We never felt that we had to do the same rides over and over again and if it was too busy because we knew we could come back soon we didnt feel ripped off. Dependant on height you will be surprised how much a 5 year old can do at Alton towers. Our best day was going for the holloween scarefest - lots of shows for little ones and its on for about 3 weeks so we went before halloween to avoid it being too busy. As its open longer at halloween we were able to go on the runaway mine train in the dark which they thought was brilliant!

We bought our passes in april last year and they were about £15 per person more than this offer. Yes you can use the passes on your own or as a group. When friends have been visiting alton towers they have taken my older son without me as he has his own pass - each pass is individual with a photo id.

I also upgraded just one pass (its cost me £35) but then I got free parking which applies to both warwick castle and alton towers - sorry not sure which other attractions it covers.

We also get 20% off in the merlin shops and this does apply to some of the photo offers. You can also get into Alton towers at 9am instead of 10am which is useful in peak season and for warwick castle I have been able to take friends and family for just over £10 each - there is a discounted book in advance price for all the merlin attractions included in the passes. I was also able to buy a reuseable merlin drinks bottle - cost £16 but its refilable all season (jan - jan) for free so it worked out for us - they refilled it at alton towers and warwick castle but again I dont know it applies to all attractions. Just had to grab passes, drinks bottle and a couple of sarnies and we were set for the day.

We have had a brilliant time with the passes but this is due to our location near to 2 attractions. We are hoping to do legoland around easter time.

I have just used this deal to renew my passes (will activate them in april). Was unsure whether to have them for another year but think this may be the last year before the age difference between my eldest and youngest causes issues where they want to be in totally separate parts of the park.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. Looking at the deals I think it seems we will be best off buying 3 passes as a family pass and then getting one pass from tesco vouchers. The deal at the moment is £50 worth of vouchers = 1 x standard pass plus free parking and 1 free ultd drink. I dont think there is much point in shelling out for 2 tickets from our vouchers becuase they are only £74pp when buying as a family.

The only thing I am finding is that I am unable to get the £74pp online. It always comes up at about £106........ Any ideas?

There's no mention of free parking with the tesco offer, only a car sticker! I'm sure you can pay to upgrade 1 pass to premium though to get the free parking

This pass is great, we crammed in as many of the London attractions as we possibly could in one weekend and it would have cost more than the pass!! Thorpe park at the weekend
I don't have a pass to renew so this deal for new passes is good for me, cheers.
Hi again - yes I saw the 35% deal for those renewing the Merlin card. This 25% off is for new customers - the standard non-discounted card saves a decent amount for those who visit attractions more than 4 times a year - this extra saving means family days out can get even cheaper - watch out for a few restrictions (dates & venues)....but I think some genuine money can be saved....good luck
£46.50 in clubcard vouchers will do the same trick.

Yeah, my friend tried this - gave her husbands pass to her sister. Happened to get the gate where they checked the passes. They confiscated her pass and made her pay

Not through the original site list here but if you opt to collect your ticket from legoland then you are directed to the legoland site to process your order. legoland have topcashback of 8%
Beware - the legoland website is only giving 25% this morning instead of 35%, chessington website was doing it correctly.

Deciding between them....how much extra is it if I wanted to go to Fright Night with my Merlin Pass....is it £5

Yeah it's an extra £5 for fright nights and the fireworks at Thorpe. I go premium, mainly because the parking is £3 a time there, and it's £5 at alton towers... The amount of time I used it for just that saves me a ton!

I get family of 3 pass, but thinking about upgrading one of them to premium so we can get the free parking this year. It's a joke that they make you pay, after what they charge for tickets! (_;)

I was planning on doing this as opposed to upgrading all of the family passes to premium. Has anyone phoned them up to ask if this is possible under the price for family and not based on the individual prices.

Also do you know if you have to use the passes stright away or is the first dCan I upgrade a Standard Merlin Annual Pass into a Premium Merlin Annual Pass?
I was planning on using it in May for the first time so would it run from then for a year?

From the FAQs page on their website:

Can I upgrade a Standard Merlin Annual Pass into a Premium Merlin Annual Pass?
A. Yes, you may upgrade the remaining time left on your Standard Merlin Annual Pass into a Premium Merlin Annual Pass for a flat fee of £35pp at any time during your 12 month membership. You will need to visit the attraction where you originally purchased your Standard Merlin Annual Pass to carry out the upgrade.

Just to note that they need to take pictures of all the card holders when buying the card.

Have emailed them to ask if they will honour the original end date, will see what happens!!

I'm confused, how is this a good deal at £99 when they are £84 on the Thorpe Park website, or £50 in clubcard vouchers?

Went to Thorpe Park yesterday, first time in many years, it was so busy. We queued for 8 hours and got on a total of 5 rides all day. That includes paying an extra £4.50 to fast track one of the rides. I wouldn't recommend bothering going unless you like queuing or you go on a rainy day when no ones there, or buy a full fast track ticket (£66 online!). We used a buy 1 get one free, I assume these aren't valid on the fast track tickets though.

Edited By: userdefinable on Jul 12, 2011 11:10
£85.44pp for a family of 3, 4 or 5 on the Merlin site for the same. Personally, I agree with Snookums. They have increased prices, and reduced usage. Vote with your feet (or keyboard) and don't buy them. If everyone did the same, maybe they'd reduce the price and go back to free parking. Voting cold.
They will still swipe you out until your current annual pass runs out after that it is 2 quid a car, unless you have one of their premium passes
We have standard Merlin passes which we bought with Tesco Clubcard vouchers. We bougt ours after the official cut-off date, and in fact they say 'parking not included' on them however they've swiped us out of the carpark without paying at Alton Towers (many times, we live 20 mins away so quite often pop there for a couple of hours in an afternoon), Warwick Castle and last week at Legoland too. If yours is marked 'no parking' it might be worth trying too. We always have the cash to pay if we need to, but like I said so far it's been OK!
does anyone know if nectar points can be used on this? double value at the mo.

Coincidentally I am thinking of getting 4 individual passes thru Tesco clubcard points.... (or I was until I saw this thread!!). That would mean £200 in Clubcard vouchers (for myself and my three kids). We live in West Yorks, so the nearest attractions are Lightwater Valley and Flamingo Land. In fact - must check that these are included in the Pass Attractions....

You can all tell I am a novice at this :)

I do know that if we did have cards we would try to use them to death to get our money's worth, but if Merlin are indeed "taking the mickey", then I might save the vouchers to get what can be up to 4x their value in some outlets.

ADVICE PLEASE!!!!!

(Mum going through extraordinarily long Easter School holidays that will span 4 weeks between 2 schools and running out of things to do with kids....!)

It is... but give us passholders a chance to moan and we'll grab it :)

your not wrong lol
It is... but give us passholders a chance to moan and we'll grab it :)

Merlin alienated their 'loyal customers' with their t&c changes and crappy business decisions and I think they're gonna have a bit of a hit this year with the amount of people that won't bother to renew. Their loss though!
Isn't this deal supposed to be about the discounts which the card offers being available to all and sundry, rather than the cards themselves?
I don't blame you, I've been a merlin pass holder for the last four years but enough is enough. Ironically Merlin entertainment posted record profits in 2010 so it's not like they had to put prices up. It's purely a greed based decision. I will not be using them again, but then again, the uk parks do get a little tiresome after a while.

I was also advised that the cards will need to be picked up by the 31/03/11. Not sure if thats true or not but thats what the guy on the phone told me.

Next time that happens go to cust services at the park on your way out and complain about it.

Recently we travelled up from London and Thirteen wasn't working. When they eventually got it working late in the afternoon there was a 90 min queue so I complained that Thirteen was the main reason we'd come up, and the assistant gave me a priority pass for 6 rides (including thirteen) for 6 people for next time we come!!

And note I said 'priority pass', not 'fast-track', so you can jump the WHOLE queue and hop onto the ride through the exit - front seats all the way next time we go!! :-D

Thanks...hope this helps someone

BEWARE....ALTON TOWERS RIDES BROKE DOWN FREQUENTLY

We love theme parks and have visited them for many years....recently came back from a trip to Alton Towers and it was nothing short of a sham!! Every single ride with the exception of the runaway mine train broke down several times. Ok so we expected Thirteen to have some techical hitches being new....but it was a total joke!!! Whilst waiting in line Air, 13, Oblivion, Nemesis all broke down many times, Rita was barely running all day and even the rapids broke down on a boiling hot saturday.....it was a disgrace!! On returning I have spoken to others who had the same experience. Not sure if it is due to cutbacks in the maintenance budget or what but such a waste of a day...as it is the park is only open from 10-6pm (varies) not helped by spending unecessary hours in a queue for a ride that doesnt work.
Such a shame...it was such a sham!! :x

Yes I agree, if u have enough tesco clubcard points, then get if thru them. Otherwise its quite a good deal especially if you live in the south like I do! Im close to thorpe park, legoland and chessington so really good for us. Also London is really close so well worth it! Shame about not being able to use in london during August, but we will just visit the theme parks then instead :-)

Never seen them with 50% off that wud be fanatastic if they did that as were a family of 5!
Frustrating they are now adding the 'premium'. also non card holders are going to have to pay an EXTRA £2 for parking!!! Really cant understand their reasoning for not being able to use london attractions in august, I know its going to be more busy, but seriously, annual pass, should be annual pass. ALSO there have been 50% offers (other than the tesco clubcard option) so if your not in a rush, hold on, if you want one now, then great deal :)

You may appreciate following info, please be aware of the restrictions

exclusions: No entry during the month of August at London Eye, Madame Tussauds London, London Dungeon and SEA LIFE London Aquarium. No entry during Fright Nights at THORPE PARK (£5 entry fee applies). No entry on 14th February at the London Eye. No entry on 31st October at the London Eye and The London Dungeon.

Because I thought these restrictions were OTT I complained to Merlin and now  they have two cards
A standard Merlin pass and A Premium Merlin pass which has no restrictions but they have set the price at £200 :whistling: for the premium.

Just to let you know that the deal seems to still be active on the London Sealife website - just managed to book two merlin passes to pick up in jan although it does say the deal expires 15th jan on the homepage. Just received confirmation email too...fingers crossed all is OK!

Just come online to book our tickets "expires 15th January" - well not to the end of the 15th January - they've ended the deal! Arghhhhh

Railcard ordered, train booked, hotel booked, oyster card ordered and now Merlin can't stick to their side of the bargain!

You can even buy Merlin Annual Pass £75 on Aquarium website. I bought it 10 minuts ago.

Just a last reminder as this offer ends today. Legoland has already removed the £75 tickets from their site but the link to the Sealife centre (see above) still works.

Yes your'e right - I called straight after the ad was aired at 7pm and was told that my call would be answered shortly. This morning I got through after one ring and was told that they are open 9 to 5. I suggested it would be a good idea if their message outside that time told people that.
I just dialled the number now and got through in 6 rings. I think your problem may have been that you phoned "last night" after they had all gone home.

yeah, loving the small print on this one ...

* £76.80 price is per person when a family of 5 Merlin Annual Pass is purchased online only.

... and if you only want one it is actually £120 per person purchased online only

edited in thanks:thumbsup:
thoght that was a bargain..... hopes dashed again !:x
Great bargain, but just renewed mine this week and it's not 20% off renewals. That would have been too good to be true as renewal for a family of four is still £320 for the year.
